[00:00:40] How much is a customer willing to pay for a product or service?
[00:00:44] You might think that the most obvious way to find out would be to simply ask the customer. After all, your customers dictate the market price, right?
[00:00:51] It may sound counterintuitive, but basing your prices strictly on customer input is probably one of the worst ways to price your products and services.
[00:01:00] I'll use buying shoes as an example. If Kenneth Cole came up to me and asked me how much I would be willing to pay for his latest shoe design, I'd probably say 50 bucks.
[00:01:10] I'm cheap when it comes to shoes. After all, at the very basic level, it's just a pair of shoes, right?
[00:01:16] But if the shoes were guaranteed to increase my height by two inches, I would probably be inclined to pay a little more.
[00:01:22] That unique value proposition example illustrates that it is much more effective to sell solutions and not products.
[00:01:29] I don't need a new pair of shoes, but I wouldn't mind appearing a little taller.
[00:01:33] If something you are selling provides a unique benefit or saves a customer hundreds of dollars' worth of time by increasing productivity, then your prices should reflect these savings.
[00:01:43] Another common mistake is to base your prices solely on the cost of materials.
[00:01:48] When my wife and I first launched our store, we priced our products based on a 4x multiple of our cost of goods, which seemed to be an excellent margin.
[00:01:55] But then we realized that customers were willing to pay much more because we were providing a priceless keepsake for their wedding day.
[00:02:02] Do not base your prices solely on the cost of materials.
[00:02:06] Your job as a small business owner is to try to find out what problem the customer is trying to solve and charge them a premium for goods and services that reflect the true value of your business.
[00:02:16] This post will provide you with some unique value proposition examples to command premium pricing for your small business.
[00:02:22] What is a unique value proposition?
[00:02:25] If your business blends in with the competition, your only leverage will be to reduce prices, which will erode your top line.
[00:02:32] Even if you sell commodity items, you need to differentiate yourself from the competition in order to command premium pricing for your products.
[00:02:40] That is why it is absolutely crucial to establish your unique value proposition.
[00:02:45] A unique value proposition is an exclusive or differentiating aspect of your product or service that defines your business.
[00:02:52] It must be a strong statement reflecting your company's ideals that draws a customer to what you have to sell.
[00:02:58] Here are a few examples.
[00:03:00] If you watch college basketball on television, you've probably seen Dick Vitale chomping on DiGiorno pizza during the commercial breaks.
[00:03:07] DiGiorno's unique value proposition is that their pizza tastes as good as delivery pizza, except that it comes from the freezer.
[00:03:13] Their unique selling point always rings in the back of my mind every time I walk down the aisles of my local grocery store.
[00:03:20] In fact, I don't buy any other frozen pizza brands anymore because their pizza is inexpensive and good.
[00:03:26] Another great example is head and shoulders shampoo.
[00:03:28] There are hundreds, if not thousands of shampoos out on the market, but when I have dandruff, only one brand pops into my head that will solve my problem.
[00:03:36] Coming up with your own unique value proposition.
[00:03:40] So, how do you come up with your own unique value proposition?
[00:03:43] Make sure that you structure your USP based on the following criteria.
[00:03:47] Emphasize a particular benefit from using your products.
[00:03:50] In the head and shoulders example, their shampoo solves the dandruff problem.
[00:03:54] Find something unique to say about your business.
[00:03:57] Do you carry the largest variety of a certain product in the area?
[00:04:01] Do you sell hard to find products?
[00:04:03] Can you do something that no one else can do?
[00:04:05] Make sure your USP paints a mental picture.
[00:04:08] For example, KFC sells chicken that is finger licking good.
[00:04:12] Creates an excellent mental image.
[00:04:14] Here are some good examples of unique value propositions that have already been ingrained in my head.
[00:04:19] Note, a unique value proposition is not a slogan or a tagline.
[00:04:23] It just so happens that these slogans represent the value propositions of their companies very effectively.
[00:04:30] Advil, advanced medicine for pain.
[00:04:32] Bounty, the quicker picker-upper.
[00:04:34] BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
[00:04:37] And FedEx, your package on time, guaranteed.
[00:04:40] Make sure your unique value proposition paints a picture.
[00:04:44] For example,
[00:04:45] Quote, quality electronics at low prices, end quote,
[00:04:49] is not a good USP because it sounds generic, doesn't solve any problems, and doesn't paint a mental picture of the business.
[00:04:56] Here are some pointers on how to come up with the USP.
[00:04:59] First, focus on what problem you're trying to solve for your customer.
[00:05:03] Customers don't give a d*** about features or bells or whistles.
[00:05:06] They have a problem that needs to be solved and you are the only one that can solve it.
[00:05:11] Number two, take a look at your competitors and find characteristics of your business that differ from the rest.
[00:05:16] First, if you can't find anything unique about your business, then you should probably find another market to pursue.
[00:05:22] And three, look at your business from the point of view of a customer.
[00:05:25] If you were in the market for your goods, then what would you look for?
[00:05:29] What aspect of the business would compel you to purchase from them?
[00:05:33] After you've jotted down some notes, try to formulate a sentence or two that summarizes it all.
[00:05:38] Make sure it paints some sort of picture in your mind.
[00:05:40] For our line of wedding handkerchiefs, our slogan is,
[00:05:43] Personalized Keepsakes to Dry Your Tears of Joy.
[00:05:46] It's simple, catchy, and captures the joy and happiness of a bride on her wedding day.
[00:05:51] Our value proposition is that we carry the largest selection of wedding handkerchiefs on the internet,
[00:05:56] we offer fast turnaround times on personalized goods,
[00:05:59] and we will make sure our goods arrive to your wedding or special event on time.
[00:06:05] Demanding Top Dollar
[00:06:07] Once your unique value proposition is ingrained in the minds of customers,
[00:06:11] you'll be in the position to demand higher prices.
[00:06:14] One of the biggest problems a small business faces is what I call pricing inertia.
[00:06:18] You've sold a product for years at a certain price.
[00:06:21] You're making a good profit and you're satisfied with your cash flow.
[00:06:24] Why should you raise your prices?
[00:06:26] This question can best be answered with another question.
[00:06:29] Why be satisfied with a good profit when you could be making an astronomical profit?
[00:06:33] The fact is that if you don't know what problem your customer is trying to solve
[00:06:37] and what he or she is willing to pay,
[00:06:39] you could be leaving a lot of money on the table at the end of the day.
[00:06:42] For example, when I first launched my course on how to create a profitable online store,
[00:06:47] I only charged $299.
[00:06:49] But then a funny thing happened.
[00:06:50] Every time I raised the price, I would attract more and more customers,
[00:06:54] and the quality of my students went up as well.
[00:06:57] Clearly, I had priced my course too low in the beginning
[00:06:59] because the value I was providing was many times greater.
[00:07:02] Take a moment to think about the value you are providing before you decide on a price.
[00:07:06] More often than not, you are probably undervaluing your products.
