Episode 3122:

Joel from 5AM Joel.com explores the transformative power of imaginary mentors in "Circle of Invisible Mentors," inspired by Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich." By consulting with icons like Richard Branson, Jocko Willink, Elon Musk, and even his future self, Joel demonstrates how envisioning advice from these figures can propel personal and professional growth. This practice, while unconventional, offers a unique strategy for overcoming challenges and achieving success.

[00:01:08] and Renearator Justin Malik, the guy that reads blogs or articles to you every single day

[00:01:12] of the year including weekends and holidays. And I'm going to jump right into another

[00:01:17] post as we optimize your life. Circle of Invisible Mentors by Joel of 5amjole.com.

[00:01:30] Have you ever met Richard Branson, the founder and CEO of Virgin? I've met him. Well,

[00:01:35] I feel like I have. Richard is one of my imaginary mentors and we meet up every few weeks in

[00:01:41] my mind. Now before you stop listening and conclude that

[00:01:44] I'm nuts, please give me a few more sentences to explain myself. Actually you can stop

[00:01:50] listening now if you want, full disclosure. I am definitely nuts. If that's okay with

[00:01:54] you, listen on. My cabinet of Invisible Counselors. I got this idea many years ago from the book

[00:02:01] Think and Grow Rich. The author is Napoleon Hill and he explains how mentors can be anyone

[00:02:07] in the world living or dead. You refer to this as a cabinet of Invisible Counselors. Here's

[00:02:13] a quick excerpt from the book.

[00:02:15] Quote, long before I'd ever written a line for publication or endeavour to deliver a speech

[00:02:20] in public, I followed the habit of reshaping my own character by trying to imitate the

[00:02:25] nine men whose lives and life works had been most impressive to me. These nine men were

[00:02:31] Emerson, Payne, Edison, Darwin, Lincoln, Burbank, Napoleon, Ford and Carnegie. Every night

[00:02:41] over a long period of years I held an imaginary council meeting with this group whom I called

[00:02:46] my Invisible Counselors. End quote. Sounds cool, right? Do you want to reshape and grow

[00:02:51] your character? Want to follow the footsteps of the people that impress you the most in

[00:02:56] life? I certainly do. What I look for in a mentor. Everyone has different reasons to seek

[00:03:02] mentorship. I can't speak for others out there, but here's what I need help with sometimes

[00:03:07] in life. Need support making big decisions. Someone to bounce wacky ideas off of. Give

[00:03:14] me inspiration when I need it. Give me a kick in the, that's what I need it. A real estate

[00:03:19] guru, a wealth guru, someone with an ideal marriage that I can learn from. I want mentors

[00:03:24] to hold me accountable and they must push me to be a better person constantly. It's

[00:03:30] tough to find one person who can check every single box on my list so I seek out multiple

[00:03:35] people to advise me. Some mentors I know in real life and some are people I've never met

[00:03:41] before. These strangers will never know it, but they have helped me solve major problems

[00:03:46] and become the person that I am today. My advisors include.

[00:03:51] Joko Willink is a retired Navy SEAL officer. To be honest he scares this thotomy. Just look

[00:03:57] at his photo, he's a beast. Failure is never an option for this guy and he accepts no excuses.

[00:04:03] I can sell with Joko every now and then when I'm hitting multiple walls and feel like

[00:04:07] giving up on something. He kicks my back into shape, Toronto. He motivates me to keep pushing

[00:04:13] no matter how hard it gets and helps me hold myself accountable for every situation.

[00:04:19] Elon Musk runs multiple publicly traded companies as well as trying to figure out how to send

[00:04:24] humans up to live on Mars. He doesn't have much spare time so when I meet with him I

[00:04:29] have to speak quickly, clearly and stay to the point. I meet with Elon at times when

[00:04:35] I've bitten off more than I can chew. He reminds me to compartmentalize my tasks then

[00:04:41] we go through each one in order of priority. I come out of those meetings with a focus

[00:04:45] to do list. My favorite imaginary mentor.

[00:04:50] The weirdest imaginary mentor that I have is my future self at 65 years old. The 65 year

[00:04:55] old Joel is a multi-millionaire, knowledgeable and fun guy. He knows exactly what I'm going

[00:05:01] through currently and everything I will encounter in the future. He is the same person as me

[00:05:07] except with 30 years more experience. 65 year old Joel helps me get through rough patches

[00:05:13] because he's already been through them himself and he survived them just fine. No matter

[00:05:18] what I'm going through, 65 year old Joel tells me everything is going to work out just

[00:05:23] fine. How invisible meetings work. Have you ever approached someone for help after explaining

[00:05:29] the problem out loud? You suddenly realize you already know the solution? The answer was

[00:05:33] right there in front of you. You just needed to talk it out or rephrase the issue. This

[00:05:38] is kind of how an invisible council meeting works. For me, there is no set agenda or

[00:05:44] schedule. I just close my eyes, envision I'm sitting across from my selected mentor and

[00:05:49] jump straight into problem solving. I know it sounds crazy, but it works. How to build

[00:05:55] your own cabinet? Start by creating a list of people you look up to in life. They can

[00:06:00] be real or not. Dead or alive, famous or unknown. Write these names down.

[00:06:07] Next think about why you like them. What advice, knowledge, strategies, personality traits,

[00:06:13] habits, attitude, etc. Do you admire? Be as specific as possible with this step. Finally,

[00:06:20] research and read about these people as much as possible. The more you know about them,

[00:06:25] the better and clearer your mental image will be. You don't have to become a stalker, just

[00:06:30] a mild obsession will do. That's it. Going forward whenever you come across a new problem

[00:06:36] in your life, set up a virtual meeting with one or some of your mentors. Think about

[00:06:41] how they would coach you to solve your issue. You just listen to the post titled Circle

[00:06:51] of Invisible Mentors by Joel of 5amjole.com and I'll be right back with my commentary.

[00:08:45] One of the most popular articles on our site was written by Greg Odino host of optimal

[00:08:49] relationships daily. He had hosted a Q&A show called Optimal Living Advice. Still

[00:08:55] exists if you want to check it out, but now he does the Q&A episodes on optimal relationships daily.

[00:09:00] Anyway, one of the questions that came in quite a while ago was about adults having imaginary

[00:09:06] friends. Now I try not to be quick to judge about things like this or things in general.

[00:09:12] I like to research or see different sides before jumping to conclusions about something being

[00:09:17] quote unquote weird. Well, that episode which we turned into a blog post on our site, oldpodcast.com

[00:09:24] ended up being one of the most trafficked articles because a lot of people are apparently

[00:09:29] searching for this on Google a lot more than we expected. So I think this article is on to

[00:09:34] something. It sounds like many people like to use a sort of imaginary person or friend or mentor

[00:09:41] in this case to talk about things with. And the more I think about it, the more it sounds like

[00:09:46] journaling to me. Except instead of writing to yourself, you're writing to someone else.

[00:09:51] And I guess yourself at the same time since it's an imaginary person and it's in your head.

[00:09:56] But anyway, I wouldn't dismiss it. I'm sure there's a lot of value there.

[00:10:00] So think about who your mentors might be. Thank you for joining me today and be sure to come

[00:10:05] back for another post tomorrow as we continue along the journey where your optimal life awaits.
