[00:01:00] This is OptimalWork Daily, episode 1276.

[00:01:04] Finding a job you love. Five things you need to do by Martin Biergegard with tinybuda.com.

[00:01:11] And I am Dan your host and narrator here and welcome back to another episode of Optimal Work Daily

[00:01:16] where I read to you from some of the very best articles around covering your work life.

[00:01:21] Kind of like an ongoing audiobook and it's totally free.

[00:01:24] So with that let's get right to the post and start optimizing your life.

[00:01:32] Finding a job you love. Five things you need to do by Martin Biergegard with tinybuda.com.

[00:01:40] Quote, choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.

[00:01:46] And quote, Confucius. I once worked for a big international consultancy firm.

[00:01:52] Okay, it's McKinsey. Don't tell anyone. And I hated it.

[00:01:56] Everyone told me how lucky I was to have that job.

[00:01:58] They went on and on about how prestigious it was, how I got to travel the world,

[00:02:02] work with executives on the big topics and hang out with brilliant colleagues.

[00:02:07] As much as all of that is true, I still hated the job. Not because of McKinsey but because of me.

[00:02:13] It might be a dream job for a lot of people but it surely wasn't for me.

[00:02:18] It was a nightmare and in the end I couldn't sleep anymore.

[00:02:21] At which point a nightmare in the literal meaning of the word started to seem very attractive to me.

[00:02:26] Have you ever gone without sleep for days?

[00:02:28] If you have, then you know it's not sustainable for very long.

[00:02:32] After four days I was a zombie and a miserable one at that.

[00:02:36] I was on the verge of a breakdown and I knew that something needed to change.

[00:02:40] In hindsight it was so obvious what that something was.

[00:02:43] But back then 12 years ago I had totally lost my way.

[00:02:47] Fortunately I finally gathered up enough courage or desperation to pick up the phone and call my HR manager.

[00:02:53] I quit and then I went to bed and slept like a baby for 20 hours straight.

[00:02:58] Two months later I landed a job that I genuinely could love.

[00:03:01] And two years later I was running my own company.

[00:03:05] Since then my co-founders and I have grown our company to 200 employees with offices in London, Berlin and Copenhagen.

[00:03:12] More importantly I'm able to have fun, learn at a fast pace and maintain a great work-life balance even from day one.

[00:03:19] From these two contrasting experiences I have learned five lessons that I use to keep myself on the right track

[00:03:26] and that might be useful for you too.

[00:03:28] Number one don't settle.

[00:03:31] It's so easy to fall victim to the idea that we should just be grateful to have a job,

[00:03:35] especially in times where the economy is bad.

[00:03:38] As much as I'm a fan of gratitude, if your job is not making you happy

[00:03:42] then it's not the right thing for you to be spending 50% or more of your waking hours doing.

[00:03:48] Period.

[00:03:49] Of course we can all have moments of doubt and bad days.

[00:03:52] Congratulations for being human.

[00:03:54] But if you dread going to work more often than not

[00:03:57] then it's time to connect to your inner strength and creativity to move on to a new mission.

[00:04:02] Two be courageous.

[00:04:05] I recently came across a happiness study that showed a positive correlation between courage and happiness.

[00:04:11] At first that seemed a bit odd to me, but then I understood.

[00:04:14] Brave people get more out of their lives because they dare to break out,

[00:04:18] let go of their past and embrace the unknown.

[00:04:21] They grow more, learn more and live more intensely.

[00:04:25] Thus they are happier.

[00:04:27] Since this realization every time I get fearful I ask myself,

[00:04:31] is this a happiness enhancer in disguise?

[00:04:34] Of course sometimes courage comes in the form of non-action.

[00:04:37] Staying where you are even if it is difficult is also courageous.

[00:04:41] Only you can distinguish the difference between growing and fleeing.

[00:04:45] Statistically most of us are biased toward the non-action end of the spectrum,

[00:04:49] so it makes sense to contemplate if we are staying put in a job,

[00:04:53] in a relationship, in the city because we are brave or because we are afraid.

[00:04:58] Three follow the one-year rule.

[00:05:01] Let's say that you have realized that you need to move on in your life

[00:05:04] and that you are courageous enough to act on it.

[00:05:07] Good for you, however sometimes you will find that you are actually stuck.

[00:05:11] Maybe you really need your paycheck at the end of each month.

[00:05:14] You may even have children to provide for.

[00:05:16] What do you do then?

[00:05:18] The one-year rule goes like this.

[00:05:20] Make a plan and a firm commitment to yourself that one year from now

[00:05:24] you will have sorted out your problems and be in a much better place.

[00:05:27] With planning, creativity and patience most things are possible.

[00:05:32] Four leave your priorities.

[00:05:35] More than once you've probably listened to someone go on about how their children

[00:05:38] are their number one priority or how they value good health.

[00:05:41] Then you wondered if their actions were really in line with these beliefs.

[00:05:45] Worse yet sometimes we have been that person.

[00:05:48] When we say that our daughter or son means everything to us

[00:05:51] then that statement needs to be backed by recognizable action.

[00:05:55] This could mean picking up your child early from kindergarten and being present

[00:05:58] while you play with Legos together.

[00:06:00] Maybe your priorities are very different from mine and that's fine too.

[00:06:04] The point is that we each need to be clear on what's important to us

[00:06:07] and then live according to that blueprint.

[00:06:09] Otherwise, we end up with regret and low self-respect.

[00:06:13] For me, working at McKinsey wasn't the right thing to do

[00:06:15] because that required me to be an always on type of guy.

[00:06:19] I needed a job where I had much more freedom.

[00:06:21] That was my priority.

[00:06:24] And five, don't believe the naysayers.

[00:06:27] It's amazing how many well-intended friends, family members and colleagues

[00:06:31] are more than willing to tell us when our ideas, visions or plans are unrealistic.

[00:06:36] They tell us that we should rather be grateful for what we have,

[00:06:39] whether it's a job, a spouse or something else.

[00:06:42] Our parents can especially be a strong source of our self-doubt.

[00:06:46] Parents are inherently risk averse on behalf of their children.

[00:06:49] That's fine, but we, their children, shouldn't pay too much attention to that.

[00:06:53] My dad thought it was the silliest thing that I wanted to write a book.

[00:06:56] There are so many books out there already, he said.

[00:06:59] Shouldn't you rather focus on your business?

[00:07:01] I didn't listen and I'm happy about that.

[00:07:04] What advice from your friends and family should you make sure to avoid?

[00:07:07] Here's a tip.

[00:07:08] The next time someone is projecting their own fears and limitations on you,

[00:07:12] imagine a huge trash man between you

[00:07:15] and visualize all of their words slipping into that bin before they even reach you.

[00:07:19] Don't be upset with other people.

[00:07:21] They are allowed to have their own beliefs and opinions.

[00:07:24] Just remember that it has nothing to do with you, even when they claim it does.

[00:07:28] If you follow these five simple rules, I believe that work can become much more of a gift in your life

[00:07:33] rather than an obligation.

[00:07:35] It certainly worked for me and I am by no means unique.

[00:07:38] Or we all are.

[00:07:40] You deserve a job you truly love and if you haven't found it already,

[00:07:43] it's probably out there looking for you.

[00:07:49] You just listen to the post titled,
