[00:00:27] This is Optimal Living Daily. Daily Date. How Waking At 5am Boosts My Performance by Jemma Martin with 5AMJoel.com. And I'm Justin Malik, your very own personal narrator. Welcome to Optimal Living Daily, OLD for short, where I read the best blogs to you, with permission from the authors, covering productivity, minimalism, personal development, that kind of stuff.

[00:00:52] And with that, let's get right to another post and start optimizing your life. Daily Date. How Waking At 5am Boosts My Performance by Jemma Martin with 5AMJoel.com.

[00:01:09] You've heard it before, waking up at 5am can change your life. But how? Can changing the time you begin your day really make that much of an impact in your personal and professional life?

[00:01:20] For me, the answer is simple. Yes. I've been waking up at 5am for years, but not consistently. I'm not gonna lie, I go through ebbs and flows like everyone.

[00:01:32] Times of peak motivation and lows of burnout and stress. But through it all, this has remained a constant truth. My ability to wake up at 5am is a key indicator of my daily performance.

[00:01:47] When I wake before the sun rises, I achieve more. I'm clearer, more focused, produce better work, and achieve far superior results than when I rise even one hour later at 6am.

[00:01:59] Let's get down to the nitty gritty and discuss why these 60 minutes make such an impact on my day.

[00:02:07] Number one, the disciplined muscle. Rising at 5am takes discipline. As a child growing up in an adult world, we exercise our discipline daily by following guidelines created by parents and teachers.

[00:02:22] That's why we run amok when we move out and make our own rules. We're finally in control.

[00:02:27] But over the years, this lack of structure can result in a lack of self-discipline. We drink too much, spend too much, and make mistakes.

[00:02:37] How do we grow out of this phase? With self-discipline.

[00:02:41] When I wake up at 5am before the sun naturally wakes me up, it's a sure way to do a rep on my disciplined muscle.

[00:02:48] I find this makes my decision making muscle much stronger, particularly later in the day when I need it most.

[00:02:55] It helps me skip the afternoon cookie or not watch an episode on Netflix when I don't really have the time.

[00:03:02] Number two, priorities. The stress indicator.

[00:03:06] Whatever action you first take in the morning is your number one priority.

[00:03:11] It's the nasty truth we pretend isn't real.

[00:03:14] But deep down, we know that our first cognitive attention is going somewhere we place an enormous amount of value.

[00:03:21] We then build habits from this action.

[00:03:25] When you wake up, are you checking emails on your phone or kissing your loved one's good morning?

[00:03:30] If I wake up and grab my phone before hugging my husband, it's a clear indicator that I'm under an unhealthy amount of stress.

[00:03:37] If this happens, I listen to my body and cut back on any unnecessary tasks that week.

[00:03:44] Number three, produce great work.

[00:03:48] Our brains are clearer in the morning.

[00:03:51] At 5am, we have less mental clutter clogging our creativity.

[00:03:55] This is a terrific time to achieve what we really want most.

[00:03:59] This will change over time.

[00:04:01] Man, that's a good thing.

[00:04:02] A couple years ago, getting into great physical shape was my primary focus.

[00:04:07] I was at the gym by 5.15am every day.

[00:04:10] It was the most important task on my to-do list.

[00:04:13] My mental and physical energy went into my workout routine.

[00:04:18] This changed when I began studying my MBA at university.

[00:04:22] I'd get up at 5am and open my textbook immediately.

[00:04:25] This was now my primary focus.

[00:04:28] And by the time I rolled into my office job at 9am, I had a few serious study hours under my belt.

[00:04:33] Now, I'm an entrepreneur and my most important goal is creating quality content for my community.

[00:04:40] I still study at university and I still hit the gym almost daily.

[00:04:44] But my peak mental energy is reserved for my most important task, my business.

[00:04:50] Your brain is fresh at 5am.

[00:04:54] Devote your peak thinking time to your most important task and reap the rewards.

[00:05:00] And number four, follow through on commitment.

[00:05:05] We've all made promises that we haven't lived up to.

[00:05:08] We make commitments to friends, family, and colleagues.

[00:05:11] But it's likely that the promises we fall short on are the commitments we make to ourselves.

[00:05:17] When I tell myself, I will wake up at 5am tomorrow, I actually do it.

[00:05:23] When I give somebody my word, I honor it as a vow.

[00:05:27] And I show the same courtesy with myself.

[00:05:29] This has an effect in other areas of my life.

[00:05:32] When I promise myself that I'll finish writing an article or send an email by a certain time,

[00:05:38] I don't sit around doing fake busy work.

[00:05:40] I execute my time towards the goals I have set for myself and follow through with my intentions.

[00:05:48] What has this surmounted to?

[00:05:50] Looking back over the last six years, waking up at 5am has ultimately led me to complete

[00:05:55] several tertiary qualifications, lose 39 pounds, and found a social enterprise.

[00:06:02] In addition, working full-time, getting promoted, and generally just loving life.

[00:06:08] I see 5am as a daily date with myself and the world.

[00:06:13] It's a place where I choose where I'm going and execute the tasks that get me there with

[00:06:19] intention and clarity.

[00:06:25] You just listened to the post titled,

[00:06:27] Daily Date, How Waking at 5am Boosts My Performance by Gemma Martin with 5amjoel.com.

[00:06:35] And I'll be right back with my commentary.

[00:06:37] Thank you to Gemma, a guest writer on 5amjoel.

[00:06:40] I'm nowhere near waking up at 5am, although I might be going out of the country for the

[00:06:46] first time in a couple of decades, and might try to start getting up earlier in preparation

[00:06:51] for the time change.

[00:06:52] But that's different.

[00:06:54] Typically, I go to bed on the later side and wake up on the later side, which I'm fine with.

[00:06:59] And I think the actual 5am number isn't what's important.

[00:07:03] It's more about maybe having an extra hour or so in the morning.

[00:07:08] And then also, what we actually do with that time.

[00:07:12] For me, I've slowly made my mornings more impactful by making sure I don't sit in bed for 30 minutes

[00:07:18] staring at my cell phone, and instead, go directly outside getting some sun for 10 or

[00:07:24] 20 minutes max.

[00:07:26] Maybe with some stretching or very basic Tai Chi.

[00:07:29] And then after that, I get 20 minutes of meditation in.

[00:07:33] With breakfast, I'm pretty much at an hour now.

[00:07:36] So even though it's not 5am exactly, I feel like I can relate to what she's talking about

[00:07:41] and that I am getting the best of my mornings, even though it looks much different than hers,

[00:07:46] both in terms of what I'm doing and the actual time.

[00:07:50] And that's what this podcast is all about to me.

[00:07:53] Figuring out what works best for us and then do what keeps you happy.

[00:07:57] Hopefully, these articles and this show is helping you.

[00:08:00] And with that, hope you're having a great morning, if it's 5am or otherwise,

[00:08:04] or afternoon or evening, whenever you're listening to this.

[00:08:07] And I'll see you tomorrow, where your optimal life awaits.
