[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_00]: The Skillful Art of Salary Negotiation by Lisa H. with Dig to Fly dot com.
[00:00:35] [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm your narrator Dan and I'm with you every single day reading from these great blogs that
[00:00:39] [SPEAKER_00]: cover work, business, entrepreneurship and all sorts of related topics.
[00:00:44] [SPEAKER_00]: So right now I'm going to jump into our post from Lisa and optimize your life.
[00:00:52] [SPEAKER_00]: The Skillful Art of Salary Negotiation by Lisa H. with Dig to Fly dot com.
[00:00:59] [SPEAKER_00]: About three and a half years ago, I was in the awkward position of having to negotiate my salary for the position I currently hold.
[00:01:05] [SPEAKER_00]: I say awkward because salary negotiation is often the most sensitive issue in the whole hiring process.
[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_00]: As I have gotten older, I've become more comfortable discussing what my skills are worth, but I'm not yet where I want to be.
[00:01:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Discussing compensation can be uncomfortable for both the employee and the employer.
[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_00]: You, the employee, are trying to get the highest salary you can for your skills.
[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_00]: While your employer is working with a specific budget.
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_00]: However, with a little preparation you can make the process of negotiating your salary more comfortable.
[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_00]: One, know your skills.
[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_00]: First you must know exactly what your skills are.
[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Not kind of what they are. Exactly.
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_00]: After all, it is your skills that your future employer will be paying for.
[00:01:47] [SPEAKER_00]: If you've been in the workplace for a long time, it may be helpful to write them down so that you don't miss any.
[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_00]: And yes, include those skills that are considered obsolete.
[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_00]: You may choose not to put your obsolete skills on your resume, but you should have them in the forefront of your mind in an interview.
[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_00]: You see, if you know exactly what all of your skills are, you will be in a better position to negotiate your salary.
[00:02:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Consider this. The skills you have that match the job description may get you to the interview.
[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_00]: However, the skills that you have outside of those listed in the job profile may get you the job.
[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Two, know your proficiency levels.
[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_00]: How proficient are you in each of your skills?
[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't mean how proficient you think you are. We tend to inflate our ratings.
[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_00]: But how proficient does the industry think you are?
[00:02:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Go to a website like salary.com and look up the job title of the position you wish to hold.
[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Usually, the titles are distinguished by proficiency level.
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_00]: For example, Technical Writer Level 1, Technical Writer Level 2, etc.
[00:02:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Then look at your list of skills.
[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_00]: If there's a skill on your paper that matches a skill in one of the job descriptions,
[00:02:50] [SPEAKER_00]: then write the proficiency level next to it.
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Continue to do this until you have gone through all of your skills.
[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Some of your skills may not have a proficiency level written next to them
[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_00]: because they do not fit into the description of the job duties, and that's okay.
[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_00]: This should give you a good idea of how the industry ranks your proficiency.
[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_00]: If there are skills listed on the job description that you do not have,
[00:03:11] [SPEAKER_00]: consider acquiring those skills before leaving your current job or changing your proficiency level.
[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_00]: The point of this is so that you don't go into an interview with Level 1 experience
[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_00]: and try to negotiate for a Level 4 salary.
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_00]: 3. Do your research.
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Do your research. I can't stress this one enough.
[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Use resources like salary.com to find out how much your type of job currently pays.
[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Take your job title, level of experience, and geographic location into consideration.
[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Some parts of the country, like the Northeast, pay higher salaries than others.
[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Avoid basing your desired salary on your current salary.
[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Consider this. Not only might you be currently under or overpaid,
[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_00]: but your current salary may include inflationary raises, bonuses, or other awards you may have received.
[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_00]: However, it is acceptable to extend your range to approximately $6,000.
[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_00]: This shows that you're willing to work within the company's price range
[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_00]: but are interested in more compensation.
[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Once you've determined your salary range, deduct 30% from it for taxes to determine your net salary.
[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Use this figure to decide whether you will make enough to cover your expenses and save some.
[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_00]: If you find that you would not make enough, you may opt for a different job.
[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_00]: 4. Evaluate other currency.
[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Too often people go into an interview solely focused on the money part of the negotiation.
[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Remember, there are many more aspects to consider before accepting a position.
[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Take the commute, for example. It might take you 45 minutes to get to that 1 o'clock interview on Friday afternoon,
[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_00]: but what is that commute going to look like on Monday morning at 7?
[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Take the time to consider everything that will be involved in taking on that job.
[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_00]: What do the health insurance plans look like? Will you receive tuition reimbursement?
[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_00]: How much time off will you get, and does the company have a retirement plan?
[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Depending on your needs, you may opt for a lower salary in favor of a benefits package that suits your needs perfectly.
[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_00]: 5. Be magnificent in the interview.
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_00]: The best way to become a skilled interviewee is to practice, practice, and practice.
[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Search the internet for sample interview questions and craft answers to them.
[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Do mock interviews with your family and friends.
[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Preparation is key. If the job calls for skills that you're lacking,
[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_00]: make sure that you have examples of how you are able to overcome challenges in the past.
[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Asking questions during the interview also shows your interest.
[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_00]: 6. Determine whether the job is a good fit for you.
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Both you and your potential employer stand to benefit from the dialogue,
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_00]: and you should see it as such. Understanding your needs and those of the company
[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_00]: will help you come to an agreement. However, if an agreement is not possible,
[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_00]: thank the interviewer and leave on a good note. Remember, the interview is also a time to see if the company is a good fit for you.
[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_00]: 7. Know when the negotiation is over.
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Pay attention for subtle and not so subtle verbal and physical cues that the negotiation is over.
[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_00]: When it is over, avoid pushing points of contention any further.
[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_00]: This could make the negotiation awkward and leave a negative first impression on your part.
[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Be positive and avoid taking criticism personally.
[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_00]: You are now in a position to either take or leave the offer.
[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Remember, the interview is only the first step in negotiating your salary.
[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Once you are hired, offer your skills to the company and prove you are worth above and beyond what you are being paid.
[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Note from Carl, the owner of Dig2Fly.
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't like to think of negotiating as painful because it can actually be an exhilarating experience.
[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_00]: It's two people who have needs and finding a way to meet in the middle to help both sides succeed.
[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_00]: If you go into the meeting dreading the moment, it will hold you back from making smart decisions.
[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Try to think of the negotiation as a chance to improve your superpowers of communication.
[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_00]: When you see it as a growing experience, you'll find ways to enjoy the moment
[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_00]: and more likely negotiate a higher salary.

[00:08:33] [SPEAKER_00]: he calls them blessings in disguise because since then,
[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_00]: he stopped doing work that doesn't fit with his passions
