[00:01:06] This is Optimal Finance Daily. Three steps to help you get financially unstuck. By Jamie of Keepthrifty.com.
[00:01:15] And I'm your host and personal finance enthusiast, Diana Merriam.
[00:01:19] Now let's get right to it and continue optimizing your life.
[00:01:27] Three steps to help you get financially unstuck. By Jamie of Keepthrifty.com.
[00:01:35] There was a time when we felt stuck. We felt like our dreams and hopes were unattainable.
[00:01:41] We felt defeated. We struggled during this time in our life and in our marriage.
[00:01:47] But we found a way to pull ourselves out of that hard place and into a better financial situation, allowing us to make our dreams a reality.
[00:01:55] You can do it too. Here are three steps to help you get started.
[00:02:00] Number one, question everything.
[00:02:04] One of the first things we did that helped us in our journey was to question everything.
[00:02:10] When we entered adulthood, we let the world take control of our lives.
[00:02:14] It told us to focus on our careers instead of our marriage.
[00:02:18] It told us to impulsively spend our money instead of focusing on our values.
[00:02:23] Chris worked long hours and added an MBA program to his schedule.
[00:02:28] I worked late into the evenings and every other weekend in the fitness world.
[00:02:33] We spent our paychecks on pottery barn furniture and expensive clothing.
[00:02:38] We never took a vacation or slowed down to enjoy our marriage.
[00:02:43] Our life became about finding our value in what the world thought of us.
[00:02:48] It wasn't until we became a family of five that we realized we were broken.
[00:02:53] We had a nice home and a good job.
[00:02:55] And while we were grateful for this, we found ourselves unhappy.
[00:03:00] Why?
[00:03:01] We wanted more time together.
[00:03:03] At first, it felt like there was nothing we could do.
[00:03:06] Chris needed to work his 40 plus hours.
[00:03:09] We needed the paycheck.
[00:03:11] But what if we didn't need the paycheck?
[00:03:13] What would we do?
[00:03:15] Chris talked about working in a job that allowed flexibility,
[00:03:19] remote work, and ample vacation time.
[00:03:21] Maybe even entering the world of entrepreneurship.
[00:03:24] We talked about taking weekday hikes, traveling around the world, and walking our girls to school.
[00:03:31] Once we created this vision, a vision that aligned with our own values,
[00:03:35] we found the strength to question more.
[00:03:38] Were we handling our money in a way that was leading us in the direction we wanted to go?
[00:03:43] Were our current possessions helping us live the life we wanted?
[00:03:47] What changes could we make to our life that would get us closer to the life we wanted?
[00:03:53] Number two, don't be afraid to experiment.
[00:03:56] After asking ourselves all those questions,
[00:03:59] we realized that we wanted to simplify our life and make room for our dreams.
[00:04:05] Simplifying can be daunting, especially if the changes are going to be permanent.
[00:04:10] How would we know if we were making a mistake?
[00:04:13] But here's the thing.
[00:04:14] We didn't have to make permanent changes right away.
[00:04:17] We could practice, pretend, and experiment.
[00:04:21] We parked our Prius in the garage for one month,
[00:04:24] choosing to only drive our minivan to see if we could make it work.
[00:04:28] We boxed up clothes, toys, and other household items,
[00:04:32] storing them in the basement, pretending we didn't have them.
[00:04:35] We experimented with floor sleeping.
[00:04:39] We closed off parts of our house,
[00:04:41] pretending we had less square footage and a single bathroom.
[00:04:45] Chris asked to work from home on Fridays,
[00:04:48] getting a feel for remote work.
[00:04:51] And number three, take action.
[00:04:53] Our experiments gave us the confidence to take action in changing our life.
[00:04:59] We realized we could live with one vehicle.
[00:05:02] We sold the Prius, and with the money we received,
[00:05:05] we were able to pay off our minivan loan
[00:05:08] and make a nice principal payment on our mortgage.
[00:05:11] Most of the items stored in the basement were donated and sold.
[00:05:15] The money we made was helpful,
[00:05:17] but more importantly, we realized we didn't need to buy more stuff,
[00:05:22] saving us money in the long run
[00:05:24] and making room in our budget for travel.
