[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Bei Naomi Imatomi-Yuen mit BlueZones.com

[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_01]: One of the first pieces of advice that Dan Buettner, the founder of BlueZones,

[00:01:47] [SPEAKER_01]: always gives as a way to improve your life, health, and happiness

[00:01:51] [SPEAKER_01]: is to sign up to volunteer in your community.

[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a long-term investment in your health

[00:01:56] [SPEAKER_01]: and in your city if you sign up to do it regularly.

[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_01]: And you'll meet like-minded people along the way.

[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_01]: In BlueZones Project Communities,

[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_01]: we use this principle to improve individual and community well-being

[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_01]: by highlighting local volunteer opportunities

[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_01]: and creating opportunities for groups to volunteer together,

[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_01]: like coworkers, congregation members, students, and neighbors.

[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_01]: It turns out that helping others benefits our health,

[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_01]: just as it benefits those we serve through volunteering.

[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Meeting like-minded people and creating a new circle of social networks

[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_01]: improves our lives and the community as a whole.

[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Though Eric Zoot-Payne, a resident of Charlotte, North Carolina,

[00:02:39] [SPEAKER_01]: had made new friends through volunteering at breast cancer awareness events

[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_01]: and participating in All In, an annual poker tournament

[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_01]: to benefit cancer research and care in the Charlotte area,

[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_01]: he had never given back to his alma mater, St. Andrews University,

[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_01]: in Laurenburg, North Carolina.

[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_01]: His college experience was uniquely exciting,

[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_01]: but he left school with an attitude of,

[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_01]: don't look back.

[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_01]: When Payne saw the extensive damage caused to the campus

[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_01]: by Hurricane Florence in September 2019,

[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_01]: a feeling of loss, devastation, and nostalgia came over him.

[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Deeply affected by the photographs he saw online,

[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_01]: over the few months following the hurricane,

[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Payne visited St. Andrews twice,

[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_01]: wondering what he could do to help.

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_01]: According to Payne,

[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_01]: quote,

[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Another alumnus reached out to a group of us.

[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Music festival, swirled around in the conversation,

[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_01]: and I knew how I was going to give back to my school.

[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Volunteering to help gave me all this energy I had stored up for a purpose.

[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I was determined to make this thing happen,

[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_01]: to show my support for the school, my friends, and classmates,

[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_01]: and all those 18, 19, and 20-somethings who were eating their meals out of food trucks in the gymnasium.

[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_01]: End quote.

[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Through the Solfest experience and working with other alumni volunteers,

[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Payne saw a love, commitment, and enthusiasm that was contagious.

[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_01]: It showed that one person who is passionate about something can make a difference,

[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_01]: and restore a person's faith in humanity.

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_01]: But a team of people can regain confidence in the community.

[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_01]: That's a real soul-satisfying experience.

[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Payne now feels a kinship with his new group of volunteer alumni friends

[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_01]: that he says affected his soul in an incredibly positive way.

[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_01]: According to Payne,

[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_01]: It was an honor to be a part of Solfest.

[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I was excited, focused, determined,

[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_01]: thankful, and appreciative of how hard everyone worked to get it done.

[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_01]: After it was over,

[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I was exhausted with the biggest smile on my face.

[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_01]: It's therapeutic to say how I felt about the whole experience.

[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_01]: It came and went,

[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_01]: and I had not given much thought to what we did.

[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_01]: But we raised over $8,000 for hurricane relief for a struggling campus.

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_01]: End quote.

[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Volunteering improves health,

[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_01]: lowers stress,

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_01]: and boosts self-confidence.

[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Volunteering helps because you can see right away the effects of your contribution and commitment.

[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Research has documented the positive feelings that surface during a helper's high.

[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Individuals develop increased trust and social interactions.

[00:05:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Participating as a volunteer with others towards a group cause boosts self-confidence

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_01]: and decreases the risk of depression, especially in the elderly population.

[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Lowered levels of stress hormones have been documented in those who volunteer versus those who don't.

