[00:01:09] This is Optimal Finance Daily, episode 2707, The Best Time of Year to Buy Many Items
[00:01:15] by Andrea Joy of savingjoyfully.com.
[00:01:17] And I'm your host and personal finance enthusiast, Diana Mariam.
[00:01:22] Welcome back to Optimal Finance Daily, where every day I read and offer commentary on some
[00:01:27] of the best personal finance blogs on the web in about 10 minutes or less.
[00:01:31] So with that, let's get right to it as we optimize your life.
[00:01:39] The Best Time of Year to Buy Many Items by Andrea Joy of savingjoyfully.com.
[00:01:46] January.
[00:01:47] Cruise Vacations.
[00:01:49] Cruises are typically at their lowest prices for spring and summer cruises because
[00:01:53] cruise lines know that this is when people tend to book these.
[00:01:57] Fitness Equipment.
[00:01:59] Buying fitness equipment is a great idea at the beginning of the year because many stores
[00:02:03] are running sales.
[00:02:04] These sales are always run this time of year due to many people making New Year's
[00:02:08] fitness resolutions.
[00:02:09] Now is a great time to shop the sales if you're in the market for some home fitness
[00:02:13] equipment.
[00:02:15] Furniture.
[00:02:17] Furniture sales can be a great deal in January, although it's not always
[00:02:20] the best time to bring home new furniture if you live in a snowy climate like many of
[00:02:24] us do.
[00:02:25] And Bedding.
[00:02:27] Bedding sales are the best in January during what is typically referred to as White
[00:02:31] Sale.
[00:02:33] February.
[00:02:35] Chocolate.
[00:02:36] Chocolate is a great price this time of year especially after Valentine's Day is over
[00:02:40] with all the sales to sell the leftover Valentine's goodies.
[00:02:44] And Cameras and Camera Equipment.
[00:02:47] Sales are at their lowest prices typically this time of year due to the new models being
[00:02:51] introduced.
[00:02:52] New models tend to be introduced in February resulting in cheaper prices on old models during
[00:02:57] this time.
[00:02:59] March.
[00:03:00] Luggage.
[00:03:02] New lines of luggage are introduced in March causing the prices to be at their lowest.
[00:03:07] April.
[00:03:08] Cookware.
[00:03:10] Cookware sales are the best in April with weddings and graduation happening shortly.
[00:03:14] This is definitely a hot item that many buy for both back to school furnishing, a college
[00:03:19] dorm or apartment and for newlyweds.
[00:03:22] May.
[00:03:24] Mattresses.
[00:03:26] Mattress sales are definitely best around Memorial Day due to the great sales that
[00:03:29] are introduced for this holiday each year.
[00:03:32] Last year's models are at a deep discounted price because the new models will be introduced
[00:03:36] soon.
[00:03:37] You'll also see sales around Labor Day again and these can be pretty good deals
[00:03:41] as well.
[00:03:42] June.
[00:03:44] Gym memberships.
[00:03:46] Gym memberships are the lowest around June due to the amount of people heading outdoors
[00:03:49] instead of to the gym.
[00:03:52] Working out inside a gym is not as popular when the weather's nice outside and this
[00:03:55] is when gyms typically offer their best incentives for new members.
[00:04:00] July.
[00:04:01] Jewelry.
[00:04:03] Jewelry sales are at their lowest during the month of July because most gift-giving
[00:04:06] holidays are not in close proximity to this month.
[00:04:10] You can usually find great deals on most jewelry around this time and if you know
[00:04:14] you'll be buying some for an upcoming occasion, this is a great time to shop
[00:04:18] and buy.
[00:04:19] And furniture.
[00:04:21] Furniture sales are great during the summer and especially in July because August
[00:04:25] is when new furniture styles are introduced.
[00:04:28] The weather is definitely better too which makes it a great time to move that old
[00:04:31] furniture out and the new furniture in.
[00:04:35] August.
[00:04:36] Luggage.
[00:04:38] Once again luggage prices tend to drop due to travel season coming to a close for most
[00:04:42] people due to school being back in session for many.
[00:04:46] Summer accessories and clothes.
[00:04:48] Bathing suits, flip-flops, sandals, etc.
[00:04:51] These items are all at their lowest prices because the season is coming to a close and
[00:04:55] the need for these items is decreasing.
[00:04:58] Stores are also trying to make room for their new fall items and want to sell
[00:05:01] these items quickly.
[00:05:04] And computer sales.
[00:05:06] Shores and accessories are typically on sale around this time of year because of back to
[00:05:09] school sales.
