[00:01:13] Hello everybody and thank you so much for joining me yet again here on ORD.

[00:01:18] I'm Greg Audino, your host and narrator. Really glad to have you here over the weekend.

[00:01:23] Now in today's episode I'll be sharing an article from Lisa Merlot Booth.

[00:01:27] A really interesting one. All about this negative cycle of poor communication

[00:01:32] that men and women can often, not always, but often get stuck in.

[00:01:37] So listen on for ways to find your way out and improve your communication skills

[00:01:41] as we jump into the article now and optimize your life.

[00:01:48] The Deer in the Headlights Phenomenon.

[00:01:51] Communication Blunder in Relationships by Lisa Merlot Booth of LisaMerlotBooth.com.

[00:01:57] I often hear from women that their partners aren't interested in what they have to say,

[00:02:02] talk very little and emotionally don't offer much.

[00:02:06] When I check in with the men about this, the men often report that they are different

[00:02:11] from the women and don't need to talk as much.

[00:02:14] They also report that at times they have no idea what to say if they were to talk.

[00:02:19] Many men complain that the women seem to talk non-stop and they wish the women would quiet down.

[00:02:25] After hearing these complaints over and over again,

[00:02:28] I began to see what both the men and the women were talking about.

[00:02:32] The men were indeed offering very little and in response to the men's silence,

[00:02:37] the women would often talk incessantly in an attempt to get a response from the men.

[00:02:42] Naturally the relentless talking led to the men tuning the women out

[00:02:46] and that led to the women persisting in talking.

[00:02:49] Obviously this dance was and is a lose-lose for both men and women.

[00:02:54] On the male side of the equation, their lack of communication was at times nothing short of astounding.

[00:03:01] On many occasions I watched as the men stared at their partners with a blank look on their faces

[00:03:06] and literally added nothing to a conversation.

[00:03:09] They did not nod, utter a word or even sigh in response to what their partners were saying.

[00:03:16] This non-reaction was true when the women were giving a compliment, sharing a thought,

[00:03:21] complaining or even asking a question.

[00:03:24] What the women were saying was irrelevant.

[00:03:27] The men almost immediately when the women began speaking would look like a deer in the headlights

[00:03:32] and say absolutely nothing.

[00:03:34] I've seen this happen so many times that I now call it the deer in the headlight phenomenon.

[00:03:40] When I asked the men if they heard what their partners said,

[00:03:44] without fail they would report they did.

[00:03:47] When I asked why they didn't respond, they either said because they didn't think a response was needed

[00:03:53] or they didn't know how to respond.

[00:03:56] On the female side of the equation, the women would watch the men not respond

[00:04:01] and would assume the men hadn't heard them, hadn't understood them or didn't get it.

[00:04:07] The women would then invariably talk more in an effort to explain what they said

[00:04:12] or to get the men to see what they meant.

[00:04:15] Not surprisingly, the more the women talked, the more the men tuned out

[00:04:19] and the more the men tuned out, the more the women talked.

[00:04:23] Yikes!

[00:04:24] If this is happening in your relationship, here's how you fix it.

[00:04:28] Men, if someone is speaking to you, acknowledge that they have spoken.

[00:04:33] To do otherwise is just plain rude.

[00:04:36] Here's a list of options to choose from to help you out.

[00:04:39] Note, don't forget to mix them up from time to time.

[00:04:42] Shake your head.

[00:04:44] Only do this once in a while since it's not very relational if that's all you do.

[00:04:48] Make a comment.

[00:04:50] Ask a question.

[00:04:52] Say you understand.

[00:04:54] Share a similar story from your own life.

[00:04:57] Laugh if appropriate.

[00:04:59] Hold her hand if it's warranted.

[00:05:01] Say you're sorry she feels that way if it fits.

[00:05:04] And if you're really at a loss, tell her you heard her

[00:05:07] and have no idea how to respond.

[00:05:10] The bottom line is, say or do something

[00:05:13] and don't just sit there like a deer in the headlights.

[00:05:16] The more silent you remain, the more talkative she will become.

[00:05:20] Intimacy requires a sharing of oneself with another.

[00:05:23] Emotionally, physically and spiritually.

[00:05:26] Start talking.

[00:05:28] Women, if your partner has that deer in the headlights look

[00:05:31] and is offering little emotionally or in a conversation,

[00:05:34] don't keep talking.

[00:05:36] Stop trying to explain, pleading for him to talk,

[00:05:39] showing him how unrelational he's being,

[00:05:42] getting him to understand, etc.

[00:05:45] Remember that less is more.

[00:05:47] Tell him directly and succinctly what you want.

[00:05:50] If you want him to answer your question,

[00:05:53] state, will you please answer my question?

[00:05:56] If you want him to be supportive,

[00:05:58] say, can you just say that sounds hard, honey?

[00:06:02] And if no matter what you ask for,

[00:06:05] he continues to not be emotionally available,

[00:06:08] then be clear that he's hurting your relationship.

[00:06:11] Take the time to figure out what you will do about that

[00:06:13] and let him know.

[00:06:15] Do not make false threats,

[00:06:17] but make sure you follow up on your words with actions.

[00:06:20] Whatever you do, stop chasing him.

[00:06:23] The more you chase, the more he will run.

[00:06:26] Challenge.

[00:06:27] Pay attention to how you communicate with your partner

[00:06:30] and make sure you are holding up your part of the equation.

[00:06:33] Share yourself and listen when your partner shares.

[00:06:36] Don't over-talk or under-talk, chase or run.

[00:06:40] Be present and work your side.

[00:08:49] And thanks very much to Lisa

[00:08:51] for her insights and observations today.

[00:08:54] I thought her list of recommendations for men

[00:08:56] on how to become more engaged was pretty interesting.

[00:08:59] You see, it's easy to look at a list like that

[00:09:01] and think that Lisa is suggesting to men

[00:09:03] that they just give the appearance of listening

[00:09:06] as opposed to actually tuning into what their partners have to say.

[00:09:09] However, we often forget that making an external change

[00:09:13] can and does influence an internal change.

[00:09:16] Just like if you stand up straighter,

[00:09:18] you do start to feel a bit more confident.

[00:09:21] If you have a hard time listening to your partner or anybody,

[00:09:24] displaying the physical signs of listening

[00:09:27] can help you to become a more engaged listener in reality, internally.

[00:09:31] There's no shame behind having a hard time listening.

[00:09:34] You know, it's easy to be distracted

[00:09:36] or spend time in our own heads these days.

[00:09:38] But today we learned about steps we can take to fight against that,

[00:09:41] so use them.

[00:09:42] Now thanks a lot to Lisa once again

[00:09:44] for helping us find the way back.

[00:09:46] But for now it is time to get going

[00:09:48] and wrap up another episode.

[00:09:49] I thank you as always for being here folks

[00:09:51] and for doing a good thing for your relationships by tuning in.

[00:09:54] Have a great rest of your day

[00:09:55] and be sure to come join again tomorrow

[00:09:57] where your optimal life awaits.
