Episode 1292:

In Carl Pullein's thought-provoking article, he challenges the conventional quest for work-life balance by suggesting it stems from not loving what you do. Pullein argues that true success and fulfillment come from immersing oneself in work driven by passion and commitment, as exemplified by highly successful figures like Tony Robbins and Elon Musk. He encourages finding joy in one's vocation, blurring the lines between work and pleasure, and ultimately living a life fueled by passion.

Quotes to ponder:

"If you worry about work-life balance you are not going to achieve the same levels of success as people like Tony Robbins, Elon Musk, Gary Vaynerchuk or Sheryl Sandberg."

"When you have a clear idea of what you enjoy doing, when your work is something you love doing, there is no dividing line between work and pleasure."

"The secret to a happy and fulfilled life is not really a secret. It is as Steve Jobs said in his famous Stanford University Commencement address in 2005; finding what you love."

[00:00:50] This is Optimal Work Daily episode 1292. Why worrying about work-life balance is not a good

[00:00:59] sign by Carl Palin of CarlPalin.com and hey there I am Dan and I am with you every single day

[00:01:06] of the week and that includes weekends like today as well as holidays and what we do here

[00:01:11] is I read to you from these great blogs that we find and get the author's permission to

[00:01:15] share and they're all about work and entrepreneurship and all sorts of related topics like work-life

[00:01:21] balance which is what Carl's talking about today. So let's get right to it and start

[00:01:25] optimizing your life. Why worrying about work-life balance is not a good sign by Carl

[00:01:35] Palin of CarlPalin.com. I see so many articles these days talking about creating the perfect

[00:01:42] work-life balance that somehow the goal is to have eight hours sleep, eight hours work

[00:01:47] and eight hours leisure time every 24 hours. In many ways this does seem ideal yet in reality

[00:01:54] it's a very bad sign. It implies that the work you do is not something you enjoy or

[00:01:58] love but is something you do to live. That you work 40 hours a week so you can enjoy

[00:02:04] yourself on a weekend where what you actually do is spend most of that time sitting in

[00:02:08] front of the TV or a laying in bed complaining how tired you are. What is really happening

[00:02:13] is out of a seven-day week you spend five of those days doing something you hate so you

[00:02:18] can enjoy two days where you are not working yet you complain about being so exhausted

[00:02:23] all you do during those two days is sit around doing nothing but complain. If you

[00:02:27] worry about work-life balance you're not going to achieve the same levels of success

[00:02:31] as people like Tony Robbins, Elon Musk, Gary Vaynerchuk or Sheryl Sandberg. Very

[00:02:37] successful people focus on what they want and the process not the hours they work or

[00:02:42] about how tired they are. If you look at the lives of the super successful you see a

[00:02:47] completely different pattern emerge you see people who can't wait to jump out

[00:02:50] of bed in the morning you see people who may not be in the office at weekends

[00:02:54] but are reading learning and planning so they can do their work better and

[00:02:59] perform at a much higher level. Their goal is excellence and they have a

[00:03:03] purpose. I am certainly not suggesting that everyone should forget about

[00:03:07] trying to have free time or some quality time with their families and loved ones

[00:03:10] but if you want to build a multi-billion dollar business then worrying about your

[00:03:15] work-life balance is going to stop you from achieving that dream. The funny

[00:03:19] thing is the people who are working to improve their lives that read study

[00:03:23] and plan on weekends are the happiest people around. Those that go around

[00:03:27] trying to create a quote-unquote perfect work-life balance are often

[00:03:31] miserable, exhausted and stressed. Why is that? It really comes down to purpose

[00:03:37] when you have a clear idea of what you enjoy doing when your work is

[00:03:41] something you love doing there is no dividing line between work and pleasure

[00:03:45] everything you do is a pleasure then the challenge becomes fighting time to

[00:03:49] spend with your family and friends and although that can be a very difficult

[00:03:52] challenge to overcome it is a better place to be than laying around all

[00:03:56] weekend complaining about how tired you are and then suffering from the

[00:04:00] Sunday night blues you might be spending time with your family and

[00:04:03] friends but is sitting around on a sofa with your eyes glued to a screen

[00:04:07] spending quality time with your family and friends I don't think so this

[00:04:11] year I've spent a lot of time studying highly successful people trying to find

[00:04:15] if there was anything these people had in common there are a lot of both

[00:04:19] commonalities and differences but one thing I did find they all had in

[00:04:23] common was the passion and commitment they had for their work right

[00:04:26] back to the time of Leonardo da Vinci all highly successful people lived

[00:04:31] and breathe their work when they got tired they slept when they were awake

[00:04:35] it was all about work that was true then and it's true now we read articles

[00:04:40] about the number of hours Elon Musk spends working how many hours people

[00:04:44] like Tim Cook Sadiana Della Marissa Meyer and Cheryl Sandberg spend

[00:04:49] working they all work 10 to 15 hours a day and on weekends too

[00:04:53] none of them complains about not having a work life balance work is their

[00:04:57] life that is the balance what I have found interesting is those people stuck

[00:05:02] at the bottom or in the middle not moving up the promotion ladder moving

[00:05:05] from one job to another and not being able to find happiness are the

[00:05:09] loudest proponents of a work life balance it is as if their

[00:05:12] life's work is to complain about how hard their work is how tired

[00:05:16] and stressed they are and how unhappy they are in their work instead

[00:05:20] of harnessing that energy finding a vocation they really enjoy and

[00:05:23] love doing they seem to prefer complaining about it of course it

[00:05:27] is their right to complain about how hard their work is but I do

[00:05:30] feel their energies would be better served finding something they

[00:05:33] truly love doing and finding happiness rather than complaining

[00:05:37] the secret to a happy and fulfilled life is not really a secret

[00:05:40] it is as Steve Jobs said in his famous Stanford University

[00:05:44] commencement address in 2005 finding what you love

[00:05:47] doing is hard and this is probably the reason why so many people

[00:05:51] give up and just settle for a job they hate going to and returning

[00:05:55] home after an eight or nine hour day to complain about how much of

[00:05:58] a bad day they had surely it would be a far better use of

[00:06:01] your energies to find something you really enjoy doing

[00:06:04] instead of complaining about the work that you hate doing

[00:06:07] take some time every evening and at weekends to play

[00:06:10] to read to learn and to continue searching for a vocation

[00:06:15] that pours energy into your life that has you jumping out of bed on a Monday

[00:06:18] morning with excitement not dread and that has you using your

[00:06:22] weekends to learn to grow and to become a better you it's hard but

[00:06:27] it is not impossible the effort finding that place will be worth it

[00:06:31] you will be able to say goodbye to complaining to negativity

[00:06:34] and to feeling tired and stressed instead you will have huge

[00:06:38] amounts of energy positivity and excitement for each day

[00:06:42] now go find what you love