[00:05:11] There are often good sales on these after back to school in September and for Black Friday
[00:05:15] as well so keep an eye out in November if you don't find what you're looking for
[00:05:19] now.
[00:05:21] September.
[00:05:23] Computer sales.
[00:05:25] Computer and accessories are at their lowest this time of year because back to school
[00:05:28] is now over and stores are still trying to sell off inventory.
[00:05:31] There are often good sales on these for Black Friday as well so keep an eye out
[00:05:35] in November if you don't find what you're looking for now.
[00:05:39] And vehicles.
[00:05:41] Cars, trucks and SUVs are often a good deal purchased in September because dealerships
[00:05:45] are getting their newer models in and trying to sell off some inventory to make room.
[00:05:50] October.
[00:05:52] Bicycles.
[00:05:53] Looking to buy a new bicycle for yourself or as a Christmas gift this year?
[00:05:57] Many new models are introduced during this month making it a great time to get
[00:06:01] a good deal on a bicycle.
[00:06:03] November.
[00:06:05] Halloween candy.
[00:06:06] Halloween candy is a great deal after Halloween is over and some of this candy can easily be
[00:06:11] repurposed into Christmas candy used to decorate gingerbread houses or even baked into cookies
[00:06:16] for the upcoming holidays.
[00:06:18] Appliances.
[00:06:20] Appliances are usually at their lowest right around Black Friday due to the sales being
[00:06:24] offered to compete with other Black Friday sales.
[00:06:27] You can also find good appliance sales around holiday weekends like Memorial Day
[00:06:31] and Labor Day.
[00:06:33] And electronics.
[00:06:35] Electronics are at their best prices typically around Black Friday sales.
[00:06:39] Stores are fighting the competition to have the lowest sale prices and this makes it a
[00:06:43] great time to do your research and purchase your electronics you've been needing.
[00:06:47] And December.
[00:06:49] Wedding dresses and wedding specific items.
[00:06:53] Wedding dresses and many other items are usually the easiest to come by and the most
[00:06:56] discounted this time of year.
[00:06:58] Hardly anyone is in the market for wedding related items and this can make it a
[00:07:01] great time to get deep discounts on these items.
[00:07:05] And vehicles.
[00:07:07] Vehicle sales are much lower this month because people are not typically in the market for
[00:07:11] a new or used vehicle around the holidays.
[00:07:13] You can score some good deals because dealerships want to make a sale around the holidays
[00:07:18] and before the first of the year.
[00:07:23] You just listened to the post titled The Best Time of Year to Buy Many Items by
[00:07:28] Andrea Joy of savingjoyfully.com and I'll be right back with my commentary.

[00:09:20] your extended 30 day free trial.
[00:09:23] Being willing to wait until certain times of year to buy things can be
[00:09:27] helpful for those purchases that aren't really true must-haves.
[00:09:31] They're the things we'd really, really prefer to have or are used to having.
[00:09:36] I think it's well worth the time to pause and
[00:09:39] question if you need the thing you're considering buying and
[00:09:42] really sit with that question.
[00:09:44] We're so used to moving so quickly and
[00:09:46] many times we could benefit from slowing down and questioning our assumptions.
[00:09:51] So for example, when I moved to Cincinnati from New York City,
[00:09:54] I was told many times that I would need to buy a car.
[00:09:57] But I wanted to question this assumption.
[00:10:00] I chose a walkable neighborhood to live in and spent my first year here carless.
[00:10:04] It really wasn't as bad as others had led me to believe.
[00:10:07] And when I did eventually buy a car for convenience,
[00:10:10] did I really need to buy a new car?
[00:10:13] No, I bought a 2010 Mazda 3 for $6,000 cash.
[00:10:17] And I spent a couple of months shopping around for a good deal.
[00:10:21] I have a thought process I like to follow before spending that goes something like
[00:10:24] this.
[00:10:25] First, I question is this really a need or is it more of a want?
[00:10:30] Wants can be planned and saved for, but needs should be addressed more urgently.
[00:10:35] Then I ask myself if I already own something that can be repurposed for
[00:10:38] this need or if I can borrow something from a friend.
[00:10:42] If I determine that I actually have to buy it, then I'll see if I can get
[00:10:45] it used.
[00:10:46] And if I have to buy it new, I shop around for a good deal.
[00:10:50] And that's another edition of Optimal Finance Daily.
[00:10:53] Thank you for listening, have a great rest of your day and I'll be back tomorrow as
[00:10:56] usual where your optimal life awaits.
