[00:01:02] The Mike Tyson's Punch Out Guide to becoming quasi-famous and inspiring others by Steve
[00:01:07] Kam of NerdFitness.com and I'm Dr. Neal Malik reading you some of the most popular health
[00:01:12] and fitness blogs out there with permission from the websites, of course.
[00:01:16] Now before we get to the post, I have to admit, as a kid, one of my favorite video games ever
[00:01:23] was the very same one that Steve is going to discuss on this episode.
[00:01:26] Mike Tyson's Punch Out, I was obsessed with it.
[00:01:29] And so it's a real pleasure to be able to read this to you.
[00:01:32] So with that, let's get right to it as we optimize your life.
[00:01:40] The Mike Tyson's Punch Out Guide to becoming quasi-famous and inspiring others by Steve Kam
[00:01:46] of NerdFitness.com.
[00:01:49] Please tell me you've played Mike Tyson's Punch Out for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
[00:01:54] If you have, then you'll understand when I say that it's one of the games that defined my childhood.
[00:01:59] I can't count the dozens and dozens of hours I spent working my way through the different circuits,
[00:02:05] beating the f*** out of glass Joe, trying to dodge Bald Bull's Charge
[00:02:10] and watching an aw as Iron Mike Tyson knocked me out with a single punch.
[00:02:15] Sure, it's a fun game, easy to play, and almost impossible to master.
[00:02:20] But there's one reason above all others that this game really resonated with me.
[00:02:25] It's a good underdog story.
[00:02:28] Little Mac, the main character in Punch Out, is to loosely quote the movie Rudy,
[00:02:33] which is another great underdog story, is 5 foot nothing, 100 and nothing,
[00:02:39] and is hardly a speck of athletic ability.
[00:02:41] Sure he's not the biggest guy, definitely not the most talented,
[00:02:45] and he trains by running the streets of New York City in a pink jumpsuit, come on.
[00:02:49] However, whatever little Mac lacks an ability and talent,
[00:02:53] he sure makes up for with intelligence, determination, and heart.
[00:02:58] Intelligence to defeat more talented fighters by outsmarting them.
[00:03:02] Determination to get up after being knocked down.
[00:03:06] Heart to truly believe he could go from a nobody to heavyweight champion of the world
[00:03:11] with enough hard work.
[00:03:12] There's just something awesome about a simple dude from humble beginnings
[00:03:16] who go on to accomplish greatness, especially a guy that most of us nerds can relate to.
[00:03:21] Yup, I feel so strongly about this that I ended the previous sentence with a preposition.
[00:03:27] That's how I roll.
[00:03:28] But enough about grammar.
[00:03:30] Let's move on to the real reason I wrote today's article.
[00:03:33] I want you to be the next great underdog success story.
[00:03:37] I want you to be the next big thing because I truly believe you can turn your life around
[00:03:42] and inspire others.
[00:03:44] The weight problem in the US continues to go in the wrong direction.
[00:03:48] So it's up to us to reverse the mojo one person at a time.
[00:03:53] Whether you become an inspiration for just your circle of friends,
[00:03:56] your coworkers, or for hundreds of thousands of people,
[00:04:00] if your story can motivate just one person to make a change and get healthy,
[00:04:05] then you're a hero in my book.
[00:04:07] Here is your step-by-step guide to becoming the next little Mac.
[00:04:12] Step one, decide that you want to make a change.
[00:04:16] This is incredibly important.
[00:04:18] If your head isn't in it for the right reason, you won't succeed.
[00:04:22] Find something that will inspire you to make a change,
[00:04:25] your kids, your family, your partner, whatever.
[00:04:29] Find the motivation you need every single day to level up your life.
[00:04:34] Step two, set specific, obtainable goals.
[00:04:38] Now that your mind is made up,
[00:04:40] it's time for you to start setting your goals for your journey.
[00:04:43] I want to lose weight, isn't going to cut it.
[00:04:47] I want to lose 50 pounds by June is a specific goal that you can get behind.
[00:04:52] Once you've set your goals, you can tailor your diet and work out towards reaching them.
[00:04:57] If you have a goal to lose a certain amount of weight by a certain amount of time,
[00:05:01] break that down into months and weeks so you know if you're on track
[00:05:05] or if you need to make adjustments.
[00:05:08] Step number three,
[00:05:09] weigh in and take a picture.
[00:05:12] You might hate the way you look and hate being in front of a camera,
[00:05:15] but still take a picture of yourself.
[00:05:18] You don't have to show it to anybody or put it up on a website or anything like that.
[00:05:23] Heck, you don't even have to look at it, just hold on to it.
[00:05:26] Secondly, weigh yourself first thing in the morning
[00:05:29] and make a note of what time and what day of the week you do it.
[00:05:33] Step four, tell somebody you're making a change.
[00:05:38] Some people like Tyler at 344pounds.com
[00:05:42] and Steve at 265 and Falling.com
[00:05:46] have made websites to track their diets, workouts and weigh-ins
[00:05:50] to keep themselves accountable.
[00:05:52] If you're interested in starting a website,
[00:05:54] you can launch a free blog at WordPress.com to get the ball rolling.
[00:05:58] Buy an official domain name if you're serious about going global with your story.
[00:06:03] If you don't want to start a website,
[00:06:05] feel free to tell family, friends or coworkers
[00:06:08] that you're getting in shape and that you would love their support.
