[00:01:23] That's episode 1288.
[00:01:25] But if you're all caught up, let's hear the rest of Carl's thoughts about fixing your career as we optimize your life.
[00:01:35] When your career sucks, you can fix it.
[00:01:37] Part 2 by Carl Stabe of digtofly.com
[00:01:42] I realized that there wasn't one job out there that was able to satisfy my needs.
[00:01:47] I am building on my career to get where I want to go.
[00:01:50] I looked at my list and tried to figure out what niche would best fit my talents.
[00:01:55] I pictured myself in a whole mess of careers, advertising,
[00:01:58] copywriter, freelancer, massage therapist, chiropractor, poet, school counselor,
[00:02:04] artist, teacher, and novelist.
[00:02:07] None of them seemed practical and a solid fit for me.
[00:02:10] I knew that I wanted to write but wasn't sure what niche.
[00:02:13] I also knew that I wanted to speak and engage the public.
[00:02:16] The more that I kept coming back to my desires, my career came into focus.
[00:02:20] That's why I started Work Happy Now, my fifth blog.
[00:02:24] It fit with my degree, business and marketing, my passions, writing and public speaking.
[00:02:29] And it also satisfied the most crucial need for me, the ability to be creative.
[00:02:34] Practicing this work on the side makes my day job easier to go to each morning.
[00:02:38] I know that I'm building toward a greater goal.
[00:02:41] Building your skills
[00:02:43] I'm currently working for a company but I'm also gaining valuable experience
[00:02:47] to build on my career foundation.
[00:02:49] I speak to various schools about financial literacy, that's public speaking.
[00:02:53] I create PR for my company, that's refining my business writing.
[00:02:57] And I get to design brochures and web banners for the website, that's creative.
[00:03:02] When you can find ways to increase your skills at your present job,
[00:03:05] then it will become more enjoyable.
[00:03:07] You must create opportunity to help see greater possibility.
[00:03:11] That may mean doing work outside of your job details, but that's how you get ahead.
[00:03:15] Try building on your career foundation by doing the following.
[00:03:19] 1. Asking a coworker if they need help on a project.
[00:03:22] 2. Asking your boss's advice on a report.
[00:03:25] 3. Asking your boss for a specific project that interests you.
[00:03:29] Or 4. Develop a project that you think will help the company
[00:03:34] and when it's got some substance, pitch it to your boss.
[00:03:37] You have to create opportunities.
[00:03:40] 4. Pride plus passion equals success.
[00:03:43] Being good at a job takes pride.
[00:03:46] We have to care about the outcome or we are never going to double check our reports
[00:03:50] or follow up with that annoying customer.
[00:03:52] It's harder to care about work that is monotonous.
[00:03:55] If you can't find a reason to care about the outcome of your work,
[00:03:58] then it's up to you to take control and find out what you really need to feel successful.
[00:04:02] You have to ask yourself why you either lost or never had pride in your job.
[00:04:07] If it's fear, then it's your fault.
[00:04:09] If you are bored, then it's also your fault.
[00:04:12] I'm going to be honest, you are the reason that you are in this position.
[00:04:15] It's really up to you to release that fear and do what gives you the best odds to be happy.
[00:04:20] Find a career that fulfills your dreams.
[00:04:23] Look at your list of emotional needs and find a theme that emerges.
[00:04:28] Every list has a theme and yours will help lead you to the career that will build energy
[00:04:33] instead of sucking it away from you.
[00:04:35] Down deep, you probably have some idea of your dream job.
[00:04:38] It's your fear that keeps you from pursuing this career.
[00:04:41] The easiest way to release this fear is to imagine yourself doing what you love.
[00:04:45] Allow yourself to feel these emotions, let them build passion.
[00:04:50] Visualization is a great technique to build motivation,
[00:04:53] but you must also act on these feelings to encourage change.
[00:04:57] If you want to change career paths, then start taking little steps toward that goal.
[00:05:02] Talk to people who have a similar career and find out how they created their path.
[00:05:06] Go to night school, create a website, join a club or join a network online.
[00:05:12] Every time you add new tools to your skill set, your fear will likely regress.
[00:05:16] Start small and keep on taking baby steps.
[00:05:19] If you only have a general idea of what you would love to do, then create a list of steps to accomplish.
[00:05:25] As you mark off your progress, your confidence will grow and the apprehension will wither away.
[00:05:30] Before you even reach your dream career, you'll be enjoying the foundation that will make it happen.
[00:05:34] That's what it means to work happy now.
[00:05:37] You have to appease the present you to keep yourself motivated to improve your career.
[00:05:42] So go take a baby step and surround yourself in an environment that will make you happy.
[00:05:46] If you like to organize, then join a club and make contacts.
[00:05:50] If you love writing, then create a blog.
[00:05:52] If you like sports, then volunteer at your local college
[00:05:55] and start making contacts that will help you develop this passion.
[00:05:58] Your skills will take time to build, but I promise if you stick with it, you'll see progress.
[00:06:04] You'll slowly add new friends in the industry.
[00:06:07] These new friends may one day help you find a job that will make your dream career a reality.
[00:06:12] Now go get started and add a new skill to your foundation and see what happens.
