[00:01:06] Do affirmations work?
[00:01:08] How to effectively employ affirmations by clearing negative beliefs by JoelBind of JoelBind.com
[00:01:15] and I'm Justin Mollick.
[00:01:16] I read to you every day with permission from the authors and we have a bunch of shows
[00:01:20] where we read to you covering different topics.
[00:01:22] Search for Optimal Living Daily wherever you're hearing this to find all of them.
[00:01:27] And out today I have a new author for the show I'll tell you about Joel right after
[00:01:31] the reading.
[00:01:33] So for now let's get right to it as we optimize your life.
[00:01:41] Do affirmations work?
[00:01:43] How to effectively employ affirmations by clearing negative beliefs by JoelBind of JoelBind.com
[00:01:51] Don't affirmations don't work.
[00:01:53] It's probably a thought you've had before or at least you've heard someone else say it.
[00:01:58] Why is this so common?
[00:01:59] Why do so many people struggle to have success with saying positive and healthy statements
[00:02:04] to themselves?
[00:02:05] Well for one, positive affirmations have a reputation as self-help fluff as hilariously
[00:02:12] depicted in the old Stuart Smalley Saturday night life skits.
[00:02:15] I'm good enough, I'm smart enough and dog-honoured people like me.
[00:02:20] I'm fair enough, I mean if anything gets the gold medal for self-help fluff it's probably
[00:02:25] positive affirmations.
[00:02:27] After all standing in front of a mirror and telling yourself, I'm awesome, is about
[00:02:31] as stereotypical as it gets.
[00:02:34] So it's understandable that a part of you would see them as silly.
[00:02:39] On top of that people who try to write or say affirmations often struggle to see
[00:02:45] them stick.
[00:02:46] They try to build self-acceptance and self-love by consciously telling themselves empowering
[00:02:51] statements.
[00:02:52] And they might feel better for a few minutes, but then the negative emotions, disempowering
[00:02:57] inner critics and self-heating voices start to come back up for the rest of the day.
[00:03:03] No wonder affirmations get a bad rap.
[00:03:06] Why affirmations don't work?
[00:03:08] But here's a new angle on why they don't work for many people.
[00:03:13] Most people have opposing negative limiting beliefs buried in their subconscious mind.
[00:03:20] So adding a positive affirmation on top becomes akin to spraying dog with some air freshener.
[00:03:27] It might help for a few minutes, but you never solve the problem.
[00:03:31] To use myself as an example, for years I'd write down the affirmation I am enough in my
[00:03:37] daily journal.
[00:03:38] I never seemed to do anything, but my kept it up hoping over time I could convince myself
[00:03:44] of my enoughness.
[00:03:46] But then I realized a key reason for my struggle.
[00:03:50] A subconscious part of me was holding onto the opposite belief.
[00:03:55] I'm not enough.
[00:03:57] Exploring more deeply, I connected to this part of me and learned that it was stemming
[00:04:01] from a childhood trauma, a deeper wound.
[00:04:05] Once I employed an effective method to connect with this deeply wounded part of me that believed
[00:04:10] I'm not enough, then I became free.
[00:04:14] I helped that part of me see that the belief it had created was not actually true, but
[00:04:19] rather it was meaning given to navigate through and cope with a childhood event.
[00:04:26] As soon as the subconscious part of me realized that I'm not enough literally was a made-up
[00:04:31] story rather than an absolute truth about reality.
[00:04:35] I released it forever, and the negative emotions that came along with it.
[00:04:40] After that, not only did the negative belief I'm not enough feel ridiculous to me, the
[00:04:46] affirmation I am enough could actually serve a purpose.
[00:04:51] Saying it now feels much more enriching and valuable because there is no subconscious
[00:04:56] oppositional energy that views it as nonsense.
[00:05:00] I've since done this with hundreds of other negative beliefs in the areas of not only
[00:05:05] self-worth but money, relationships, work ethic and more.
[00:05:10] It's safe to say that letting go of beliefs at the root has completely transformed my life.
[00:05:17] In a way, I've decluttered my mind.
[00:05:19] It is way quieter.
[00:05:22] Pairing affirmations with negative beliefs.
[00:05:26] Here are some examples of both affirmations and their possible opposing negative beliefs.
[00:05:32] Feel free to test these out yourself to find out in what ways they resonate with you.
[00:05:38] Tune into your body and your feelings as you hear these statements.
[00:05:43] Affirmation.
[00:05:44] Money flows to me easily.
[00:05:47] Negative belief.
[00:05:48] Making money is hard.
[00:05:51] Affirmation I express myself fully.
[00:05:55] Affirmation is belief.
[00:05:56] It's not safe to express myself.
[00:05:59] Affirmation I trust those I work with.
[00:06:03] Negative belief I can't trust other people.
[00:06:07] Affirmation I allow myself time to rest.
[00:06:11] Negative belief I'm not worthy of self-care.
[00:06:15] Now how did the affirmation statements feel to you?
[00:06:18] When you heard the affirmation, it might have felt somewhat hopeful and empowering but
[00:06:23] you may have also noticed dissonant energy deep down, signaling that a part of you didn't
[00:06:29] want to accept that affirmation.
[00:06:32] And how did the negative belief statements feel?
[00:06:35] When you heard the negative belief to yourself, if you felt a heaviness somewhere in your body,
[00:06:40] that's an indication that deep down a part of you is holding onto that negative story.
[00:06:46] The last word on affirmations.
[00:06:49] So what's the last word on affirmations?
[00:06:51] Well, it still can be useful to do affirmations on their own.
[00:06:55] But if you want lasting results, you'll need to do the deep work to clear out the opposing
[00:06:59] limiting beliefs.
[00:07:01] You'll need to clear out the dog.
[00:07:04] Then you can add all the air freshener you want.
[00:07:12] You just listen to the post titled, Do Affirmations Work?
[00:07:15] How to Effectively Employ Affirmations by Clearing Negative Beliefs by JoelBine.com
[00:07:22] and I'll be right back with my commentary.
[00:07:25] Think of it, Joel.
[00:07:26] He helps people in becoming whole, curious, creative and empowered to live a life that makes
[00:07:33] them come alive.
[00:07:35] And he's collaborated with some of the authors I narrate for you on this show like Derek
[00:07:39] Sivers, who I just narrated yesterday funny enough.
[00:07:43] T.K. Coleman with the minimalist Isaac Morehouse and more.
[00:07:47] He's also the founder of Human Liberation, which shares a revolutionary approach to remove
[00:07:52] negative beliefs from the subconscious mind, freeing people from their inner blocks,
[00:07:57] which is exactly what he was talking about in this article.
[00:08:00] And he has a guide for that titled Five Steps to End Negative Self Talk.
[00:08:05] You can find it at thehumanliberation.co slash old.
[00:08:10] Now I am a little biased since we do have an affirmations podcast called Good Sleep,
[00:08:15] but I do think what he said is true and it's interesting that he figured this out through
[00:08:20] doing some affirmations.
[00:08:23] If you're saying something and it's not sitting right with you or you heard it and it's
[00:08:27] having that heaviness he talked about, or it's just not having a positive impact, I definitely
[00:08:32] think it warrants some extra investigation.
[00:08:36] So good tips here.
[00:08:38] Do that investigation today, have a great rest of your day and I'll see you tomorrow
[00:08:42] where your optimal life awaits.
