[00:01:00] This is Optimal Work Daily Episode 1258.

[00:01:04] Head it towards burnout.

[00:01:05] Here's what you need to do.

[00:01:06] By Christine Comoford of SmartTribesInstitute.com.

[00:01:10] And I'm Dan, your personal narrator here,

[00:01:12] and I'm going to keep this intro nice and short for you

[00:01:15] on this Monday episode.

[00:01:16] So let's get to it now as we optimize your life.

[00:01:23] Headed towards burnout.

[00:01:24] Here's what you need to do, by Christine Comoford of smarttribesinstitute.com.

[00:01:30] As leaders, we are expected to be highly present, have clear and consistent insights,

[00:01:37] maintain significant levels of energy, and stay grounded regardless of circumstances.

[00:01:42] Yet in today's world of relentless change,

[00:01:45] this can be challenging.

[00:01:46] When's the last time you focused on you?

[00:01:49] It's not selfish, it's necessary.

[00:01:52] There's an infinite amount of work,

[00:01:54] especially as a leader in your organization.

[00:01:56] Sometimes you just need to put the brakes on

[00:01:58] because there will always be more work.

[00:02:00] Your mind is active all day long

[00:02:02] with some 60,000 separate thoughts each and every day.

[00:02:06] With all of those thoughts, it's not surprising that your mind becomes so loud that

[00:02:10] we lose focus.

[00:02:11] We know we shouldn't get freaked out and anxious.

[00:02:14] We know staying present will enable us to find better solutions.

[00:02:18] We know we should be getting a good night's rest to tackle the situation with a fresh

[00:02:22] mind the next day.

[00:02:24] But we can't always get there without help.

[00:02:26] We've been hijacked.

[00:02:28] Our patterns are in charge.

[00:02:30] We're human.

[00:02:31] If you don't take time to pause and decide to keep going on your current path or change

[00:02:36] a few things that will make a big difference in your life, you may burn out.

[00:02:39] It's okay to take a look and say, hey, this isn't working and implement a few changes

[00:02:44] that will steer you towards a destination that isn't painful.

[00:02:48] No one has time to process every single blip in their life.

[00:02:51] We can't track down the source of every pattern, and sometimes it's not a pattern.

[00:02:55] It's just life.

[00:02:56] So how do we take care of our health and stay mindful of what's important when life throws

[00:03:01] us a curveball?

[00:03:02] Here are tools that my executive coaching clients use that have empowered them to avoid burnout.

[00:03:08] Release the resistance, resistance, versus allowing.

[00:03:12] Look at ten things in your life or in the world that you don't want or like.

[00:03:17] Tacky wallpaper, etc.

[00:03:19] And look at each one and say out loud, I do not consent to you.

[00:03:23] In other words, it's not okay that they are there.

[00:03:26] See how that feels in your body? Feel free to use emotion wheel. Now look at the 10 things again.

[00:03:32] They didn't disappear even though you didn't consent to them. Now look at each of the 10 things

[00:03:37] again. Say, I consent to you for each. Heck, they are there anyway, so not much point in resisting

[00:03:43] this fact. Consent isn't approval, it's just acknowledgement, so not much point in resisting this fact.

[00:03:45] Consent isn't approval, it's just acknowledgement. See how that feels in your body. Reflect

[00:03:50] on the feelings associated with not consenting or resisting what is, versus consenting

[00:03:56] or acknowledging what is. Optimism isn't universal consent. It's okay if things aren't

[00:04:02] okay with you. Notice what it's like to let them be not okay, and yet acknowledge that they are there without energetically resisting them.

[00:04:11] Manuvers of consciousness. First, think of something you are resisting. Now do the following steps.

[00:04:18] Negative evaluation. Three minutes. Say out loud all the things you don't like. What's bad about this?

[00:04:25] What you can't stand.

[00:04:27] Really trash it.

[00:04:28] Notice what are the feelings here?

[00:04:30] Then break state.

[00:04:32] Ask a non sequitur question or count something or shake your body out.

[00:04:37] Curiosity.

[00:04:38] 3 minutes.

[00:04:40] Now get really curious about this situation.

[00:04:42] How did it come to be?

[00:04:44] What is familiar about it? What good things come to be? What is familiar about it?

[00:04:45] What good things come from it?

[00:04:47] What are the feelings here?

[00:04:48] Then, break state.

[00:04:51] Amazement.

[00:04:52] Three minutes.

[00:04:53] Now become amazed that it came to be.

[00:04:56] Wow, this is fascinating.

[00:04:58] What's amazing about it?

[00:05:00] What are the feelings here?

[00:05:01] Then break state.

[00:05:03] Full appreciation.

[00:05:05] Three minutes.

[00:05:06] Now, honor everything about this situation or state.

[00:05:10] Yes, this has been so very helpful in order to bring me to the next level.

[00:05:14] Wow, so much gratitude and appreciation.

[00:05:17] What are the feelings here?

[00:05:19] Then break state.

[00:05:20] Finally, do a short outcome frame.

[00:05:23] Map out a clear vision of your desired

[00:05:25] state for 15 minutes minimum. Bask in it and ask each question in detail.

[00:05:31] outcome frame. 1. What would you like? Something you can create and maintain.

[00:05:37] 2. What will having that do for you? What will you get? What are the benefits?

[00:05:42] 3. How will you know when you have it?

[00:05:45] The criteria or proof that you got it?

[00:05:48] Four. When, where and with whom would you like it?

[00:05:52] Scope and timing.

[00:05:54] Five. What a value might you risk or lose?

[00:05:57] Get present to the risk and what might change.

[00:06:00] And six. What are your next steps?

[00:06:03] Get into action.

[00:06:06] Emotion wheel. Use the Emotion wheel pictures in this post to help understand what you are

[00:06:11] feeling. The center feelings are the core feelings. The Emotion wheel can help you get to the

[00:06:16] core emotion you are experiencing. Increase your emotional vocabulary and make connections you may

[00:06:22] not have otherwise made. Choose the meaning.

[00:06:26] No matter what happens outside of us,

[00:06:28] we always get to choose the meaning we make about it inside.

[00:06:31] An example, lots of things are changing,

[00:06:34] lots of short-notice client requests and deadlines.

[00:06:37] Meaning-making option number one.

[00:06:40] This is so stressful, I'm emotionally exhausted by this.

[00:06:43] It's all too much.

[00:06:45] Result of this meaning equals missed deadlines in complete work.

[00:06:49] Stress for yourself and those that have to deal with the missed deadlines or incomplete

[00:06:53] or low quality work.

[00:06:55] No fun for anyone and certainly no ease, grace, joy.

[00:07:00] Meaning making option number two.

[00:07:02] Yes, change means movement and growth and a chance to really shine and pace myself.

[00:07:07] I will show up fully to serve our awesome tribe.

[00:07:10] How great that I get to tap my awesome brain

[00:07:12] to become even more clear, find even more solutions

[00:07:15] as I focus on the outcomes I want to create.

[00:07:18] Result of this meaning equals empowerment,

[00:07:21] choice of how to respond versus compulsively react,

[00:07:24] ease, grace, joy, support of self and others, shine my light, honor my company values,

[00:07:31] and choose my reality.

[00:07:33] So which meaning would you like to make?

[00:07:36] Our words shape our reality, and meaning making and reframing our key to shape our reality.

[00:07:42] The key to avoid burnout is to visualize the person

[00:07:45] you want to be, set your intentions, and get out of your own way.

[00:07:53] You just listened to the post titled, Edit Towards Burnout, Here's what you need to do.
