[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Dreading the holidays? Seven Practical Ways to Get Through the Season by Dr. Allison Nibus-Davis of DrAllisonAnswers.com.
[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_01]: The holidays are just around the corner.
[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_01]: For some people, the holidays are wonderful and full of holiday cheer.
[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_01]: But for others, the holidays can be incredibly difficult.
[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_01]: While the rest of the world seems to be festive and cheerful, you're dreading what the season will bring.
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you feel sad or alone, overwhelmed or afraid.
[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Or maybe you're feeling overcome with grief or loneliness.
[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you feel jealous as you see the season look merry for others.
[00:02:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Or maybe you're planning to throw the covers over your head and ignore the next month.
[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_01]: If this time of year feels hard for you, or if you're dreading the holidays, then you're in the right place.
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Because today, I'm sharing seven practical ways to help you get through this holiday season.
[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Number one, acknowledge it.
[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_01]: You know the phrase, awareness is the first step?
[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_01]: That's true with just about everything, including emotions.
[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_01]: If you have a hard time at the holidays, start by acknowledging your emotions.
[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_01]: When you dread the season, take a second to name how you're feeling.
[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Feeling better starts with first acknowledging how you feel.
[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Don't just say you feel bad during the holidays.
[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Bad isn't an emotion.
[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Do you feel lonely, overwhelmed, or forgotten?
[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Do you feel anxious, triggered, or isolated?
[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Be specific with your emotions.
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Pinpoint what you're really feeling.
[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Acknowledging how you feel this holiday season will help you better understand what you need.
[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_01]: It'll help you know how to cope.
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_01]: So if you're dreading the holidays, stop, take a mindful breath, and describe what emotions are present.
[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Number two, change your language.
[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_01]: If you're a regular here at Dr. Allison Answers, then you know how deeply I believe in self-talk.
[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_01]: How you talk about things has the profound ability to shape how you feel.
[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_01]: So the words you use when describing the holidays, they matter.
[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_01]: So if you say,
[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_01]: I hate the holidays.
[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_01]: The holidays are terrible.
[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Or,
[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I always feel depressed this time of year.
[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Then we're going to gently ask you to reframe your language.
[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_01]: This isn't about saying,
[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_01]: I love the holidays.
[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Or,
[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_01]: this is my favorite time of year.
[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_01]: You know I'm not about that toxic positivity that doesn't help anybody.
[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Instead,
[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I want you to say something like,
[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_01]: the holidays tend to be difficult for me.
[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Or,
[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I struggle more at the holidays.
[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Consider saying,
[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_01]: this season is more challenging for me.
[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Or,
[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I feel lonelier this time of year.
[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_01]: This rewording acknowledges what is,
[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_01]: but it also leaves room for something different.
[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_01]: It allows the possibility for your experience to shift or change,
[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_01]: even if just a little bit.
[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Number three,
[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_01]: give up what doesn't serve you.
[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_01]: If there's something you absolutely hate about the holidays,
[00:04:55] [SPEAKER_01]: something that makes you feel awful,
[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_01]: allow yourself to opt out.
[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Let it go,
[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_01]: give it up,
[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_01]: or say no thanks.
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Of course,
[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_01]: you can't do this with the entire season,
[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_01]: but if there's something in particular that really sucks,
[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_01]: find a way to pass,
[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_01]: not go,
[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_01]: or make changes.
[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_01]: If your family's five-hour meal that turns into an argument stresses you out,
[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_01]: then leave early.
[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_01]: If faking it at the holiday party of the friend you don't really like
[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_01]: isn't good for your mental health,
[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_01]: then don't go.
[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_01]: And if overspending on gifts stresses you out,
[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_01]: then don't do it this year.
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I realize this might be easier said than done,
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_01]: and it might require you to ruffle some feathers.
[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_01]: But if it's not serving you,
[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_01]: then make a change.
[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Do it differently this year.
[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Of course,
[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_01]: it's important to note that this isn't an excuse to avoid everything this season.
[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_01]: It's about looking at the things that truly cause distress
[00:05:50] [SPEAKER_01]: and finding a way to do them differently.
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_01]: So don't just power through.
[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Don't keep doing what you've been doing,
[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_01]: especially if it's not working.
[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_01]: If something makes you feel awful,
[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_01]: skip it this year
[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_01]: and see how it feels.
[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Number four,
[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_01]: resist the urge to isolate.
[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_01]: When we feel comfy,
[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_01]: we tend to isolate.
[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_01]: And the more we isolate,
[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_01]: the worse we feel.
[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_01]: The worse we feel,
[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_01]: the more we isolate.
[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_01]: And,
[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_01]: well,
[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_01]: you can see where this goes.
[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_01]: So even though your brain will want to hole up
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_01]: and avoid the world this holiday season,
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_01]: challenge yourself to lean in.
[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Be with people you care about.
[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Engage when you want to avoid.
[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_01]: In fact,
[00:06:33] [SPEAKER_01]: if you dread the season,
[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_01]: let people know that you're dreading the holidays.
[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Let them know you need some extra support.
[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_01]: You don't have to be a social butterfly
[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_01]: and you don't have to be the life of the party.
[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_01]: But resist the urge to isolate.
[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Because the research is clear,
[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_01]: isolating is a quick ticket to feeling worse.
[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Number five,
[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_01]: do something kind for someone else.
[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of research on the benefits of
[00:06:59] [SPEAKER_01]: pro-social behavior.
[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Pro-social behavior is about doing something kind
[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_01]: or helpful for someone else.
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_01]: If you've ever done this,
[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_01]: then you know how powerful and fulfilling it can be.
[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Years ago,
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_01]: I bought coffee for an elderly man and veteran
[00:07:13] [SPEAKER_01]: in front of me at Starbucks.
