[00:00:57] How do you want to feel in your career?

[00:01:00] By Carl Staib of digtofly.com

[00:01:03] And I am your narrator, my name is Dan and I'm with you every single day reading from the very best blogs that cover work, productivity, entrepreneurship and all sorts of related topics.

[00:01:12] So let's get to it now as we hear from Carl and optimize your life.

[00:01:21] How do you want to feel in your career?

[00:01:23] By Carl Staib of digtofly.com

[00:01:27] You deserve happiness.

[00:01:29] You deserve to get excited about your career.

[00:01:31] But most people are unhappy in their current career.

[00:01:34] And over 80% of people are currently looking for a new job.

[00:01:38] I was unhappy for the last four years at one of my jobs.

[00:01:42] Four years!

[00:01:43] The first year was fun, then the next two years were just okay.

[00:01:47] Then I just stopped trying after the third year.

[00:01:50] I coasted for the last four years, really disliking most of my time there.

[00:01:54] I would go into different co-workers' offices and just chat for 30 minutes at a time.

[00:01:59] I didn't see the point of working hard.

[00:02:01] Other people would literally take naps at their desk.

[00:02:04] It was such a toxic environment.

[00:02:06] Instead of looking at what would make me happy, I compared my situation to the people that I was surrounded by.

[00:02:12] Big mistake.

[00:02:13] I stopped looking at how I wanted to feel at the end of the day and work toward those feelings.

[00:02:18] I stopped trying to make myself feel energized and took the easy way out.

[00:02:22] So how do you currently feel when you're working?

[00:02:25] Tired? Bored? Relaxed? Challenged? Excited?

[00:02:30] If the first feeling or memory that pops in your mind when you answer that question is negative,

[00:02:35] then your career isn't adding to your happiness.

[00:02:38] Your passion for work dictates your success.

[00:02:41] If all you're doing is working for money, then your actions will reflect your results.

[00:02:45] Money doesn't buy happiness.

[00:02:47] It's only a tool.

[00:02:48] Once you choose work by how you feel and not for just the external reward,

[00:02:52] then you will develop a career that takes you to great places physically and emotionally.

[00:02:57] Now of course we must connect to the external world in some way.

[00:03:00] We can't work in a bubble.

[00:03:02] You can't expect to create a project that you would love to work on

[00:03:05] and your boss will love it and give you carte blanche to do whatever and however you want.

[00:03:10] You can't expect to be able to write a novel

[00:03:12] and then have a publisher waltz into your house, print it out, read it, love it,

[00:03:16] and publish it to global honors.

[00:03:19] You have to find that sweet spot.

[00:03:21] As we talked about earlier, there's work involved.

[00:03:24] That's where your why behind your actions, focus, and strengths come in.

[00:03:29] You focus on what will get you the best results and do work that delivers great results.

[00:03:34] How do you want to feel while you work?

[00:03:37] Write down how you want to feel.

[00:03:39] Happy, proud, excited, challenged, joyful, etc.

[00:03:44] Think of your top five.

[00:03:46] Your desires create your life.

[00:03:48] When you have a better understanding of how you want to feel while you work,

[00:03:51] then you can begin to deconstruct your desires and create a career plan to get there.

[00:03:56] This is where knowing yourself is so important.

[00:03:58] The best place to start is looking at how you want to feel as you do your work

[00:04:02] and how you want to feel at the end of each day.

[00:04:05] Here are some examples with concrete emotions of how you might want to feel.

[00:04:08] I want to get excited about the people I work with.

[00:04:11] I want to feel energized by the people I'm able to help.

[00:04:14] I want to be curious about my challenges instead of feeling tired by them.

[00:04:19] See how this works?

[00:04:20] These are positive emotions, excited, energized, challenged.

[00:04:25] Now that you know how you want to feel,

[00:04:27] you can take the next step and deconstruct how you are able to make these feelings a reality in your career.

[00:04:32] Visualizing what actions will help you feel happier.

[00:04:36] For example, if writing makes you feel energized,

[00:04:39] then how do you think you could incorporate more writing into your career?

[00:04:42] Could you write your company's newsletter?

[00:04:44] Could you create your own project that would help the company

[00:04:47] and create a role that requires you to write more?

[00:04:50] Could you create a side project to help you connect with other writers?

[00:04:53] Which one excites you the most?

[00:04:55] Write down five small projects you could create at work

[00:04:58] to help you tap into each of the feelings that you thought of before.

[00:05:02] When you know how you want to feel,

[00:05:04] then you can look at what actions make you feel this way.

[00:05:06] Then it's developing a plan that you can act on to make these feelings occur on a daily basis.

[00:05:11] So what actions cause these feelings, and how can you make them happen?

[00:05:15] You just listened to the post titled

[00:05:21] How do you want to feel in your career?

[00:05:25] We're driven by the search for better.

[00:07:04] Carl helps entrepreneurs understand their struggles and turn them into stepping stones.

[00:07:09] In 2010, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer

[00:07:12] and then was laid off from his job in 2011.

[00:07:15] And those were of course difficult situations, but today he calls them blessings in disguise.

[00:07:20] Because since then, Carl has stopped doing work that doesn't fit with his passions

[00:07:23] and instead now focuses on things he truly cares about.

[00:07:27] He's the author of the book Bring Gratitude and has a lot to offer on his site,

[00:07:31] so come on and check it out at digtofly.com.

[00:07:34] And I do have that linked in this episode's description.

[00:07:37] And Dig to Fly is short for Dig Deep to Fly High.

[00:07:40] There's also a podcast.
