[00:00:01] Welcome to NSDR, the Non-Sleep Deep Rest Podcast. In this episode, I'll guide you through a unique practice of combining progressive muscle relaxation and a journey through the senses to help you achieve deep relaxation while staying fully awake. Find a serene and comfortable place where you can relax without interruptions. This might be a soft mat, a cozy chair, or your bed.
[00:00:28] Ensure your body is well supported, whether lying down or reclining. You might place a cushion under your knees for lower back support and a small pillow under your head for neck alignment. Ensure you are warm and ready to disconnect from external distractions. The aim here is to achieve deep relaxation without falling asleep.
[00:00:50] Close your eyes gently and begin by taking a slow, deep breath in through your nose, then exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat this process a few times, each breath guiding you deeper into relaxation.
[00:01:15] Feel the breath entering your body, bringing calmness and clarity, and as you exhale, release any tension or stress, letting it flow out of your body. We will start with progressive muscle relaxation, tensing and then relaxing different muscle groups to release built-up tension.
[00:01:43] Begin with your feet. Curl your toes tightly. Hold for a moment, and then release, letting your feet relax completely. Move up to your calves. Tighten the muscles in your calves. Hold for a moment, and then release, feeling the relaxation spread.
[00:02:06] Next, focus on your thighs. Tense these muscles. Hold for a moment, and then release, letting your thighs become heavy and relaxed. Now bring your attention to your hips and pelvis. Tighten the muscles, holding for a moment, and then release, allowing them to soften.
[00:02:39] Move to your lower back and abdomen. Tighten your core muscles. Hold for a moment, and then release, feeling the tension melt away. Continue now to your chest and upper back. Tighten these muscles. Hold for a moment, and then release, letting your upper body relax completely.
[00:03:09] Next, focus on your hands. Make a fist with each hand. Hold for a moment, and then release, feeling those fingers relax. Move up to your arms. Tighten your forearms and upper arms. Holding for a moment, and then releasing, letting the relaxation spread through your arms.
[00:03:39] Finally, bring your attention to your face. Scrunch up your facial muscles. Hold for a moment, and then release, allowing your face to soften and relax. Now, let's embark on a journey through your senses to deepen your relaxation. Imagine yourself in a beautiful, serene location. This could be a lush forest, a calm beach, or a tranquil meadow.
[00:04:09] Visualize the details around you. The colors, the shapes, the light. Bring your attention to the sounds in this peaceful place. It could be the rustling of leaves, the gentle lapping of waves, or the singing of birds. Allow these sounds to soothe and calm you.
[00:04:29] Notice the scents in the air. Perhaps it's the fresh smell of pine trees, the salty scent of the ocean, or the fragrant aroma of flowers. Breathe in these soothing scents deeply. Next, focus on the sensations on your skin. Feel the warmth of the sun, the coolness of a gentle breeze, or the softness of grass beneath you.
[00:04:58] Let these sensations bring a deeper sense of relaxation. Imagine a taste that brings you comfort and joy. It could be the sweetness of a ripe fruit, the freshness of cool water, or the warmth of a comforting beverage. Savor this imagined taste. With your body fully relaxed and your senses engaged, focus now on your breath.
[00:05:26] Imagine each inhale bringing in peace, and each exhale releasing any residual tension. Visualize yourself lying on a soft, fluffy cloud. The cloud is gentle and supportive, lifting you slightly off the ground. Feel the sensation of weightlessness as you float, each movement bringing deeper relaxation.
[00:05:52] As you float, notice the vast, clear sky around you. It is peaceful and serene, with a few soft clouds drifting by. Allow this serene environment to deepen your sense of peace and tranquility. Gradually, bring your awareness back to the present moment. Notice the sensations in your body,
[00:06:21] the sounds around you, and the surface supporting you. Gently wiggle your fingers and toes. When you're ready, roll onto your right side in a fetal position, taking a moment to rest there.
[00:06:50] Slowly, come up to a seated position. Open your eyes when you feel ready. And take a moment to reflect on this journey, and the relaxation you've achieved. Thank you for joining this journey into non-sleep deep rest.
[00:07:20] You can revisit the NSDR podcast anytime you need a pause or reset. And I look forward to guiding you again, helping you to find tranquility, relaxation, and rejuvenation whenever you need it.