[00:05:27] Pretending to live in half our house
[00:05:29] turned into selling our home,
[00:05:32] moving into an apartment,
[00:05:33] and building our little white shack
[00:05:35] coming in summer of 2019.
[00:05:38] The money we made from selling our home
[00:05:40] allowed Chris to take a one-year mini retirement
[00:05:43] and find a remote job he loves.
[00:05:46] If you're feeling stuck in life right now,
[00:05:49] start questioning the constraints you're living within.
[00:05:52] Then start experimenting with how you can make changes.
[00:05:55] And after you followed through on those experiments
[00:05:58] and found answers to your questions,
[00:06:01] take action to make a significant impact on your future.
[00:06:04] What would you accomplish if you questioned the status quo
[00:06:08] and experimented with a new way of life?
[00:06:10] You just listened to the post titled,
[00:06:17] Three Steps to Help You Get Financially Unstuck
[00:06:20] by Jamie of Keepthrifty.com.
[00:06:23] And I'll be right back with my commentary.
[00:06:25] Buy low, sell high.
[00:06:27] It's easy to say, hard to do.
[00:06:30] For example, high interest rates
[00:06:32] are crushing the real estate market right now.
[00:06:35] Demand is dropping and prices are falling,
[00:06:38] even for many of the best assets.
[00:06:40] It's no wonder the Fundrise flagship fund
[00:06:44] plans to go on a buying spree,
[00:06:46] expanding its billion dollar real estate portfolio
[00:06:49] over the next few months.
[00:06:50] You can add the Fundrise flagship fund
[00:06:53] to your portfolio in just minutes.
[00:06:56] And with as little as $10,
[00:06:58] by visiting fundrise.com slash OFD.
[00:07:02] That's F-U-N-D-R-I-S-E dot com slash OFD.
[00:07:08] Carefully consider the investment objectives,
[00:07:11] risks, charges, and expenses
[00:07:13] of the Fundrise flagship fund before investing.
[00:07:17] This and other information can be found
[00:07:20] in the fund's prospectus at fundrise.com slash flagship.
[00:07:25] This is a paid advertisement.
[00:07:28] I loved the encouragement in this article
[00:07:31] to question our assumptions.
[00:07:33] When I first started learning about money,
[00:07:35] the FIRE movement appealed to me
[00:07:37] because it questioned the assumption
[00:07:39] that you must work a nine-to-five until you're 65.
[00:07:43] The idea that I would retire from my corporate career
[00:07:46] at 33 years old
[00:07:48] was not even on my radar
[00:07:50] just 10 years earlier.
[00:07:52] It's amazing how quickly things can change
[00:07:55] when you deepen your ability
[00:07:57] to think critically about your social conditioning.
[00:08:01] Another assumption that the FIRE movement
[00:08:03] turned on its head for me
[00:08:04] is that getting out of debt
[00:08:05] would be a miserable process.
[00:08:07] That spending less
[00:08:09] always means enjoying life less.
[00:08:12] In my experience,
[00:08:13] life got so much better
[00:08:15] when I became more intentional about spending
[00:08:17] and used creativity and resourcefulness
[00:08:20] to get my needs met.
[00:08:22] Using my time in less consumerist ways
[00:08:25] looked like reading more books from the library,
[00:08:28] taking more walks,
[00:08:30] journaling,
[00:08:30] and building the capacity
[00:08:32] to enjoy my own company.
[00:08:34] Spending less
[00:08:35] helped me discover
[00:08:37] that the best things in life are free
[00:08:39] and my happiness is not found
[00:08:41] in new stuff or an inflated lifestyle.
[00:08:43] When applied strategically,
[00:08:46] good personal finance practices
[00:08:48] can turn into excellent
[00:08:50] personal development habits.
[00:08:52] And that'll do it for today.
[00:08:54] Have a great day
[00:08:55] and start to your weekend.
[00:08:56] Thank you for listening
[00:08:57] and I'll be back here tomorrow
[00:08:59] where optimal life awaits.
