[00:01:21] And with that, let's get right to it and start optimizing your life.
[00:01:29] How cyclical thinking can help you live better.
[00:01:32] By Ceylon George of SpiritualLivingForBusyPeople.com
[00:01:37] Seize the day.
[00:01:38] Make every moment count.
[00:01:40] These are wisdom sayings we hear all the time.
[00:01:43] They are sound too.
[00:01:44] However, in our hurried world, many of us are thinking only of the short-term rather than long-term gains and losses in life.
[00:01:52] We think linearly rather than cyclically.
[00:01:56] And it's had big consequences on our sense of well-being.
[00:01:59] How has thinking linearly not served us?
[00:02:02] The shortcomings of linear thinking.
[00:02:05] One of the biggest drawbacks of linear thinking is the assumption that more is always good.
[00:02:11] And the less is always bad.
[00:02:13] We may not say this, but the way we approach life societally gives us away.
[00:02:18] We know that life doesn't work this way.
[00:02:21] We even have sayings like, what goes up must come down to crystallize the truth of cycles.
[00:02:26] But we just can't help ourselves.
[00:02:29] Probably the most glaring example of how we defy reality is in the stock market.
[00:02:34] We all know about boom and bust cycles and we've all been through them.
[00:02:38] However, when the good times are rolling, we still act as if the good times will go on forever.
[00:02:43] And when the bad times finally arrive, we act as if the world is going to end.
[00:02:48] This reality can be extended to other areas in our lives.
[00:02:51] When relationships go south, we often bail just before an opportunity for growth presents itself.
[00:02:56] If you happen to be doing well financially, you may neglect to budget, save and plan for a time when that money may stop flowing in.
[00:03:05] Linear thinking is deceptive because it often promises a pot of gold at the end of a list of step-by-step instructions for getting there.
[00:03:13] But really, it's a painful trap when we realize that it does not mirror reality.
[00:03:18] How cyclical thinking can help you live better.
[00:03:21] You may be picturing a cyclical image as a circle with arrows pointing in one direction, going round and round in an endless and meaningless loop.
[00:03:31] Think instead of a spiral, which represents the cyclical image moving through space and time.
[00:03:37] Every situation, no matter how familiar, finds you in a different place than the last time you were there.
[00:03:43] For starters, you're older and have more life experience under your belt.
[00:03:47] For example, having a second child is a different experience from the first.
[00:03:52] Or how about when you first encountered a problem at work that you were able to apply to similar problems going forward.
[00:03:58] Cyclical thinking does not trap us in an endless loop.
[00:04:02] It represents the truth of how life and nature flows.
[00:04:06] And if you use it well, cyclical thinking can help improve your well-being.
[00:04:10] Here's how.
[00:04:11] Number one, it helps you get through the hard times.
[00:04:15] Cyclical thinking is especially helpful when you're going through a difficult season.
[00:04:20] While you're in the middle of it, the winters of our lives can feel harsh, even life-threatening.
[00:04:25] But if we allow ourselves to think back to a time where we struggled in a similar way,
[00:04:29] it can often be a source of encouragement.
[00:04:31] Many people get through difficult periods and emerge stronger than before.
[00:04:36] Going through a difficult season,
[00:04:37] remember that you've likely been there before.
[00:04:40] Draw on the resources and tools you gained last time around to help you through this time.
[00:04:46] Number two, you'll be better prepared for opportunities.
[00:04:50] There's a quote attributed to scientist Louis Pasteur which says,
[00:04:54] quote,
[00:04:55] Fortune favors the prepared mind, end quote.
[00:04:58] This is cyclical thinking at its best.
[00:05:01] How many opportunities have you missed because you weren't prepared for the harvest season?
[00:05:05] Think of all the overnight successes in film, music, art, sports, and academia
[00:05:11] who slaved away in obscurity for years before the lucky breaks came along.
[00:05:17] They understood the power of seasons.
[00:05:20] They understood that in order to benefit from the good times, they needed to be prepared for it.
[00:05:25] Number three, you'll learn to let go.
[00:05:29] When we learn to trust the seasons of life, we learn to let go of our expectations of how life's supposed to be.
[00:05:35] If you live in a climate with four seasons, you may complain about winter,
[00:05:39] but you don't sit around in the cold brooding about your lot in life while you freeze to death.
[00:05:43] You make adjustments.
[00:05:45] You wear warm clothing.
[00:05:47] You put on snow tires.
[00:05:49] You even play various winter sports and build snowmen.
[00:05:52] Life is the same way.
[00:05:54] When we find ourselves in less than ideal seasons of life, we can learn to adapt.
[00:05:59] And the way we do this is by letting go of our expectations.
[00:06:03] Letting go of your expectations and accepting life as it unfolds before you is probably the single greatest path to peace.
[00:06:11] Make every season count.
[00:06:14] Seize the season.
[00:06:15] Make every season count.
[00:06:17] I know it doesn't have the same ring to it, but if you want to start making progress in places in your life where you feel stuck,
[00:06:23] you may need to zoom out from the day to day.
[00:06:26] Whether you're in a season of life you enjoy or don't enjoy, live the season you find yourself in fully.
[00:06:33] And you'll find unexpected joy by just being present to the natural rhythm of life.

[00:08:11] A great reminder from him today,
[00:08:13] it's so easy to get caught in that way of thinking that whatever we're facing right now is going to last forever.
[00:08:20] We know it won't, but in the moment, it's so easy to forget that.
[00:08:24] In a couple of years, months, maybe even weeks, days, or minutes and seconds,
[00:08:31] things can and will change.
[00:08:33] Everything will change somehow.
[00:08:35] And while some are predictable, like seasons, some aren't at all and completely blindside us in both positive and negative ways.
[00:08:44] Although I don't like to classify them that way because everything that comes at us can be used as a learning experience
[00:08:49] and learning is always a positive.
[00:08:52] So try not to forget that today.
[00:08:54] Hope you have a great rest of your day.

[00:09:00] I'll be back tomorrow where your optimal life awaits.
