[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_00]: This is Optimal Health Daily. Ring The Alarm, Off Limits, The Enemy Of Success by Roger Lawson of RoglawFitness.com and I'm Dr. Neal, your host and narrator.

[00:00:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Hey there, welcome back to another episode of Optimal Health Daily.

[00:00:15] [SPEAKER_00]: This is where I read to you from some of the best health and fitness blogs on the web,

[00:00:19] [SPEAKER_00]: kind of like an ongoing audiobook and always with a bit of my commentary at the end.

[00:00:24] [SPEAKER_00]: And every Wednesday I always share a little bit of inspiration with you and since today's Wednesday,

[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_00]: it's time. So here we go.

[00:00:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Quote,

[00:00:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Once you find something you love to do, be the best at doing it.

[00:00:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Debbie Fields.

[00:00:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, and with that, let's get right to it as we optimize your life.

[00:00:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Ring The Alarm, Off Limits, The Enemy Of Success by Roger Lawson of RoglawFitness.com

[00:00:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Once upon a time, my homeboy, JC Dean, set the internet ablaze with his article addressing the concept of clean eating,

[00:01:05] [SPEAKER_00]: touching on why it should be buried and added to the list of words never to be uttered again.

[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I for one couldn't be happier to grab a shovel and start digging.

[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Why so serious?

[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_00]: All it takes is one look in the comments section of JC's post to come to the conclusion that

[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_00]: people are highly protective of their food choices, and when they're threatened,

[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_00]: are likely to resort to a verbal diarrhea in its defense.

[00:01:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Take for instance this gem from the comment section.

[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Quote,

[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I tried to read your article with an open mind, but as the author of a clean eating recipe blog and

[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_00]: somebody who has been eating clean for over three years now,

[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_00]: I have to strongly disagree with you on just about every level.

[00:01:47] [SPEAKER_00]: You also state, quote, food is neither clean nor unclean but merely energy my body needs to function

[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_00]: and survive.

[00:01:54] [SPEAKER_00]: And quote,

[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Not true. The body processes different foods very differently.

[00:01:59] [SPEAKER_00]: The more refined and processed a food is the worst it is for your body.

[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_00]: The body processes refine foods very quickly and dumps the glucose into the bloodstream.

[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_00]: The pancreas then has to kick into overdrive to make up for the excess.

[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Do this often enough and you end up with diabetes.

[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_00]: And quote,

[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_00]: The inaccurate claims made here are an entirely separate issue but if nothing else at

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_00]: highlights one important fact, this person didn't read the article.

[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_00]: At all, the fitness and health industry is home to some of the internet's finest alarmists.

[00:02:34] [SPEAKER_00]: In one camp you have those who swear that carbs, especially when consumed mere moments

[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_00]: after the moon rises, will magically dawned pimped tire and invite all the neighborhood fat

[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_00]: into your body for a night on the town. They often worship at the altar of fat,

[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_00]: if carbs are the problem then unlimited amounts of fat are the solution.

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Then of course you have those who place the blame of the globes

[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_00]: ever expanding waistline on the consumption of fat. These folks are responsible for more

[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_00]: egocomocides than Humpty Dumpty and they are more than likely to push an elderly lady into

[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_00]: oncoming traffic if she even offers them a bite of her cheeseburger.

[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_00]: These are only a few examples of the many camps and factions running a muck today,

[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_00]: but they all represent reductionist thinking, which is at best unproductive

[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_00]: than at worst, misleading and acts as a roadblock on the path to objectivity.

[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Nevertheless, when debate sparks and ones ideology has challenged unsubstantiated statements

[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_00]: and strawmen arguments are without a doubt lurking nearby. Their baby is under attack

[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_00]: and it is their duty to defend her with all the zeal Dick and mustard.

[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_00]: And if that means cherry picking scientific research or downright creating fax out of thin air

[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_00]: in order to back up their viewpoints then so be it. Emotional content

[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_00]: In the commenters quote, they barely made it past the headline of the article before diving

[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_00]: head first into an emotional response due to thinking that their way of eating was under attack

[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_00]: when that couldn't be further from the truth. Do you see the problem with this trend?

[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll admit that when you feel justified in doing so it's hard to not respond emotionally

[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_00]: to particular topics and it's something all of us have done at one time or another, but here's

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_00]: the thing, you don't have to give into your emotions when responding. Take a step back,

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_00]: breathe in, breathe out, woo-sa. Come back after you've had time to reflect on the merits

[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_00]: of the argument and can respond in turn. That is the power of the inner webs. You can be as

[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_00]: cool, calm and collected as you want to be or fly off at the mouth making false claims only

[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_00]: to end up looking like a supreme truffin. The choices yours and yours alone.

