[00:00:48] This is Optimal Relationships Daily. Eight Reasons Being a Stay At Home Mom Is Better Than Being at Work by Shawna Scafe of SimpleOnPurpose.ca.

[00:01:00] Have kids, they said. It'll be fun, they said. It is also challenging, heart-wrenching, exhausting, and endless. Four years and three kids in, I can tell you, one, I have no clue what I'm really doing, and two, no, like really, I just make waffles, drink coffee, and say a prayer that we will all make it through the day without endless tantrums and napping strikes.

[00:01:23] I'm home with the kids, and my husband works full-time.

[00:01:26] I gave up my career to be a stay-at-home mom by choice, but don't feel sorry for me.

[00:01:31] I can also say I know something about being a working mom.

[00:01:35] I went back to work part-time when I was pregnant with Linnea.

[00:01:38] I finally wore white again and was refreshed to bring back the professional part of myself.

[00:01:44] It was a good experience, to a point.

[00:01:47] It was now two jobs, one at work and one at home, that I had to catch up on each time I left.

[00:01:53] It was our family time cut in half that I couldn't make up anywhere else.

[00:01:57] I truly don't know how some of you ladies work and mom it up.

[00:02:01] It is exhausting.

[00:02:02] I wish I could buy you all a meal service subscription so you never have to cook dinners again.

[00:02:08] Oh, I suppose we could get into a debate on who has more meaning in their life, who has it easier and harder, stay-at-home moms or working moms.

[00:02:17] Sure, but that would be clickbait.

[00:02:19] And sure, my page views would rock it.

[00:02:22] And sure, all my blogging goals would be fulfilled this month.

[00:02:25] Move over, old Shauna.

[00:02:26] Shauna 2.0 is here with controversy and blogging success.

[00:02:30] Booyah!

[00:02:31] But, to me, it doesn't have to be a heated debate.

[00:02:35] Big blogging goals aside, the only issue is that every mom is different and does what works for her family.

[00:02:41] What I will say is that, for me, being a stay-at-home mom has been the most imperfectly perfect situation.

[00:02:49] Despite the picture painted of stay-at-home moms that they are constantly frazzled and disheveled with never a moment to herself,

[00:02:55] possible Stockholm Syndrome for being held hostage by toddlers,

[00:02:58] I'm not a victim of my children or slave to my husband.

[00:03:02] What motherhood looks like changes like seasons.

[00:03:05] Even within every day, there are high highs and low lows.

[00:03:09] But every day is my own choice.

[00:03:12] Right now, I'm sitting on a deck with a fresh coffee while the kids play in the yard.

[00:03:16] Right now, I am writing because this blog is my passion, and maybe one day will be my business.

[00:03:23] Right now, I am being interrupted at the rate of once every 1.5 minutes,

[00:03:27] and this post will likely take me four attempts to complete.

[00:03:31] Status update, it took five tries.

[00:03:33] Sure, there are days where I hope nobody stops by because I can't remember if I put on deodorant,

[00:03:39] can't find the source of all that horrible smell in the bathroom,

[00:03:42] and Linnea keeps bringing all the tampons out of my room and interrogating me on what they are for.

[00:03:47] There are days the kids are so hard to handle that my husband walks in the door,

[00:03:51] and I walk right out to have some peace.

[00:03:54] But this was all my choice.

[00:03:56] Being a stay-at-home mom doesn't make me a martyr, a hero,

[00:04:00] or a watered-down, impassive version of myself living in sweatpants.

[00:04:04] It does have some perks, not just limited to catnaps and mismatched fuzzy socks.

[00:04:09] Being a SAHM, stay-at-home mom, slash WAHM, work-at-home mom can be tough.

[00:04:16] But I just think of the reasons I prefer my stay-at-home mom life to my working office-bound life.

[00:04:22] Number one, the only cell phone policy is,

[00:04:26] Mom, you have to say, say, cheese sauce.

[00:04:31] I can spend all day texting my friends, communicating primarily in emojis,

[00:04:36] and posting pics of my laundry to Instagram.

[00:04:39] Two, I can make waffles and espresso 24-7

[00:04:42] and get no side-eye about coffee breaks and overbrunching.

[00:04:46] Three, when or if I do a workout at nap time,

[00:04:50] I can stay smelly or even treat myself to a shower

[00:04:53] without the hassle of having a sailor shower in the work bathroom.

[00:04:57] Four, there are no agendas.

[00:05:00] Want moms over for tea? Go for it.

[00:05:02] Want to go to the park? Back up those snacks.

[00:05:05] Want to spend the day in PJs learning Spanish from Dora and Arrested Development?

[00:05:09] Eres la mujer.

[00:05:10] Five, two words.

[00:05:12] Second, breakfast.

[00:05:14] They are so a thing.

[00:05:16] So is boozy popsicle on the deck time and Mom's special coffee o'clock.

[00:05:21] Six, 90% of my daily problems and interpersonal dramas can be resolved with

[00:05:27] fruit snacks, band-aids, and convincing my kids that their toys can come to life

[00:05:32] and emote sadness if they are mean to one another.

[00:05:35] Seven, if I don't like someone's bad behavior,

[00:05:38] I can send them to their room or take their toys away.

[00:05:41] Then, pull them close to me and smush their warm face against mine,

[00:05:45] and all is well again.

[00:05:47] And eight, I am in full control of the important things in my life,

[00:05:51] like my thermostat, disposal of expired condiments in the fridge,

[00:05:55] toilet paper selection, and what passes as an ergonomically correct workspace.

[00:06:00] Of course, the ultimate reason is that I can be with my kids while they are still small.

[00:06:06] This is the life I wanted to live, rather than the living I wanted to earn.

[00:06:10] It is the choice that was right for us,

[00:06:13] especially since we are trying to live our life on purpose.

[00:06:20] You just listened to the post titled,

[00:06:37] Surprise, I am not a mother,

[00:06:39] but I do understand more and more as I host this show how valuable it is to remain balanced,

[00:06:47] purposeful, and grateful amidst the trials and tribulations that motherhood provides.

[00:06:52] It is such a pleasure to continue to bring Shauna's work to you and assist mothers everywhere,

[00:06:56] yet another scenario in which some of the most stressful times that call us to sacrifice greatly
