[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_02]: How to be more present in life by Antonia Collins of BalanceThruSimplicity.com

[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Life can be busy. It pushes and pulls us in different directions and our body and mind have to react.

[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_02]: This means we can easily become unfocused, distracted and out of alignment with where we want our days in life to head.

[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Here are some tips on how to slow down and be more present in life.

[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_02]: I recently found myself sucked into the wormhole that is social media.

[00:01:50] [SPEAKER_02]: After feeling poorly and recuperating in bed I'd been mindlessly checking my phone until I felt better and more energetic.

[00:01:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I enjoyed watching videos of cute puppies and people doing funny things.

[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_02]: But there's also a lesson in what distraction can do.

[00:02:08] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm normally really good at creating more than consuming when it comes to social media

[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_02]: but I've racked up hours on my phone without realizing it.

[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Not really a habit that I wanted to continue once I was starting to feel better and ready to get back on track with my life instead of watching other people's.

[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I've been distracted and although perhaps I had a reasonable excuse,

[00:02:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I've been reminded again how important it is to stay connected to and present in life without distraction.

[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_02]: It could be distraction of social media and those cute puppy videos

[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_02]: or whether it's goals that no longer align with what we really want from life,

[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_02]: conflicting priorities or anything else that pulls us off course.

[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_02]: In a busy world that distracts us from every angle

[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's time to remind myself and maybe you too to be present.

[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Quote,

[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Life is available only in the present moment.

[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Tick-nod hon.

[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Five ways to be more present in life.

[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's regain focus, be mindful and aware in the moment, create clarity and be more present in life.

[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Here are some tips on how to be more present in life.

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Number one, eat slower.

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm a fast eater and in years gone by I've usually finished my meal before anyone else.

[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe it stems from when my children were young and I snatched a quick bite or two of my food in the little slots of free time I had.

[00:03:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe I'm just rushing to eat because I have a tendency to do everything in a rush.

[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Walking, housework, talking, typing, eating.

[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Eating slower helps me savor the taste of my food, enjoy the company of those I'm eating with,

[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_02]: be grateful for the food on my plate, improves my digestion

[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_02]: and encourages me to slow down and stop rushing through the day.

[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Eating slower helps me be more present in life.

[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Number two, bath instead of shower.

[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_02]: When I shower, I'm quickly in and out. I don't tend to hang around.

[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_02]: When I choose a bath instead, it takes longer to run the water.

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I choose carefully which bath products I'm going to use.

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe I take a book, a candle or drink with me.

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes I listen to music or a podcast.

[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Having a bath is more of an experience.

[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_02]: The water flows at its own rate and the whole process feels more luxurious, intentional and slower.

[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_02]: I take time to enjoy the warmth of the water, the scent of my bubble bath

[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and I can lose myself in my thoughts.

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Taking a bath instead of a shower helps me be more present in life.

[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Number three, stop multitasking.

[00:04:55] [SPEAKER_02]: We often think of multitasking as a superpower

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_02]: but actually it's often more of a hindrance than a help.

[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_02]: If you're fed up of juggling all the things and struggling to focus on what you're doing right now,

[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_02]: the chances are that your body and or brain are equally struggling to keep up.

[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Multitasking usually means we're skimming the surface of whatever we're doing at the time

[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_02]: without the time and space to commit to the task at hand.

[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Think about the number of times you've reread a paragraph of your book

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_02]: because your mind got distracted and you can't remember what you've read

[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_02]: or when the dinner boils over because you're trying to help your child do their homework.

[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Wherever possible, and I know it's difficult when busy life demands otherwise,

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_02]: try not to multitask.

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Do one thing then do another.

[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Don't be afraid to say no, postpone or cancel.

[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Listen to your body and mind when they tell you that they're too busy.

[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Doing one thing at a time helps me be more present in life.

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Number four, declutter your environment.

[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_02]: A clutter-free home and simplified space is a wonderful way to regain space, ease, calm, and clarity.

[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Get rid of the visual distraction, the mental clutter, and the physical stuff

[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_02]: to make your home easier to manage.

[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Everything in your home has a message to send you.

[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Look after me, use me, tidy me away.

[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Give yourself freedom from this silent to-do list as Fumio Sasaki calls it.

[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Without the distraction of clutter and stuff, your mind and body are free to focus on the life you're living here and now

[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_02]: and the things that add true value to that life, which often aren't tangible things anyway.

[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_02]: A decluttered home helps me be more present in life.

[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_02]: And number five, practice gratitude.

[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_02]: So many times we can get caught up in chasing, achieving, and doing.

[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_02]: More, bigger, better.

[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_02]: When we earn more, we'll be happier.

[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_02]: When we get a bigger car, we'll be able to travel more.

[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_02]: When we have that new pair of shoes, we'll look better.

[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_02]: We wait for the future instead of embracing the present.

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Gratitude helps us enjoy what we have right now and build on it in a positive way

[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_02]: instead of through negative comparison, dissatisfaction, and green-eyed envy.

[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Create a regular journaling practice to help you reconnect with yourself

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_02]: or just spend a few minutes each evening as you close your eyes to go to sleep.

[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Reflect on what you're grateful for in the day

[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_02]: and feel your thoughts become lifted and more positive.

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_02]: If you need ideas, try my free 30-day gratitude challenge.

[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Practicing gratitude helps me be more present in life.

[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you to Antonia.

[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_02]: At the very end of her article, she listed some other ways

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_02]: and in audio it can feel a bit overwhelming

[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_02]: so I thought I'd share some of those at the end here

[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_02]: instead of having a big list at the end of her post.

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_02]: So if the five that she suggested were some that you're already doing

[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_02]: or didn't really hit home for you,

[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_02]: here's some other real quick ones that you can think about.

[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Freeing yourself of sentimental clutter,

[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_02]: which by the way is a sort of expert level of decluttering.

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_02]: If you feel you've already got decluttering down,

[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_02]: then this is something you can try.

[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_02]: She also suggested meditating regularly,

[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_02]: which is something I've been doing myself lately.

[00:09:54] [SPEAKER_02]: You can spend time with people who lift you up,

[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_02]: make time for the little things,

[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_02]: realign your priorities,

[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_02]: check in with yourself,

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_02]: and that's also something that I've been doing daily.

[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Be silent and use social media mindfully,

[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_02]: meaning don't scroll as much.

[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Any and all of these are great steps to take

[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_02]: and can make a difference.

[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I'd start with whatever seems most exciting to you.

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I'll leave you there for today.

[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Hope you have a wonderful rest of your day

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'll be back tomorrow as usual

[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_02]: where your optimal life awaits.
