[00:00:37] If you take a hard look at your career,
[00:00:40] you'll see hundreds of failures.
[00:00:42] A failure is rarely a dramatic occurrence.
[00:00:44] Most are usually small
[00:00:46] and hardly leave a blip on our awareness.
[00:00:48] No matter how small, the blip is registered
[00:00:50] and it often builds or reduces confidence.
[00:00:53] So if we break down our work happiness psyche,
[00:00:56] it all comes down to our ability
[00:00:57] to deal with each obstacle
[00:00:59] and how we use these experiences to build our careers.
[00:01:02] Many people encounter difficulties
[00:01:04] and they either give up or avoid the challenge
[00:01:07] instead of pushing through their fears.
[00:01:09] Fear has dictated many of my actions.
[00:01:12] When I didn't enjoy my job,
[00:01:13] it was usually because I was afraid of something.
[00:01:16] For instance, not being able to find a job
[00:01:19] that I really liked,
[00:01:20] so I kept quitting and looking for something else.
[00:01:22] Being fired because I didn't want to put effort
[00:01:25] into something that wasn't rewarding me properly
[00:01:27] and trying really hard
[00:01:29] and still getting caught in a tough position.
[00:01:31] So I would just coast along
[00:01:33] doing work that was just okay.
[00:01:35] Fear is based in assumptions.
[00:01:37] We assume that our boss doesn't care about our hard work,
[00:01:39] so what's the point of trying?
[00:01:41] We assume that our hard work doesn't matter.
[00:01:44] Our fear holds us back from reaching true greatness.
[00:01:47] The funny thing is that even the greatest business people
[00:01:49] often see faults in the choices they make.
[00:01:52] The difference is that they don't let the fear
[00:01:54] dictate their future decisions.
[00:01:56] I've seen dozens of people get fired
[00:01:58] because they did not put their full effort
[00:02:00] into making their job a success.
[00:02:02] They either wanted something easier
[00:02:03] or something more challenging.
[00:02:05] They were stuck on the seesaw of emotions,
[00:02:07] flying high or low,
[00:02:09] never really knowing what they wanted.
[00:02:11] Ask yourself, are you truly happy where you are?
[00:02:14] If not, you have choices
[00:02:16] and it's up to you to empower your career
[00:02:19] and give it a good kick in the...
[00:02:21] Help yourself make a choice.
[00:02:23] When you lay out all your options,
[00:02:25] it's easier to see what you need to do
[00:02:26] to find a career that will get you excited
[00:02:28] and keep your energy level high,
[00:02:30] whether it be a new perspective on the present job
[00:02:33] or doing something completely different.
[00:02:35] Some of you may make lists of all the pros and cons
[00:02:37] of staying at your present job,
[00:02:39] use mind mapping techniques
[00:02:41] or talk to a trusted friend who knows you almost
[00:02:43] as well as you know yourself.
[00:02:45] The only way to do work that you enjoy
[00:02:47] is to take risks,
[00:02:49] things like ask for new tasks at your present job,
[00:02:52] try a similar job at another company,
[00:02:54] go back to school,
[00:02:56] experiment with other jobs
[00:02:57] that you think will hold your interest
[00:02:59] or start a company.
[00:03:01] Some of you may not love your jobs
[00:03:02] but you're okay with this
[00:03:04] because you get to do what you love on the weekends.
[00:03:06] If you do a decent job that you enjoy
[00:03:08] and it doesn't create that much stress,
[00:03:10] then don't be afraid to keep doing it.
[00:03:12] You don't need to conquer the world
[00:03:13] if you enjoy what you do.
[00:03:15] However, from most of you,
[00:03:16] this won't cut it.
[00:03:17] So you need to find what type of work
[00:03:19] will trigger the most happiness.
[00:03:22] An emotional foundation.
[00:03:24] It's all about being honest with who you are
[00:03:26] and what you want.
[00:03:27] If you need to wake up and get excited
[00:03:29] about what you do to earn a living,
[00:03:31] then it's time to make a plan.
[00:03:33] You need to do some soul searching
[00:03:34] and write a list of emotional needs
[00:03:36] as related to your career.
[00:03:38] When working happy,
[00:03:39] money isn't always a powerful motivator.
[00:03:42] Your career happiness will most likely depend
[00:03:44] on two main factors,
[00:03:45] your ability to feel productive
[00:03:47] and the people you work with.
[00:03:49] I created a list about five years ago
[00:03:51] and my shortened version looks like this.
[00:03:53] One, writing, poetry, marketing and business,
[00:03:58] self-help and novels.
[00:04:00] Two, public speaking, although it made me nervous,
[00:04:04] it got me excited.
[00:04:06] Three, flexibility, ability to go and be where I wanted
[00:04:10] not be stuck in an office.
[00:04:12] Four, sharing of ideas.
[00:04:15] I love to share and develop ideas with other people.
[00:04:18] Five, laughter.
[00:04:20] I wanted a job that was fun,
[00:04:22] nothing too serious and uptight.
[00:04:24] And six, grand goals.
[00:04:27] I wanted a job that had almost infinite possibility
[00:04:30] to be continued.
