[00:00:58] This is Optimal Living Daily Episode 3207, The Three Levels of Commitment by Jeff Goins
[00:01:05] of GoinsWriter.com.
[00:01:07] And I'm Justin Mollick, and I'm going to jump right into today's post as we optimize your
[00:01:11] life.
[00:01:16] The Three Levels of Commitment by Jeff Goins of GoinsWriter.com.
[00:01:22] What the world needs more of is not new ideas and daring dreams, but commitment, a willingness
[00:01:30] to do the hard work that matters.
[00:01:32] Sadly, there aren't many who have the perseverance to do it.
[00:01:35] And I think the problem is a misunderstanding of the word.
[00:01:39] There is in fact more than one type of commitment, and knowing that can make a world of difference.
[00:01:47] Commitment means something different at different stages of life.
[00:01:51] As a child, you're committed to doing what your parents tell you because they're your
[00:01:56] parents and that's what you're supposed to do.
[00:01:59] As an adolescent, it's hard to commit to something that lasts longer than a few months
[00:02:04] so much can change so quickly and seems foolish to unnecessarily tether yourself to something
[00:02:10] so uncertain.
[00:02:12] As you enter adulthood, commitment takes on a different shape yet again.
[00:02:18] Through each season of life, we must relearn what it means to commit.
[00:02:23] An adventure.
[00:02:25] The first level of commitment is an adventure.
[00:02:28] In this season, you commit to something for the sheer thrill of it.
[00:02:33] This type marks those who travel the world and are able to walk away from a perfectly
[00:02:38] good job.
[00:02:40] Adventurers can move across the country or break up with a boyfriend without thinking
[00:02:44] twice.
[00:02:46] This type of commitment is important because it helps you experience a broad array of opportunities
[00:02:52] life has to offer.
[00:02:53] It'll lead you to see the world, explore different types of jobs, and do things you've never
[00:02:59] done before as long as those things feel good.
[00:03:02] However, this is healthy only for a season.
[00:03:06] When you build your entire life around this type of commitment, it can become problematic.
[00:03:12] You may find this way of living unfulfilling and immature as you grow up.
[00:03:16] I know I did.
[00:03:19] After spending a year of traveling from city to city while living in a van, I was fed up
[00:03:24] with wandering.
[00:03:26] Having seen so many homes and been a part of so many families, I was ready for something
[00:03:31] steady, if only for a season.
[00:03:35] A season.
[00:03:36] The second level of commitment is a season.
[00:03:40] You commit to something for an extended period of time, even after the initial thrill wanes.
[00:03:46] You plant seeds and stick around long enough to see them grow.
[00:03:51] You camp out at a job or under a revival tent because there's something special about the
[00:03:56] place.
[00:03:58] You go through life with a certain group of people and get to know them well.
[00:04:03] But this is all temporary.
[00:04:05] After the time of the commitment is complete, you move on to other endeavors.
[00:04:10] The season is over.
[00:04:11] The commitment is finished.
[00:04:14] This is an important level of commitment that many neglect.
[00:04:17] They jump from complete recklessness to starting a family, sometimes not on purpose.
[00:04:24] They go right from college to a full-time career, feeling like they never had the chance
[00:04:29] to see what life had to offer.
[00:04:32] If you pursue seasonal commitments, you bridge the gap between adolescence and adulthood
[00:04:38] without getting bitter.
[00:04:40] A season is what you make it.
[00:04:42] Some last five months, while others last five years.
[00:04:46] My year on the road was a season, as was my friend Dustin's two years teaching in Guatemala.
[00:04:52] The point of this type of commitment is it serves a purpose and has an end.
[00:04:59] A marriage, not literally.
[00:05:02] The third level of commitment is a marriage.
[00:05:04] This is the highest mark of maturity and what marks true dedication.
[00:05:09] Of course it applies to more than actual matrimony, but you get the idea.
[00:05:14] Marriage is forever, and so are some commitments.
[00:05:19] Hopefully your calling fits under this category.
[00:05:22] Although jobs come and go, your vocation, your life's work should be something that
[00:05:28] sticks, something you can commit to.
[00:05:31] But how do you know when you find it?
[00:05:34] You could do what my wife Ashley does.
[00:05:36] When she takes a job, she has a marriage mentality about it.
[00:05:40] She doesn't devise an exit strategy or consider her next steps.
[00:05:44] There are no stepping stones in her book.
[00:05:47] She has no backup plans.
[00:05:48] Ashley is not like many people her age looking over her shoulder for something better to
[00:05:53] come along.
[00:05:54] She just knows how always looking for the next best thing can sabotage your work and
[00:06:00] rob you of where you are now.
[00:06:03] Time to commit.
[00:06:05] Depending on where you are in life, it may be time to go on an adventure or make a seasonal
[00:06:11] commitment.
[00:06:12] It may even be time to take more of a marriage mentality towards certain things.
[00:06:16] But it's definitely not time to keep drifting through life without any thought as to who
[00:06:22] or what is counting on you, to keep shirking responsibility and causing those closest to
[00:06:28] you to call into question your integrity.
[00:06:31] No friend.
[00:06:32] It's time to commit.
[00:06:34] To a job, a relationship, a path, something, anything.
[00:06:40] We don't need your restlessness or your excitement.
[00:06:44] We have enough Peter Pans, thank you very much.
[00:06:46] What we need is a little more conviction in our difference makers.
[00:06:52] We need your focus, your pluck, your courage.
[00:06:56] We need you to commit.
[00:07:02] You just listened to the post titled, The Three Levels of Commitment by Jeff Goins of
[00:07:07] Goinswriter.com and I'll be right back with my commentary.
[00:07:10] Ryan Reynolds here from Mint Mobile.
[00:07:13] With the price of just about everything going up during inflation, we thought we'd bring
[00:07:17] our prices down.
[00:07:18] So to help us, we brought in a reverse auctioneer, which is apparently a thing.

[00:07:41] Thank you to Jeff.
[00:07:43] This was actually adapted from his book titled, Wrecked, when a broken world slams into your
[00:07:48] comfortable life, which you can find on Amazon or wherever you get your books.
[00:07:53] It has great reviews on Amazon, over 300 reviews with a four and a half star average.
[00:07:59] This one did make me think about what I'm married to when not talking about relationships.
[00:08:04] Am I married to personal development, health and wellness, helping others, entrepreneurship?
[00:08:11] Some of these are questionable to me and it really made me think about what areas I envision
[00:08:17] being married to and that make me happy thinking of what life would be if I were married to
[00:08:22] those.
[00:08:23] I think this is a great exercise.
[00:08:25] It doesn't take much time at all.
[00:08:28] Who do you think you're married to and which ones might you want to change?
[00:08:32] I'd be curious to know.
[00:08:33] You can always get in touch with me by replying to my free weekly newsletter that you can
[00:08:38] join at oldpodcast.com or there's also a contact page on that website.
[00:08:43] But in any case, do think about it.
[00:08:46] Just that small exercise could completely change your life for the better.
[00:08:50] And with that, thank you for being here and thinking about these things along with me.
[00:08:54] It means a lot.
[00:08:56] And I couldn't do this without you coming back to listen.
[00:08:59] Have a great rest of your day and I'll see you over the weekend where your optimal life
[00:09:03] awaits.
