[00:01:48] In the words of George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel,
[00:01:52] Quote,
[00:01:53] Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion.
[00:01:56] End quote.
[00:01:58] Wilhelm's words ring loud and clear for me.
[00:02:00] I don't want to be ordinary.
[00:02:02] I want to stand out.
[00:02:03] I want to excel.
[00:02:04] I am passionate about everything that I do.
[00:02:07] I will never settle for anything but my personal best.
[00:02:10] To make the most of your training, you must bring passion to the gym.
[00:02:14] Passion is more important than even the most sophisticated forms of periodization, program creation, restoration, and supplementation.
[00:02:22] If you are not passionate, you are indifferent and lost in a job-like mentality.
[00:02:28] Indifference means that you don't care one way or another.
[00:02:30] If you are indifferent about your training, don't expect anything but nothing.
[00:02:36] Fortunately, it isn't difficult to find something that you can be passionate about.
[00:02:40] You are free to choose whatever you enjoy.
[00:02:42] No one can pick for you.
[00:02:44] Regardless of what some may say, you are not defined by the activity that you choose.
[00:02:49] You are defined by how you attack the activity.
[00:02:52] A passionate powerlifter is no better than a passionate ultra-marathon runner.
[00:02:56] He is different.
[00:02:58] Different is different.
[00:02:59] Different is not better or worse.
[00:03:02] There was a time in my life when I was passionate about running.
[00:03:05] It wasn't uncommon for me to run several miles every day of the month.
[00:03:09] I ran in several road races and loved every minute of it.
[00:03:12] However, my interests changed over time.
[00:03:15] Eventually, the running bug left me and I moved on to something else.
[00:03:19] In fact, I regularly shift gears in terms of passion and goals.
[00:03:22] I get bored easily.
[00:03:23] If I no longer enjoy an exercise or activity, I will move on to another challenge.
[00:03:28] Whoever said that variety is the spice of life was certainly on to something.
[00:03:32] When I do shift gears, I remain the same person.
[00:03:35] Take, for example, my running craze.
[00:03:37] It was still me.
[00:03:39] I'm not better than I was 15 years ago simply because my passion has changed.
[00:03:43] Today's passion is different.
[00:03:45] It isn't better or worse.
[00:03:47] When I ran regularly, I put forth my best effort.
[00:03:50] When I trained this morning, I also put forth my best effort.
[00:03:54] I gave it everything that I had.
[00:03:56] The only difference between now and then is that the direction of my effort has changed.
[00:04:01] Over the years, I've trained extensively with bodyweight exercise, free weights, odd objects,
[00:04:06] and just about everything else that is remotely related to exercise.
[00:04:10] I am not defined based on what I'm using for a particular month or year.
[00:04:14] I am who I am based on the effort that I put forth each day.
[00:04:18] Unfortunately, many fail to realize this simple fact.
[00:04:21] There are groups that will judge you based on how you train.
[00:04:24] These elitists feel that they are better than you if you don't do what they are doing.
[00:04:28] They are blinded by their own ignorance.
[00:04:30] They've actually convinced themselves that they are the only people in the world who understand the meaning of hard work.
[00:04:36] Take, for example, the trash talk that is often seen on large message boards between different training groups.
[00:04:41] I often see bodybuilders dissed by others.
[00:04:44] Personally, bodybuilding is not my cup of tea,
[00:04:46] but that does not mean I don't respect those bodybuilders who bust their you-know-what's in the gym.
[00:04:51] I've met many bodybuilders over the years who work as hard as anyone I've ever seen.
[00:04:56] Their dedication to training and diet surpasses many of the professional athletes that I've trained.
[00:05:01] These bodybuilders are working just as hard as you.
[00:05:04] Perhaps their work is different, but that doesn't mean they're not putting forth a 100% effort.
[00:05:10] It isn't as if the bodybuilder approaches the bar and decides to only put forth a partial effort
[00:05:16] simply because he is a bodybuilder.
[00:05:18] Once again, you are not defined by the activities you choose.
[00:05:21] You are defined by how you attack the activity.
[00:05:23] I don't respect athletes for what they do.
[00:05:26] I respect athletes for how they do it.
[00:05:29] In the words of T. Alan Armstrong,
[00:05:32] quote,
[00:05:32] If there is no passion in your life, then have you really lived?
[00:05:36] Find your passion, whatever it may be.
[00:05:38] Become it, and let it become you,
[00:05:41] and you will find great things happen for you,
[00:05:43] to you and because of you.
[00:05:45] End quote.
[00:05:47] Where to look.
[00:05:48] I can't tell you what to be passionate about.
[00:05:51] It isn't for me to decide.
[00:05:52] You must find something that you enjoy.
[00:05:55] Your work will be exponentially more effective
[00:05:58] if you find an activity or sport that you truly enjoy.
[00:06:01] Do not let anyone choose for you.
[00:06:04] Find out for yourself.
[00:06:05] Get your hands dirty and see what lights your fire.
[00:06:08] I also suggest charting progress and working towards defined goals.
[00:06:13] When I ran regularly, I always try to run faster.
[00:06:16] When I lift weights, I try to lift heavier weights.
