[00:01:26] Now on Fridays that's where I answer your questions. Remember you can send me a question

[00:01:42] Alright and with that let's hear today's post as we optimize your life. Get your mind right
[00:01:51] and your physique will follow by Jill Coleman of JillFit.com. Lately I've been thinking
[00:01:58] about the concept of getting real with ourselves. This is a tricky concept because for many it can
[00:02:04] be taken to the extreme. When we get real we can so easily fall into self-loathing and body
[00:02:10] disgust. We look in the mirror to get real and as a result decide we hate what we see. We're
[00:02:16] disgusted, shamed, sad, and get off all of which only serves to demotivate us further.
[00:02:23] And yet is the answer to avoid mirrors forever? I don't think it is. See I remember times in my
[00:02:29] past when I avoided mirrors too. Usually it was in my off season and even though I was a normal
[00:02:35] size 6 to 8 during those times I felt ugly and fat compared to show shape which mind you I
[00:02:41] was in for a mere couple of weeks but I was still haunted by the need and utter obsession
[00:02:47] with being in that kind of shape year round as unattainable and unhealthy as it would have
[00:02:51] been. During those years I would typically get up to work out around 5 a.m and because I didn't
[00:02:57] want to wake my partner by turning on the lights I would change into my gym clothes in
[00:03:01] the bathroom and I would turn around to avoid my reflection. Have you ever done this? How
[00:03:08] about avoiding being in pictures? Not looking when the nurse weighs you at your annual checkup?
[00:03:13] Not wanting to get your body fat percentage taken when the service is offered at your local
[00:03:19] gym? Do any of these ring true? They do for me at certain times in my life. Often avoidance
[00:03:24] seemed easier. I couldn't be disappointed if I wasn't given the information or the image
[00:03:30] or the photo or the reflection or the number to see, right? And yet I was miserable anyway
[00:03:36] despite the avoidance because I actually wasn't getting better. I wasn't more motivated to get
[00:03:42] leaner. I was losing a battle with myself as a result of my own twisted notion of what
[00:03:47] should be. I should be thinner. I should be leaner. I should have more muscle. I should look
[00:03:54] like so-and-so. I should be in show shape 24-7. I should be able to resist this glass of wine
[00:04:00] but I was in essence shoulding all over myself. The avoidance didn't actually help like I
[00:04:07] pretended it did. So in the last few months I've been thinking about how to effectively toe
[00:04:12] the line between getting real and also not spiraling into self-disgust. For my clients,
[00:04:18] for myself, for you. Can this be done? Well I think it can and the key lies in this realization.
[00:04:27] You must work on your mindset before you work on your physique. I have seen and heard from
[00:04:33] hundreds of people who have undergone a crazy physical transformation like a competition or crash
[00:04:38] diet or whatever and in the end because they have not spent time developing their self-worth
[00:04:44] apart from their physique, if they gain a little weight back or blow up after a show,
[00:04:49] they don't have the emotional tools to deal with the inevitable feelings of inadequacy and
[00:04:54] self-disgust. And yet we want the body first, don't we? In fact we usually say as soon as I
[00:05:01] have the body I want then I can be happy or deserving or attractive or successful or worthy
[00:05:07] or whatever. I want to make the argument that the opposite is true. When I decide I am worthy
[00:05:14] right now wherever I am then I free up all my mental space to be able to do the things I need
[00:05:20] to do to get and stay motivated. The mental aerobics that comes with shoulding ourselves
[00:05:27] discourages us from taking action toward real lasting progress. We get so caught up in how much
[00:05:33] we suck that of course we're not motivated. Can you blame us? All we can think about is how much
[00:05:39] of a failure we are if we slip up one time and holy crap I need to prep my food this Sunday.
[00:05:45] Of course when you do prep food you are more likely to be successful but food prep doesn't
[00:05:50] define your success, you do right now in your mind and that success does not depend on a
[00:05:56] number or an image or a photo or a bad angle. When we spend time developing our sense of self-worth
[00:06:03] outside our physique not only are we happier right now but we are free to move forward in
[00:06:08] a positive way. It's the negative self-talk that steals our motivation so let's just stop it.
[00:06:14] And for those who say they need the negative motivation to drive them to take action
[00:06:19] that may work for a while but take it from me that crap gets old real quick. It takes a
[00:06:26] lot of energy to keep hating your body so free yourself, free your energy and your mental space
[00:06:32] of the negative so that you can actually garner the willpower necessary to make real lasting
[00:06:37] change. Remember mindset first physique next. When you do this looking in the mirror is no
[00:06:44] longer painful nor does it control your day or how you feel about yourself. You can be more
[00:06:50] objective clinical you can get real without getting upset you don't have to be thin to
[00:06:55] be worthy and you don't have to lose 10 more pounds to be happy. The concepts are no longer
[00:07:01] linked once you spend time working on your mind. Here are some of my favorite ways to develop
[00:07:07] self-worth apart from your body fat percentage. Develop other skills and interests like blogging
[00:07:13] or start a small business of your own write read spend time with family and friends
[00:07:20] volunteer go back to school or even just take a class in something you're interested in
[00:07:25] like cooking focus on being an amazing person go hiking focus on non-physique related activities
[00:07:32] like triathlons a 5k or an adventure race good luck i'm here for you and support you 100%

[00:09:38] today's author jill said something that i want to repeat jill said that we often tell ourselves
[00:09:43] that as soon as we have the body we want only then can we feel happy or deserving or attractive
[00:09:50] or successful or worthy but is that really true let's think about it this way what happens
[00:09:56] when you do reach your goal of having the body you want will that happiness or sense of
[00:10:01] attractiveness or feelings of worthiness now last forever now that we have this body what
[00:10:07] happens if we start to gain some weight back are we no longer attractive should we go back
[00:10:13] to being unhappy i hope that helps us realize that reaching a goal size or shape isn't the end
[00:10:19] of the journey it's just one stop on the journey because once we've reached that goal
[00:10:25] it means we probably should maintain those habits for a lifetime so when it comes to getting
[00:10:30] our minds right as jill said it's great to have goals but remember that this process is a journey
[00:10:36] that lasts a lifetime all right that'll do it for another edition of optimal health daily
[00:10:42] i hope you have a great rest of your day and weekend thank you so much for listening and
[00:10:46] thank you for sharing this show with someone of course i'll be back here tomorrow as usual
[00:10:51] so i'll see you there where your optimal life awaits
