[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_00]: This is Optimal Living Daily. 5 Habits You Need to Master Your Fears and Leap Into a New Life.
[00:01:01] [SPEAKER_00]: By Danika Glenn of LearningToFly.org. And I'm Justin Mollick.
[00:01:06] [SPEAKER_00]: And we're going to jump right into another article as we optimize your life.
[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_00]: 5 Habits You Need to Master Your Fears and Leap Into a New Life. By Danika Glenn of LearningToFly.org.
[00:01:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's face it. Fear is a part of the human experience.
[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_00]: You can't outrun, bury it, or ignore it and hope it goes away.
[00:01:32] [SPEAKER_00]: This is especially true when you're entertaining new ways of showing up in the world.
[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_00]: If you can't escape from fear, how can you make sure it doesn't stop you from taking action and creating what you really want?
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm glad you asked.
[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Here are 5 habits that have helped me master fear and make positive changes in my life.
[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Number one, you don't have to complete your novel by 6 p.m.
[00:01:54] [SPEAKER_00]: The idea that massive change happens instantly instead of in small, doable steps leaves us without hope and unmotivated to take action.
[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_00]: If we tell ourselves we have to make these major overhauls in our lives, like master professional writing before we can write the first page in our book,
[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_00]: we will never get started.
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_00]: So if you've been afraid to start a business, write a book, or change your career,
[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_00]: spend 5 minutes today doing something that will get you closer to your goal instead of trying to master it by dinnertime.
[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Consistent, small steps is the way to master your fears because it trains you to take action instead of giving up before you even get started.
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_00]: It's not about big wins.
[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_00]: It's about taking small steps consistently to win big.
[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Number two, I can't love myself now.
[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_00]: I've got work to do.
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_00]: The way we talk to ourselves matters more than anything else, especially when we are feeling afraid.
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_00]: If we constantly tear ourselves down and tally up the ways we are lacking,
[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_00]: how exactly do we think we are going to have the courage or strength to face our fears?
[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_00]: When the voice of fear flares up and threatens to take you down,
[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_00]: offer words of encouragement and kindness to yourself.
[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Praise yourself for the steps you have already taken, no matter how small.
[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Number three, getting fear out of the driver's seat.
[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_00]: If your mind is stuck on repeating images of destruction when you want to move in a new direction,
[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_00]: try this.
[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Think about a major change you have made in the past.
[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Remember all of the fear and uncertainty you had?
[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Do you remember how you felt more confident and capable once the change was complete?
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_00]: You can face your fears and come out better on the other side.
[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_00]: You've already done this several times before.
[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Four, remind yourself you do have what it takes to not only survive, but thrive.
[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Train yourself to see fear as a challenge to get better, and you will start to master it.
[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Number four, the glory of making fear ordinary.
[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_00]: There is power in structure and routine.
[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_00]: I know the idea of repeating the same things over and over again sounds boring,
[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_00]: but repetition is a secret weapon you can use to start conquering your fears.
[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_00]: How?
[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_00]: By creating a habit of putting yourself in new situations.
[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Get uncomfortable repeatedly.
[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Willingly embrace the unknown by taking a new class or pitching a new idea to the world.
[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_00]: It'll change how you see yourself and what you believe is possible for your life.
[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Taking a leap into the unknown in small, fun ways can serve as the training you need
[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_00]: to take action to master your big fears.
[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_00]: Fear loses its grip on us if we're willing to embrace many new experiences just for the fun of it.
[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_00]: And number five, hurry, I need a roadmap out of hell.
[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_00]: I hate to break it to you, but there is no map you can follow to guarantee success
[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_00]: or avoid feeling afraid, uncomfortable, and lost.
[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_00]: However, there is something you can do to prepare for the inevitable.
[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_00]: The reason why fear keeps us paralyzed with indecision is because we don't question it
[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_00]: and problem solve ahead of time.
[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, how do you do that?
[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Put your worst case scenario in writing.
[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Write down what you want.
[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Write down all of your fears about the terrible things that could happen to you
[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_00]: if you go for what you really want.
[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_00]: What could you do to recover and rebuild your life if your worst case scenario came true?
[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_00]: When you take the time to write down your fears and think about the ways you can solve your worst
[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_00]: case scenario problems, you realize there always is a way out.
[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Your life is not in danger and it is possible to recover and rebuild even if your worst case
[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_00]: scenario comes true.
[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Making friends with fear.
[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Taking the time to question your fears and how you define them is the first step to mastering them.
[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_00]: You don't need to do the impossible by bedtime, but you do need to build habits that support you
[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_00]: and increase your confidence.
[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Training yourself to take small, consistent steps is the way to conquer your fears
[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_00]: and create the life you want.
[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_00]: You just listened to the post titled,
[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Five Habits You Need to Master Your Fears and Leap Into a New Life
[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_00]: by Danika Glenn of learningtofly.org and I'll be right back with my commentary.
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you to Danika.
[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_00]: It's funny how if we try to control our fears or avoid them, they just get worse.
[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Same thing for anxiety.
[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_00]: It's like sand.
[00:06:33] [SPEAKER_00]: The more tightly you try to grasp it, the more it spills out of your hands.
[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_00]: And while making friends with fear could sound like one of those woo-woo type things,
[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_00]: I think it's actually true.
[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_00]: It's something you have to truly accept for it to not rule your life.
[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_00]: And these are good tips.
[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_00]: The first one she mentioned was taking small, consistent steps.
[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_00]: And in psychology, you'll hear about exposure therapy, which is exactly that.
[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Tiny baby steps so that what was once a fear could sort of become normalized.
[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_00]: And while it may seem impossible at first,
[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_00]: even the greatest of fears can be tamed through baby steps like this.
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_00]: And in creative ways.
[00:07:13] [SPEAKER_00]: For example, spiders.
[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_00]: If you have a massive fear of spiders,
[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_00]: one baby step could be something like drawing a spider on a paper
[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_00]: and then having it sit on your desk.
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_00]: It might give a little anxiety at first,
[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_00]: but it's a drawing and eventually you'll get used to it being next to you.
[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Then a next step could be purchasing a plastic spider
[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_00]: and leaving that on your desk.
[00:07:37] [SPEAKER_00]: And maybe that's too big of a jump for you,
[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_00]: or maybe it's too small, but in either case,
[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_00]: that's just an example of how we can really take small steps
[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_00]: in the direction we want to go and eventually get to where we want to be.
[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_00]: So take those steps today.
[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Baby steps, of course.
[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Have a great rest of your day and I'll see you tomorrow
[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_00]: where your optimal life awaits.
