[00:01:08] When I was 20 years old and enrolled in a graduate school program that I didn't finish,

[00:01:13] I took a third shift job working at the FedEx Package Processing Center in Memphis from 10pm to 2am four days a week.

[00:01:20] It was tiring work and the worst thing about it was getting home close to 3am and having to go to class at 9.

[00:01:26] A schedule like that can work for a few days, but not for the few months I tried to sustain it.

[00:01:31] Carrying boxes for FedEx ten years ago was the last job I ever had.

[00:01:35] In between going to school and then working the night shift, I realized I needed some more money.

[00:01:40] eBay was just getting popular at the time and in those early days it was a seller's market.

[00:01:44] You could put pretty much anything up for sale and you had a good chance of selling it for more than it was worth.

[00:01:49] Buyers were hooked on the new format, so much so that many of them weren't very price conscious.

[00:01:54] If you were a seller and didn't really know what you were doing, like me, this was a good thing.

[00:01:59] The Beginning

[00:02:00] In my quest to buy groceries, one day I took a bunch of pictures of random stuff I had lying around my apartment.

[00:02:06] The stuff consisted mostly of video games, CDs and old clothes that I would never wear.

[00:02:11] I had a $40 35mm camera that you actually had to buy film for and then pay for developing.

[00:02:16] No picture preview, no instant gratification, 24 hour wait for processing.

[00:02:21] The whole old school way of taking pictures.

[00:02:24] Anyway, I took a bunch of terrible photos and since I had no idea how to upload them online,

[00:02:28] as eBay wasn't so user-friendly in the early days, I sent them to my 15 year old brother in Montana,

[00:02:34] who helped me put them up on a free website that he hosted.

[00:02:37] The pictures were bad, the auction design was bad and the auction description was only decent.

[00:02:41] It was incredibly, laughably amateurish.

[00:02:44] But when I checked the results five days later, I found out I had made about $200 or roughly $24 an hour for my time.

[00:02:51] Hmm.

[00:02:52] I could bust my butt lugging boxes around on the third shift, or I could work when I wanted,

[00:02:57] find stuff to sell and make a lot more money.

[00:02:59] It wasn't a hard choice.

[00:03:01] After I saw that I could replicate those results, I was hooked.

[00:03:04] I never went back to FedEx, but I kept working the night shift,

[00:03:07] this time listing auctions and preparing boxes for shipment the next day.

[00:03:11] I sold Lego toy sets, phone cards, cigars, coffee and anything else I could find.

[00:03:16] One of my favorite tricks was to buy things on eBay and then resell them using better written auctions and photos.

[00:03:23] Doing this with laptops and electronic gear, I found I could usually earn a 20% profit in a week.

[00:03:28] Pretty soon I was making $2,000 a month for part-time work,

[00:03:31] which at 20 years old was more money than I had ever made.

[00:03:34] A few months later, I jumped to $4,000 a month and then $5,000.

[00:03:38] The business continued to grow and I peaked out around $8,000 a month about a year later.

[00:03:43] I did everything myself, ran the business with utmost inefficiency, but I was able to support myself well.

[00:03:49] One of the most important skills an entrepreneur can have is the ability to predict change and act on it.

[00:03:55] I've made hundreds of mistakes and missed a lot of opportunities,

[00:03:58] but one that I got right was leaving the eBay selling business in my second year of operation.

[00:04:03] As more and more buyers came to eBay, more and more sellers came too.

[00:04:07] The competition for everything I was selling rapidly increased

[00:04:10] and I found that the market was becoming more and more efficient.

[00:04:13] Whenever I found a source for a new product,

[00:04:15] someone else would find the same source within a month.

[00:04:18] Then there would be two of us selling the same thing,

[00:04:20] and then five or ten of us.

[00:04:22] Competition reduces profit and I didn't want to compete for the lowest bidder.

[00:04:26] One week eBay canceled all of my auctions due to an error in the listing.

[00:04:30] They refunded my listing fees and later allowed me to relist everything,

[00:04:34] but in the meantime I had lost more than $3,000 that I could never get back.

[00:04:37] At the time, $3,000 was an enormous amount of money to me.

[00:04:41] I decided that I needed a new business,

[00:04:43] so I made plans to say goodbye to full-time eBay selling.

[00:04:47] I used the skills I acquired from importing coffee to move to other micro-businesses,

[00:04:52] all of which I did for a year or two at a time for the next five years.

[00:04:56] Search engine optimization or SEO, website design, affiliate marketing,

[00:05:00] joint venture brokering, etc.

[00:05:02] For one year I focused on playing jazz music, using the afternoons to practice,

[00:05:06] and the evenings to play gigs wherever I could.

[00:05:09] I did business work for two to three hours every morning to pay the bills,

[00:05:13] since life as a musician doesn't usually pay very well.

[00:05:16] And now, looking back,

[00:05:18] those early days of importing coffee and selling Legos

[00:05:20] served as the foundation for my belief in self-employment

[00:05:23] as a critical part of living the life I wanted.

[00:05:26] It essentially allowed me to skip out on a whole series of junior work positions

[00:05:30] that most normal people go through.

[00:05:32] I never had a nine-to-five, 40-hour-a-week job.

[00:05:34] I never had a cubicle.

[00:05:36] And after the short-lived midnight FedEx experience, I never really had a job either.

[00:05:40] In 2002, Jolie and I moved to West Africa.

[00:05:44] My entire life focus changed to serving on the leadership team for a charity that worked in postwar countries.

[00:05:49] I never took a salary for any of that work and used my business income,

[00:05:54] along with donations from supporters, to provide for our four years in Africa.

[00:05:57] Now that I'm living back in the US for a while,

[00:06:00] I still shop on eBay and even sell things there once in a while.

[00:06:03] But I only sell things I no longer need and don't sell to earn a profit.

[00:06:07] I do remain grateful to eBay for helping me learn how to run a small business, though.

[00:06:11] Without them, I would have been stuck moving boxes at FedEx for the rest of the year,

[00:06:14] and who knows how the lack of a real income would have affected my future ability to work for myself.

[00:06:20] Ten years later, I still think about those early days of learning to work on my own.

[00:06:24] Whenever I have to carry heavy boxes around, which isn't very often these days,

[00:06:28] I remember the old warehouse days with nostalgia and gratefulness that I don't have to do that anymore.