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Pitfalls of extremism

[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_00]: The worst part about maintaining an extreme point of view is that in most cases

[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_00]: you are hurting yourself the most. Taking such a stance ensures that you are often so far

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_00]: to either side that no sort of middle ground can be seen from your vantage point and there's no

[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_00]: room left for the possibility of learning something that may change your mind for the better.

[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_00]: You are shut off, your thoughts have been crystallized and that's that. Excuse me, are you saying

[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_00]: something? No, you can't tell me nothing. If that road is one we'd like to leave less traveled,

[00:05:21] [SPEAKER_00]: what's the alternative? Clean eating, the problem. The best way to level up your knowledge game

[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_00]: is to become a student of life again, realizing that what you know now isn't all that there

[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_00]: is to know and that within every interaction is the opportunity to learn more.

[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Leapiel wrote a fantastic article on the subject of cheat meals and how the way we're approaching

[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_00]: them is fundamentally wrong and I couldn't agree more. By setting yourself up to cheat,

[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_00]: you are operating under the false assumption that what you are about to eat is wrong

[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_00]: and that you shouldn't be having it. By placing certain foods into a different category

[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_00]: than those that you normally eat, you are putting them on a pedestal which increases the likelihood

[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_00]: that you are craving said foods because of the simple fact that you told yourself that you shouldn't

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_00]: be eating them. Clean eating, the solution. Objectivity, common sense and moderation

[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_00]: should act as your guide posts. This was the entire point of Jayce's original article but many

[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_00]: people seemed to have abandoned ship before getting far enough into the piece to recognize this

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_00]: fact. Realize that no foods are off limits whatsoever and that having the body that you desire

[00:06:33] [SPEAKER_00]: and living the life that you want don't have to be at odds with one another. Make sure that

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_00]: you get adequate protein, three to four grams of fish oil, lots of veggies, some fruit,

[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_00]: and fill the rest of your caloric allotment with what is commonly referred to as discretionary calories,

[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_00]: which can come from apple pie to zucchini and everything else in between. The human body is a

[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_00]: beautiful piece of adaptable hardware so make sure to experiment and find what is best for you

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_00]: because in the end that's all that matters. As long as you're moving towards your goals,

[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_00]: let your results speak for you and leave the worrying to those who are awesome at it. I'd like to

[00:07:13] [SPEAKER_00]: leave you with a quote from Lyle McDonald's Research Review in which he tackles this very subject.

[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_00]: quote given caloric control the body's response to a given set of nutrients with the

[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_00]: exception of blood lipids would appear to be more determined by total caloric and macro content

[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_00]: of that meal, more than the source of the food. In terms of the hormonal response, clean versus

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_00]: unclean just doesn't matter it's all about calories and macros you just listen to the post titled

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_00]: ring the alarm, off limits the enemy of success by Roger Lawson of RajlawFitness.com

[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_00]: and I'll be right back with my commentary. Taking charge of my health has been a priority for me

[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Dr. Neil here for my commentary. Today's author Roger and regular contributor to this show

[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_00]: both agree that so-called reductionist thinking can hinder our success. Roger argued very

[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_00]: clearly the reasons why this could be an issue, like how avoiding certain foods may make us crave

[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_00]: them even more. And yes this is very possible and often happens. It comes down to our very nature

[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_00]: as human beings. We like options. We don't want to be restricted in our options. We want to be

[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_00]: afraid to choose whatever foods we want whenever we want them. When we do restrict them,

[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_00]: part of us wants to rebel a little again because we like having more options. Now in the beginning

[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_00]: it can feel really good to limit which foods we can and can't have because it makes meal planning

[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_00]: and prepping a lot easier. But after a while we want to be able to eat freely and without restrictions

[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_00]: again. So if it's possible let's think about adding foods into our meals instead of removing them.

[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Like adding more vegetables and other whole foods and then eating those first,

[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_00]: then we will automatically likely happen is we push out those foods that aren't so great for us.

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_00]: When we add in more foods that are good for our bodies, that'll tend to push out those foods

[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_00]: that maybe aren't so great. So we may end up consuming them less often and still feel just a satisfied.

[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_00]: And the best part is we haven't told ourselves we cannot have a certain food or ingredient.

[00:10:44] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll write that'll do it for today. I hope you have a great rest of your day and I'll see you back

[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_00]: here on tomorrow's show where your optimal life awaits.