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Social benefits include a new network of friends with shared interests and a sense of purpose.

[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_01]: At the same time, volunteers learn new skills.

[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Volunteering has shown to improve mental and physical health in one study of adults over 60 years of age.

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_01]: In another study, volunteers reported better physical health and life satisfaction.

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_01]: They perceived volunteering as a catalyst to positive changes in their health.

[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_01]: A longitudinal study of aging found that those who volunteer their time have longer lifespans.

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Participants also experienced decreased pain levels from chronic illness.

[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_01]: If you volunteer, you often get more out of it than you give.

[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_01]: It can be an enjoyable experience, such as the music festival, pain help to organize.

[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Besides combating loneliness and bringing joy to your life,

[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_01]: volunteering regularly can also improve physical well-being.

[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_01]: A study published in the Journal of Psychology and Aging showed that volunteers

[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_01]: had lower hypertension risk and higher levels of psychological well-being than non-volunteers.

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Another study published in BMC Public Health concluded that volunteering should be promoted at the public health level

[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_01]: through education and policies to improve the health of community members and the community at large.

[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_01]: They state the focus should primarily be in supporting the elderly population, minority groups,

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_01]: those with a lower educational level, single folks, or those who are unemployed.

[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_01]: If you want to do something right now, Gretchen Rubin's advice for the

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_01]: laziest most excellent good deed to give you a happiness boost and potentially save a life

[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_01]: is to sign up to be an organ donor on your license or in the national or state registry.

[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_01]: You just listened to the post titled,

[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Why Volunteering is One of the Most Powerful Things You Can Do for Your Health

[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_01]: by Naomi Imatome-Yun with BlueZones.com

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Buy low, sell high.

[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_00]: It's easy to say, hard to do.

[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_00]: For example, high interest rates are crushing the real estate market right now.

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Demand is dropping and prices are falling, even for many of the best assets.

[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_00]: It's no wonder the Fundrise flagship fund plans to go on a buying spree,

[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_00]: expanding its billion dollar real estate portfolio over the next few months.

[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_00]: You can add the Fundrise flagship fund to your portfolio in just minutes

[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_00]: and with as little as $10 by visiting fundrise.com slash OFD.

[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_00]: That's F-U-N-D-R-I-S-E dot com slash OFD.

[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of the Fundrise flagship fund before investing.

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_00]: This and other information can be found in the Fund's Perspectus at fundrise.com slash flagship.

[00:08:36] [SPEAKER_00]: This is a paid advertisement.

[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_03]: If you have always right, we say that the clients are always people.

[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_03]: And since we are also people, we want to do something good for us all.

[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Zendesk. Customer Experience with KI for people.

[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Dr. Neil here for my commentary.

[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Positive psychologists and those that study stress management agree on something.

[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_01]: If you want to make yourself feel better and reduce your stress levels at the same time,

[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_01]: the best thing to do is pamper yourself.

[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Put your feet up, have a drink and binge a show.

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh wait, nope.

[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_01]: That's what we think will help us.

[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_01]: But when we actually look at the research,

[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_01]: we find that helping someone else,

[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_01]: making someone else's day,

[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_01]: helps us, the giver, feel better in return.

[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_01]: This means that instead of focusing on ourselves,

[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_01]: if we can direct that energy to helping someone else,

[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_01]: it makes us feel better.

[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_01]: It's one of the best ways to improve our mood and feel less stress.

[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_01]: And in fact, to quote one of my favorite books,

[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Tuesdays with Maury,

[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Maury Schwartz said it best when he said,

[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_01]: quote,

[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_01]: The way you get meaning into your life

[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_01]: is to devote yourself to loving others.

[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Devote yourself to your community around you

[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_01]: and devote yourself to something that gives you purpose and meaning.

[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_01]: End quote.

[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Well said, Maury.

[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_01]: All right, that'll do it for the Monday episode.

[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I hope you have a great start to your week

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'll be back here tomorrow as usual

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_01]: where your optimal life awaits.
