[00:01:00] By Steve Kamm of nerdfitness.com. And I'm your host and narrator, Dr. Neil. Hey there, happy middle of the week Wednesday and welcome back to Optimal Health Daily, where I read some of the best health and fitness blogs to you,

[00:01:13] and always with a bit of my commentary at the end. Now, today is Wednesday, but I'm not going to be doing a lot of commentary. Now, today is Wednesday, and like I do every Wednesday, I like to share a little bit of inspiration with you.

[00:01:27] So with that, here we go. Quote, Now and then it's good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy. Guillaume Apollinaire. All right, and with that, let's get right to it and start optimizing your life. Are you collecting a pile of underpants?

[00:01:50] By Steve Kamm of nerdfitness.com. Today I want to talk about a very serious subject. Underpants. A pile of underpants, to be specific. These underpants will help you achieve success in every facet of your life. From looking better, to living better, eating better, to feeling better,

[00:02:09] and even starting your own company. I guarantee that today's blog will be so ridiculous that you'll never forget it. Now, I'll also need some help from a few friends to get my point across. I want you to meet the underpants gnomes. Who the heck are the underpants gnomes?

[00:02:27] Let me tell you the tale of the underpants gnomes. In the town of South Park, Colorado, underpants gnomes sneak into people's houses during the middle of the night and steal their underpants. They even have a theme song that they sing while working,

[00:02:41] sort of like the seven dwarves, but with more underpants. Can you see where I'm going with this yet? I hope not because if so, you're most likely messed up in the head. Don't you worry that pretty little head of yours though.

[00:02:53] I promise this will all make sense by the end and you'll go, ah, Steve, you're too dang smart and good looking and modest. Or you'll stop reading Nerd Fitness immediately and decide I belong in the nut house. Either way, let this one play out before making your decision.

[00:03:10] The secret lies in the gnomes' complete lack of a business plan. You see, they're collecting underpants to build a big business, apparently. The Gnomes' Business Plan When the gnomes are questioned why they collect underpants, they say, collecting underpants is just phase one.

[00:03:28] However, when asked about phase two, not a single gnome knows. Following the chart, you'll see that phase three is profit, which is awesome, but they have no clue how to get there. This means that these gnomes spend all day and all night collecting underpants

[00:03:45] without having any clue how to move on to phase two or phase three. Your Phase One Whether you realize it or not, you probably spend most of your day collecting underpants. For example, reading about exercise and diet and fitness and health,

[00:04:01] learning everything you know about how to do a push-up, how to build a workout, how to learn parkour, and more. Or reading about how to build an online business, researching the four-hour work week, or even paying big bucks to learn from other entrepreneurs.

[00:04:15] Or reading every personal finance book and blog to learn how to get out of debt. Welcome to phase one. This is your pile of underpants. Phase three is what you hope to accomplish after starting to build your pile. You're level 50, if you will.

[00:04:30] Which brings me to the point of today's article. Successful people dominate phase two. You can spend all day, every day learning and collecting and researching. In fact, you could be the best information gatherer in the entire world. You know what that will get you?

[00:04:48] A big pile of underpants. Phase two is figuring out what to do with that knowledge to get to profit or health or love or whatever. People who dominate phase two take action. People who dominate phase two understand that trying and failing and learning from previous

[00:05:08] mistakes is so much more valuable than spending more time researching without attempting anything. Here's my advice. Learn how to eat right and then try to cook a healthy meal. Tonight. Learn about personal finance and start paying down your debt, even if you can only spare $5. Tonight.

[00:05:27] Learn how to build confidence and then go up and talk to the next cute person you see immediately. Learn how to speak a new language and then find somebody who speaks it fluently and start speaking from day one.

[00:05:41] Spend all day researching how to build something and then try to make it today, even if it turns out great. I get a few emails every day from people who say something like, I've done the research.

[00:05:53] I know what I'm supposed to do, but I don't have the motivation to start. Can you give that to me? Unfortunately, I can't. Phase two and what you do with your pile of underpants has to come from you. The desire to change, live better, look better, feel better,

[00:06:10] and then the guts to try things out and see what works. Phase two is the ability to fail repeatedly and continue to attempt new things. Success and phase three comes when you learn to take things you've learned and researched and successfully put them into practice.

[00:06:27] People ask me how I started Nerd Fitness and built a business around it. Simple. I started. I read the four-hour work week. I read 279 days to overnight success and then just started writing five articles a week for nine months until I discovered what worked and what didn't

[00:06:45] and then cranked out to 2,500 to 5,000 word articles a week every week for the past two and a half years. I didn't spend money on blogging classes, internet marketing books, SEO strategy or writing courses because that's a lot of underpants.

[00:07:01] I started writing crappy articles that got less and less crappy, put my focus on helping people and learning how to make more of an impact with my writing. And years later, here I am. Ask Jim of Beast Skills how he became a gymnastics guru. He taught himself.

[00:07:18] He read books and watched videos, watched other people doing these things and then he went out and did it. He probably fell, busted up his body repeatedly but he got better and better and now he teaches people this stuff for a living. Want the secret?

[00:07:33] Spend 10% of your effort on phase one and 90% on phase two, trying new stuff. Pick up some weights and try to strength train. Go into your gym, put the bar across your shoulders and attempt your first squat. Ask somebody out and get shot down. Build a business that sucks.

[00:07:53] Start a crappy blog. Why? Because you're actually doing something. Learn from the gnomes mistake. Don't get stuck with a pile of underpants. Dominate phase two and make profit. So I ask you, what type of underpants are you collecting? And what are you going to do with them today?

[00:08:13] What's one actionable step you're going to take today to turn those underpants into profit? You just listened to the post titled, Are You Collecting a Pile of Underpants? By Steve Kam of NerdFitness.com And I'll be right back with my commentary.

[00:09:24] Slows full terms at mintmobile.com. Dr. Neil here for my commentary. If we find we just can't get ourselves to take that first actionable step, like today's author Steve talked about in today's post, we may end up convincing ourselves that it's just not worth taking the risk

[00:09:39] and doing that thing that we've been putting off. But there's a way to get ourselves to take that first step, and I've shared this trick before. Take out a piece of paper and draw a line down the center of it.

[00:09:51] On the left side of the line and at the top of the page, write the word cons. On the right side of the line and at the top of the page, you guessed it, write the word pros. Yes, you heard me right.

[00:10:04] Create a good old-fashioned pros and cons list. So when we ask ourselves whether we should take action or not, write down the pros and cons of doing so. And notice, I suggest starting out by listing the cons first.

[00:10:18] That's why those are on the left side of the page. Then end by listing the pros. By ending on a positive note, this will hopefully help get us into the right mindset to actually take action. So to repeat what Steve said in today's post,

[00:10:34] do that pros and cons list today. Ideally, immediately. All right, that'll do it for today. I hope you have a great rest of your Wednesday, and I'll see you back here on tomorrow's show where your optimal life awaits.