[00:06:19] When I work with bodyweight exercise,
[00:06:21] I try to work with more challenging variations.
[00:06:23] I'm always working towards a new goal,
[00:06:26] regardless of the training style.
[00:06:28] I don't train aimlessly.
[00:06:29] I'm training for something specific.
[00:06:32] You don't need to train for a sport to have precise training goals.
[00:06:36] And even if your sole focus is to improve aesthetically,
[00:06:39] I still suggest working towards precise goals.
[00:06:42] Performance-based goals can be quantified.
[00:06:44] Your body will come along for the ride
[00:06:47] by adapting to the demands imposed upon it.
[00:06:49] Professional athletes offer the perfect example to this concept.
[00:06:53] These athletes train specifically for their events.
[00:06:56] They are not training to look good,
[00:06:57] but it isn't uncommon for this to happen
[00:07:00] simply because of the work that is put forth
[00:07:02] in pursuit of their goals.
[00:07:04] It's a win-win situation,
[00:07:05] and you are able to chart legitimate improvements in performance.
[00:07:09] Perhaps you're lifting 10 more pounds than you were last month,
[00:07:12] or perhaps you've gone from 5 reps on the pull-up bar to 10.
[00:07:16] These are quantifiable improvements that you can track over time,
[00:07:20] as opposed to staring in the mirror
[00:07:22] and guessing whether you look 5.3 or 7.4% better than you did last month.
[00:07:28] And even if you're training solely for looks,
[00:07:30] what happens when you're finally happy with your appearance?
[00:07:33] For example, suppose a woman decides that she wants to fit into her old bikini.
[00:07:38] She busts her you-know-what for four months before summer
[00:07:41] and achieves her goal.
[00:07:42] What does she do now?
[00:07:44] Does she enter a 15-year maintenance period without any defined goals?
[00:07:47] The visual goal has already been realized,
[00:07:49] so what else can she look forward to?
[00:07:52] Without a measurable goal,
[00:07:53] it is common for the individual to lose passion.
[00:07:56] When passion fades, expect results to fade as well.
[00:08:00] When you focus on performance-based goals, however,
[00:08:03] you'll never run into this problem.
[00:08:05] I'm always finding new ways to challenge myself.
[00:08:08] Each challenge provides a unique outlet for my passion.
[00:08:12] I don't know what I'll be doing this time next year,
[00:08:14] but I do know that I'll be working hard on whatever the goal may be.
[00:08:18] Once you determine the power of passion,
[00:08:20] it isn't something that you'll ever want to lose.
[00:08:23] My passion towards life drives me forward.
[00:08:26] It is a burning desire to constantly improve.
[00:08:29] Great things are fueled by passion,
[00:08:31] so why settle for anything less?
[00:08:33] If you want to stand out in life,
[00:08:35] you'd better be passionate.
[00:08:37] Find your passion and pursue it relentlessly.

[00:08:56] It's so funny because the other day,
[00:08:58] when I was teaching my Fundamentals of Motivation and Behavior Change class,
[00:09:02] the idea of course setting goals came up.
[00:09:05] And we talked about this very thing.
[00:09:07] What happens when you set a goal for yourself to look a certain way?
[00:09:10] While that's not necessarily inherently wrong,
[00:09:14] Ross made a great point.
[00:09:16] What happens when you reach that goal?
[00:09:18] Where you end up looking like the Man of Steel,
[00:09:21] or the guys from 300,
[00:09:23] or that actress whose body you've always wanted to have.
[00:09:26] What happens when you ultimately get to that point?
[00:09:30] So do you say,
[00:09:31] awesome, done it,
[00:09:32] now I'm good,
[00:09:33] I'm just going to stop all these behaviors that I was doing.
[00:09:37] Sometimes that happens.
[00:09:38] And so I love that Ross took the approach of,
[00:09:40] that's great if you end up looking like that.
[00:09:42] That's wonderful.
[00:09:43] But that may be a byproduct of all those wonderful behaviors that you were doing.
[00:09:49] So why not maintain that?
[00:09:51] Continue those behaviors,
[00:09:53] and keep looking that way.
[00:09:55] Keep feeling good about yourself.
[00:09:57] Keep your heart healthy.
[00:09:58] Because that's really what it's about, right?
[00:10:01] It's having that quality of life.
[00:10:03] And if you can look the way you want to,
[00:10:05] with that quality of life,
[00:10:07] well now we're onto something.
[00:10:09] So yes, set goals.
[00:10:11] If you want to look a certain way,
[00:10:13] okay, but let's put some numbers on that.
[00:10:16] How many days a week is it going to take you to train to look like that?
[00:10:20] Or how many calories,
[00:10:22] or what size portions should you have
[00:10:24] to get yourself to look like that?
[00:10:26] That's the stuff that really you need to focus on.
[00:10:29] Because that's what's going to create a lifestyle.
[00:10:32] How many days a week is it going to take you to look like that?
[00:10:34] So you can look like that for a lifetime,
[00:10:37] or most of your life hopefully.
[00:10:38] And stay healthy in the meantime.
[00:10:41] Stay feeling positive.
[00:10:43] And to use that momentum for years and years and years.
[00:10:47] All right, that'll do it for today.