[00:06:11] These are the people who will keep you accountable
[00:06:14] and keep you motivated.
[00:06:16] Step five, keep your stats on a consistent basis.
[00:06:20] Because you live with yourself every single day, you lucky dog,
[00:06:23] you probably don't realize any changes when you start to look different
[00:06:27] if you're losing weight and exercising.
[00:06:29] So comparing before and after pictures on a monthly or weekly basis
[00:06:34] will really help you see how far you've come.
[00:06:36] Secondly, when dealing with the anonymity of the internet,
[00:06:39] these pictures do wonders for your credibility.
[00:06:43] Step six, ask for help when you need it.
[00:06:46] If you have a blog, write about your struggles.
[00:06:49] If you have friends, tell them what's working and what's not.
[00:06:52] If you're keeping this all to yourself, tell me and I'll do what I can.
[00:06:56] And finally, step seven, inspire others.
[00:07:00] As you start to get in shape,
[00:07:02] you might start to receive emails and comments from friends or strangers
[00:07:05] if online, offering support or asking questions.
[00:07:09] Go out of your way to respond to every single one of them.
[00:07:12] These are the people who you could inspire down the road.
[00:07:16] They say people who are most successful in life
[00:07:18] are often those who are too busy to be looking for it.
[00:07:22] I doubt when Tyler set out to lose 150 pounds,
[00:07:24] he thought his life would change the way it did.
[00:07:27] Initially, he just wanted to lose weight
[00:07:29] and take care of his family.
[00:07:30] Look at him now, sponsorships, TV and radio appearances
[00:07:34] and thousands of lives impacted.
[00:07:37] It's an awesome story and one from which you can learn.
[00:07:41] I firmly believe this next statement, why not you?
[00:07:45] Sounds simple enough, right?
[00:07:47] Why not lose some weight and inspire others to do the same?
[00:07:50] I bet you have some reservations about telling your story
[00:07:53] and putting yourself out there.
[00:07:55] I understand that the internet is a scary place
[00:07:58] and you might not be ready to step into the spotlight.
[00:08:01] That's fine.
[00:08:02] You don't have to plan to end up on television
[00:08:04] selling products on infomercials or anything like that.
[00:08:07] As I've said previously,
[00:08:09] if you manage to only motivate just one other person,
[00:08:12] you're already a hero in my book.
[00:08:14] If you're going to lose weight,
[00:08:16] I think you should document your success and failures
[00:08:18] in case you do have a dramatic transformation.
[00:08:21] In case you're not aware,
[00:08:22] there are hundreds of thousands of people
[00:08:24] in your exact same situation,
[00:08:26] struggling with the same things you're struggling with,
[00:08:29] looking for motivation to succeed.
[00:08:31] I want you to be that person,
[00:08:34] lead by example and those around you
[00:08:36] might just do the same.
[00:08:38] Positive peer pressure and momentum
[00:08:40] are two very powerful influences in healthy living.
[00:08:47] You just listened to the post titled,

[00:09:30] It's only a kick.
[00:09:34] A jump.
[00:09:36] A block.
[00:09:38] It's only a serve.
[00:09:40] It's only a tackle.
[00:09:42] A run.
[00:09:43] It's only for the fans.
[00:09:45] After all, it's only pressure.
[00:09:48] You got this.
[00:09:50] Adidas.
[00:09:52] Dr. Neil here for my commentary.
[00:09:56] So much of what Steve said are things I completely agree with.
[00:10:02] Rather than repeat all of his suggestions,
[00:10:04] I want to highlight one that really jumped out at me.
[00:10:07] Steve said that step one to becoming the next big thing
[00:10:10] is to decide that you want to make a change.
[00:10:13] He said that if your head isn't in it
[00:10:16] for the right reasons, you won't succeed.
[00:10:18] What he means by that is we have to find
[00:10:20] a deep-seated reason to begin this journey.
[00:10:24] If our reason is superficial, like getting a six pack,
[00:10:27] well that may not be enough to keep us motivated.
[00:10:30] Why not?
[00:10:31] Well first getting a six pack can be super frustrating.
[00:10:34] For many it seems like it's just not happening fast enough.
[00:10:37] So we can become easily frustrated
[00:10:40] and give up on this goal.
[00:10:41] We'll tell ourselves,
[00:10:42] see, I knew getting a six pack was impossible.
[00:10:45] What's the point?
[00:10:46] So let's say we do end up with that six pack.
[00:10:49] Does that mean our journey is now over?
[00:10:51] I hope not.
[00:10:53] We want to stay active and fit for as long as we possibly can.
[00:10:57] Instead, what if our reasons for changing
[00:11:00] were to be alive and healthy
[00:11:02] to see my grandchildren walk down the aisle
[00:11:05] or to be an example to my partner, children, friends,
[00:11:09] dog, guinea pig, whatever?
[00:11:12] These reasons will help keep you motivated
[00:11:14] when life starts getting in the way.
[00:11:16] You just need to remind yourself of these deeper reasons
[00:11:18] every now and then to help you stay on course.
[00:11:22] All right, that'll do it for today.
[00:11:23] I'll be back here tomorrow with another article as usual.
[00:11:27] So stay tuned for that where your optimal life awaits.
