[00:01:53] As I write this, my state of mind is a bit altered.

[00:01:57] I am running a temperature of 101.8 and I feel like I have had a conversation with Grim

[00:02:02] himself at least he was decent company.

[00:02:06] Normal Stuff

[00:02:08] On that preceding intro, allow me to explain myself.

[00:02:11] Today started out like any other normal day.

[00:02:14] I woke up early to tackle the errands in my schedule.

[00:02:17] I ate a bowl of oats, a monstrous plate of eggs and drank a shake.

[00:02:22] I had to run to the YMCA, update my membership information, go to the ATM and meet a good

[00:02:29] friend downtown to hang for a few hours.

[00:02:32] Not an incredibly happening day but you know fairly normal.

[00:02:36] That's exactly how I felt up until about 4pm.

[00:02:39] I felt as normal as a young guy can feel, just going about his business, living life

[00:02:44] and hanging out with one of his best friends.

[00:02:47] Not so normal stuff.

[00:02:49] Then it happened.

[00:02:51] On my way home my stomach wasn't acting like a normal stomach should be acting.

[00:02:57] It was actually hurting and rumbling and talking to me.

[00:03:01] I get to my place of residence and oddly, I don't feel like eating so I make an enormous

[00:03:06] shake in my gigantic blender that would put the fear of Moses and Jay Cordich from the late

[00:03:11] night juicer blender commercials.

[00:03:14] Eggs, oats, yogurt, cottage cheese, protein powder, peanut butter, the works.

[00:03:20] You name it, I put it in this shake.

[00:03:23] Excuse me, I'm straying off topic.

[00:03:26] And here is where I get uncomfortable.

[00:03:29] Back to my talking stomach.

[00:03:31] After I finished my shake, I wasn't too sure that was such a marvelous choice.

[00:03:37] My stomach still continued to nash its bloody teeth at me.

[00:03:42] So I chewed on a few roll-aids.

[00:03:44] Nothing.

[00:03:45] No relief.

[00:03:46] About 30 minutes later I decided it was a good time to be objective about my situation

[00:03:50] and admit to myself that I had come down with a nasty strain of influenza.

[00:03:56] In my misery, I took it upon myself to ingest a few PM friendly tabs of acetaminophen.

[00:04:02] This was 7 PM mind you.

[00:04:04] I laid in bed for two straight hours changing the channel back and forth between fight club

[00:04:09] and reservoir dogs.

[00:04:11] My body ached and was on fire at the same time.

[00:04:15] I couldn't decide to get out from underneath the layers of blankets or to set my hair ablaze

[00:04:20] and jump off of the top story of the nearest office building.

[00:04:23] At least that would take my mind off of the pain in my stomach.

[00:04:27] So as I lay there in gulfed in flames, I figured this may be a good time to check my temperature

[00:04:33] you know, for fun, among other health reasons.

[00:04:37] This is when I discovered I was slowly roasting from the inside out, 101.8 degrees Fahrenheit.

[00:04:45] As a result, I get up in hopes of forcing myself to eat something and possibly allow

[00:04:49] my temperature to subside a bit as I am sure the blankets and winter coat were not helping

[00:04:54] the matter.

[00:04:56] Reason behind my illness induced rambling.

[00:04:59] Why did I take the time to write all of this?

[00:05:02] Simple.

[00:05:03] I feel very strongly about my current situation.

[00:05:06] I am not appreciable of the fact that I understand I need to eat but I struggle to lift my

[00:05:12] hand to my mouth and insert protein rich foods.

[00:05:15] Although I am not on a fat lost diet at this moment, I am remembering a few accounts of

[00:05:20] fitness folk asking if it's all right to remain in a caloric deficit when you are sick

[00:05:25] and in the middle of a diet.

[00:05:27] Is it okay?

[00:05:28] One word?

[00:05:29] No.

[00:05:30] This is a period of time when your body is craving nutrients.

[00:05:34] In my current state, I am not craving anything processed or sweet in the sense of manufactured

[00:05:39] carbohydrates.

