[00:01:49] Setting goals is an important part of both our professional and our personal lives. As personal trainers, our programming depends heavily on having a good understanding of what our clients' goals are. We've spoken many times about using the SMART goal method to set goals for yourself. But have you heard about OKRs or Objectives and Key Results?

[00:02:11] In this article, we're going to explain to you what these are and how you can use them to achieve more in life and at the gym. What are OKRs? OKRs or Objectives and Key Results is a method and a process to set and achieve goals. The term OKRs has been popularized by John Doerr, author of Measure What Matters, after being mentored by Andy Grove.

[00:02:39] This system for setting and tracking goal progress has been used by companies like Google, Netflix, and even Bono, lead singer of U2, has used this method for his charitable work. It allows you to look at your goals in a step-by-step way, giving you little wins along the way to achieving the main goal. The objective is the main goal or the what. This should be something specific and measurable and inspiring.

[00:03:06] In the example of Google, they wanted to make the best internet browser on the market. Notice this was specific, measurable, and definitely inspiring to everyone working on the project. The key results are the how. These are milestones along the way that, when achieved, will bring you closer to your objective. In the example of Google, their key results were based on users. Each year, they set their key results to be a certain number of users using Google Chrome,

[00:03:36] and every year they would report back on whether or not they met those goals. By communicating the OKRs to the entire Google Chrome team, everyone knew exactly what the company wanted to achieve and what it would take to achieve that. How you can use them to achieve your health and fitness goals. There are a few elements that must be included in order to use OKRs to their fullest potential. First, you need at least one objective.

[00:04:04] Remember that you have to be specific, measurable, and inspiring. This can be running a half marathon next fall after recovering from an ankle injury that you encounter. This is specific and measurable because we know exactly what you'll be doing running a half marathon next fall and inspiring because you are coming off an ankle injury and initially may have thought that your running career was over. Now, for the key results.

[00:04:31] Remember that these are the how of your objective. What are the key results between now and that half marathon that you'll need to keep track of in order to achieve that goal of running a half marathon? These could be things like getting the green light from your physical therapist or physician, training the half marathon distance without pain at least once before the race, and working on foot and ankle stability or mobility with a personal trainer.

[00:04:58] Whatever your goal is, think about how you can break down that goal into smaller goals that will help you achieve the main objective. If you have a weight loss goal, OKRs are a great option to help keep you motivated. Setting key results would give you those endorphin-boosting little wins that are crucial for maintaining a consistent effort at the gym. If you want to get really technical, you can even use OKRs for specific exercises at the gym.

[00:05:25] Let's say your goal is to deadlift 225 pounds by the end of this year. Your key results could include hiring a personal trainer, working on mobility twice a week, working on your core strength three times a week, and deadlifting twice a week. Each of these smaller goals will contribute to the larger objective of deadlifting 225 pounds by the end of this year. You just listened to the post titled

Mehr auf servicenow.de slash AI for People Dr. Neil hier for my commentary. Before reading this post, I had never heard of OKRs. But I can tell you, I'm definitely sold on this idea. That's because I'm always talking about keeping the momentum going somehow. Whenever you're trying to start a new habit,

[00:06:50] it's important to remember and acknowledge those small wins. We tend to focus all of our attention on the end goal. If your goal is to run a set distance or lift a certain amount of weight or gain or lose a certain number of pounds, we often don't feel we are successful until we have reached that set goal. And I get it. But in order to stay motivated and remind yourself of your progress, we need to remember how important those small wins are. We need to stop for a moment,

[00:07:20] look back and see the progress we have made thus far. And in that moment, when we look back at our progress, we need to give ourselves a pat on the back. And in fact, as I was saying this out loud, an image came to mind that I think will serve as a nice metaphor. There's a beach that I like to go to that us locals call 1000 Steps. It has that nickname because there are lots and lots of stairs that you have to navigate to get from the parking lot, which is located at the top of the stairs,

[00:07:50] to the beach at the bottom. That means after a long day at the beach, you then have to climb those many, many stairs to get back to your car. Now, I actually counted how many stairs there are. It's definitely not a thousand. But at the end of a long day at the beach, it just feels like a thousand. So there are moments when you're climbing those steps and it feels like you're never going to reach the top. When I start to feel out of breath, I'll occasionally turn around to see how far I've come.

[00:08:17] I'll stop, turn around, and look at the view of the ocean and look to see how many steps I've climbed so far. That moment of reflection is like the little wins I was talking about. Take a moment to acknowledge the progress you've made towards your goals. Enjoy the view from where you are. Then, turn around and keep going. All right, that'll do it for the Monday episode. I hope you have a great start to your week and I'll be back here tomorrow as usual where your optimal life awaits.