[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_01]: And I was blown away
[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_01]: at how much the small act filled me up.
[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_01]: So if you're dreading the holidays,
[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_01]: find a way to do something for someone else.
[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Volunteer,
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_01]: buy a meal,
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_01]: or shovel your neighbor's driveway.
[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Run an errand,
[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_01]: donate to a toy drive,
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_01]: or have a meaningful conversation
[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_01]: with someone who seems lonely.
[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't have to be big or expensive.
[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_01]: It just needs to be intentional and kind.
[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Number six,
[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_01]: schedule something you enjoy smack dab
[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_01]: in the middle of the holidays.
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Notice the phrase,
[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_01]: schedule something versus do something.
[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_01]: There's some pretty cool research
[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_01]: that suggests that scheduling a vacation
[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_01]: leads to just as much happiness
[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_01]: as actually going on the vacation.
[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of surprising, right?
[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Looking forward to something
[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_01]: helps guide your thoughts
[00:08:04] [SPEAKER_01]: in a more positive direction.
[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_01]: It provides a sense of purpose
[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_01]: and hopefulness.
[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_01]: And it can give you a target
[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_01]: to focus on
[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_01]: when the holidays feel hard.
[00:08:13] [SPEAKER_01]: So schedule something
[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_01]: that you enjoy smack dab
[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_01]: in the middle of the season.
[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Doesn't need to be expensive,
[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_01]: fancy,
[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_01]: or complicated.
[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Just make it something you enjoy.
[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Put it on the calendar,
[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_01]: make a commitment,
[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_01]: and give yourself something
[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_01]: to look forward to.
[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_01]: This is powerful
[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_01]: any time of year,
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_01]: but especially
[00:08:33] [SPEAKER_01]: when you dread the holidays.
[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_01]: And number seven,
[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_01]: know that everyone else
[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_01]: isn't merry.
[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_01]: I know social media
[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_01]: makes it look like
[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_01]: everyone is joyful.
[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_01]: I know Hallmark movies
[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_01]: make it look like
[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_01]: everyone is gathered with family.
[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_01]: And I know it feels like
[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_01]: you're the only one struggling.
[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_01]: But I promise
[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_01]: this isn't true.
[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Everyone isn't joyful.
[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Everyone isn't with family.
[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_01]: And you aren't the only one struggling.
[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I can promise you this
[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_01]: because as a psychologist,
[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_01]: I listen to people
[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_01]: share their experiences
[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_01]: every single day.
[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I hear clients
[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_01]: talking about their struggles,
[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_01]: their depression,
[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_01]: and their grief.
[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_01]: And I hear clients
[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_01]: sharing about how lonely
[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_01]: they feel at the holidays
[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_01]: and how much
[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_01]: they dread the season.
[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_01]: But if you saw these people
[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_01]: out in the world,
[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_01]: you'd never know
[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_01]: they were struggling.
[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_01]: You'd never know
[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_01]: the holidays were hard for them.
[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_01]: So if it feels like
[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_01]: everyone else is happy,
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_01]: festive,
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_01]: and full of holiday cheer,
[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_01]: please know that
[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_01]: this isn't true.
[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Everyone else
[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_01]: isn't merry.
[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_01]: And you are not alone.
[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_01]: If you're dreading the holidays,
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_01]: if this season feels hard,
[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_01]: acknowledge it.
[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Name what you're feeling
[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_01]: and be thoughtful about
[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_01]: what feels so hard
[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_01]: this time of year.
[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Then take a breath
[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_01]: and remember,
[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_01]: you have the ability
[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_01]: to impact your experience.
[00:09:52] [SPEAKER_01]: You're not powerless
[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_01]: over your experience.
[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_01]: And you're not stuck
[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_01]: feeling this way.
[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_01]: You have the ability
[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_01]: to do things different
[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_01]: this holiday season.
[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_01]: You just listened
[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_01]: to the post titled,
[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Dreading the Holidays?
[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Seven Practical Ways
[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_01]: to Get Through the Season
[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_01]: by Dr. Allison Nebus Davis
[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_01]: of DrAllisonAnswers.com.
[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'll be right back
[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_01]: with my commentary.
[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you to Dr. Allison.
[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I like that she mentioned
[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_01]: that feeling bad
[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_01]: isn't really a true feeling.
[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_01]: It could be lonely
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_01]: or overwhelmed
[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_01]: or anxious,
[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_01]: sad,
[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_01]: and so on.
[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_01]: One thing I think can help,
[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_01]: and it might sound
[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_01]: a little cheesy,
[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_01]: but I do think it works,
[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_01]: is to look up
[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_01]: a list of feelings.
[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_01]: You can just Google it.
[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'll probably put a link
[00:10:41] [SPEAKER_01]: in this week's
[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Optimal Living Weekly Newsletter.
[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_01]: If you're not on that email list,
[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_01]: you can join for free
[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_01]: at oldpodcast.com.
[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_01]: But anyway,
[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_01]: having a list of words
[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_01]: describing feelings
[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and categorized
[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_01]: by like happiness,
[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_01]: sadness,
[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_01]: fear,
[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_01]: and so on
[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_01]: with different words
[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_01]: in each category
[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_01]: can help us understand
[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_01]: ourselves better
[00:11:02] [SPEAKER_01]: in the moment.
[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_01]: To identify,
[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_01]: oh,
[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_01]: that's what I'm feeling.
[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not actually scared.
[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just hesitant
[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_01]: or startled.
[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_01]: That's just an example,
[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_01]: but having this list of words
[00:11:14] [SPEAKER_01]: can help us get to the root of it.
[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_01]: A little expansion
[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_01]: on what she was talking about,
[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_01]: but it's something I learned
[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_01]: in a personal development retreat
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_01]: a while back,
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_01]: and I thought it was helpful.