[00:05:41] I am craving apples, pears, oranges and a variety of melons.

[00:05:46] Too bad I feel terrible and don't think it would be a good idea to stroll over to my local

[00:05:50] grocer to snag some fruit.

[00:05:52] I'm stuck in this house until tomorrow morning when I should be in a better cognitive state

[00:05:56] to pick up some fresh fruit.

[00:05:58] Please, if you are listening to this, take these tips to heart and do not for whatever

[00:06:04] reason continue on your fat lost diet when you are ill.

[00:06:08] Take a few days off to eat as much fresh food as you can and just plenty of lean protein

[00:06:13] and do not forget to take your fish oils.

[00:06:16] 1.

[00:06:17] Your body is craving nutrients.

[00:06:19] In such a time when your body may feel like a raging furnace.

[00:06:23] When you are sick, your body needs all the energy it can acquire.

[00:06:27] Stick with the foods that are fresh and natural.

[00:06:30] Think of fruits, vegetables, oats and so on.

[00:06:33] Try to at least maintenance calories or slightly over maintenance.

[00:06:37] Your body will have a better chance of restoring itself.

[00:06:40] 2.

[00:06:42] Stay hydrated.

[00:06:43] Gatorade can be a good choice here.

[00:06:46] Eating lots of fruit will help rehydrate you since they are full of water and vitamins.

[00:06:51] Drink, drink, drink your water.

[00:06:53] Soup is also a very good choice to rehydrate and restore electrolytes when your rear end

[00:06:58] seems to be mimicking a busted fire hydrant.

[00:07:01] 3.

[00:07:03] Eat at least your body weight in grams of protein.

[00:07:06] Eating that hard-earned lean body mass.

[00:07:09] Your body needs energy.

[00:07:11] Make sure your protein intake is up to par so you prevent the loss of lean body mass.

[00:07:17] Eating protein along with fresh fruits should sit well in the stomach.

[00:07:21] I do not advocate eating protein only as this could cause more stomach complications.

[00:07:27] And 4.

[00:07:28] Rest.

[00:07:29] Out of everything I mentioned, this tip is most important.

[00:07:34] Sleep, sleep and more sleep are key to recovery when ill.

[00:07:39] Make a point to do nothing but sit on your rump, eat and sleep.

[00:07:43] Do not try to be capped in America and workout when you are sick.

[00:07:47] This will delay recovery and makes you more susceptible to injury due to lack of strength

[00:07:51] and focus.

[00:07:52] Stay home from work if you can.

[00:07:55] My plans for tomorrow are to go straight to the grocer, fill my basket with fresh fruit,

[00:08:00] watch fight club again and enjoy being lazy.

[00:08:03] I did have a workout scheduled for tomorrow, but I can work out any other day.

[00:08:08] While I have played the tough guy part in the past, this time I will sit this training

[00:08:13] session out.

[00:08:14] Plus, my blue and red Captain America suit is getting a little snug.

[00:08:18] Oh, and remember, meal frequency is not an issue.

[00:08:23] Just eat.

[00:10:18] JC's overall message is a good one.

[00:10:20] When we're sick, it is a good idea to fuel the body.

[00:10:24] One of the most common things dietitians learn in school is when a patient is sick, that

[00:10:29] means their body is under stress trying to heal.

[00:10:33] So that means the body is using lots of energy to try and heal.

[00:10:37] That means we need to recommend the patient eat more calories and more protein to help with

[00:10:42] the healing process.

[00:10:44] The problem is that when we're sick, we often don't feel like eating.

[00:10:48] If you've been vomiting or experiencing diarrhea, then you should avoid certain foods until

[00:10:53] the symptoms pass.

[00:10:55] But when you have the sore throat fever, coughing kind of symptoms, then it can be helpful

[00:11:00] to make sure you're consuming enough calories and protein to support your healing and recovery.

[00:11:05] And of course, yes, hydrate and rest as well.
