[00:00:00] This is Optimal Living Daily, 5 Ripple Benefits of Good Sleep by Joel Bein of joelbein.com

[00:00:08] And I'm Justin Malik, your personal narrator, and we're going to get right to it as we optimize your life.

[00:00:18] 5 Ripple Benefits of Good Sleep by Joel Bein of joelbein.com

[00:00:24] Everyone knows good sleep is essential.

[00:00:27] Everyone knows it helps alertness, boost mood, improves memory, and so on and so on and so on.

[00:00:34] But those benefits can seem general or vague.

[00:00:37] How do they translate into everyday life?

[00:00:40] When you take a bird's eye view of the symbolic nature of life, you see that good sleep is an anchor habit that springboards to limitless positive benefits.

[00:00:49] If you clarify these benefits in your mind, you can better motivate yourself to engage in the small habits that lead to good sleep.

[00:00:57] Like, turn off Netflix, pass on a glass of wine, get sunshine when eating lunch, and so on.

[00:01:04] No more feeling that gnaw of, I should probably do this.

[00:01:09] Instead, you can do these habits because you're pumped up about the benefits of high quality sleep.

[00:01:15] So let's dive into 5 Ripple Benefits.

[00:01:18] The clearer you see these in your mind's eye, the more internal drive you'll have to sleep soundly.

[00:01:24] Number 1.

[00:01:25] You'll leverage your income potential.

[00:01:28] If you're more alert and refreshed, what can you do with your day?

[00:01:32] Make more sales calls.

[00:01:34] Perform better on sales calls.

[00:01:36] Have 20 extra minutes of energy each day to hunt for a better job.

[00:01:40] Build confidence to negotiate a raise.

[00:01:42] Let's flesh out that last one, build confidence to negotiate a raise.

[00:01:46] This is a good example of the ripple effect of good sleep.

[00:01:50] Because good sleep and build confidence to negotiate a raise are not directly related.

[00:01:56] But certainly, they are indirectly related.

[00:01:59] How?

[00:02:00] Better sleep.

[00:02:02] Improved mood.

[00:02:03] Higher energy.

[00:02:05] Clear mental awareness to plan high-level tasks.

[00:02:08] Higher performance at work proving you are valuable.

[00:02:11] Better motivation to read a book on how to negotiate better.

[00:02:14] And stronger confidence to tackle a new challenge, such as to ask for a raise.

[00:02:19] Number 2.

[00:02:20] You'll improve your physical attractiveness.

[00:02:23] We know sleep is generally good for your health.

[00:02:26] But there's a reason it's called beauty sleep.

[00:02:29] You'll actually look better.

[00:02:31] Your skin will glow and you'll be alive with energy.

[00:02:34] Looking better is not merely superficial.

[00:02:36] In one study, people were more likely to socialize with those who slept better.

[00:02:41] And better sleep will keep the extra pounds off.

[00:02:44] Maybe looks aren't central to a meaningful life.

[00:02:47] But it's safe to say that increasing vibrancy and fitness are boxes we all like to check.

[00:02:53] Number 3.

[00:02:54] You'll elevate the compassion you have for your kids.

[00:02:58] When you're well-rested, you can think clearly and become more resourceful.

[00:03:02] You'll have the stamina to choose your response in a given situation rather than react unconsciously

[00:03:08] or emotionally.

[00:03:10] This is very applicable to parenting.

[00:03:12] We all love our children and want to interact with them in the healthiest and most loving

[00:03:17] way, even if they do something we would not prefer, something that pushes your buttons.

[00:03:22] But what if you had a superpower that prevented access to such buttons?

[00:03:26] Enter high-quality sleep.

[00:03:29] With increased cognition, you'll have a force field around those buttons.

[00:03:33] You'll supercharge your communication, prevent conflicts, and coordinate more win-win.

[00:03:39] Number 4.

[00:03:41] You'll increase creative fulfillment.

[00:03:43] Good sleep brings good energy.

[00:03:46] If you wake up refreshed, you may notice you're now excited to start a better morning routine.

[00:03:51] Rather than mindlessly watch the news while you chug your caffeine, you feel motivated

[00:03:56] to create something, to intentionally sculpt your morning with a constructive project.

[00:04:02] Maybe you begin that novel.

[00:04:03] Maybe you start that blog.

[00:04:05] Perhaps you practice that guitar.

[00:04:07] When you put even 20 minutes into such activity, you gain a sense of fulfillment that carries

[00:04:12] with you throughout your day, week, and life.

[00:04:16] And the more you create, the more you want to create.

[00:04:20] And number 5.

[00:04:22] You'll begin a positive spiral for all other good habits.

[00:04:26] You know that you want to sleep better for the basic reason that you'll feel better.

[00:04:30] But also, sleep can exponentially help you feel better.

[00:04:34] Because when you enhance sleep quality, you sharpen your brain.

[00:04:38] How can that spiral to other life-enriching habits?

[00:04:41] Maybe you'll begin to meditate 5 minutes a day, which improves focus and then improves sleep too.

[00:04:46] Or you'll choose nourishing foods rather than sugary ones, which look super attractive when you have barely slept.

[00:04:53] Then you'll think to call a friend for a meaningful conversation, relaxing your nervous system, and elevating your happiness quotient.

[00:05:01] Maybe you'll hit the gym.

[00:05:02] Perhaps you'll invest money more wisely.

[00:05:05] You might start journaling.

[00:05:07] With an energized day after a deep sleep, the ripple benefits are unlimited.

[00:05:12] It all starts with choosing to invest in yourself, your health, and your sleep.

[00:05:23] You just listened to the post titled,

[00:05:25] Five Ripple Benefits of Good Sleep, by Joel Bein of joelbein.com.

[00:05:29] I'll be right back with my commentary.

[00:05:32] Fees are everywhere these days.

[00:05:34] From airline baggage charges to ticket processing fees, they all add up.

[00:05:38] And don't get me started on banking fees.

[00:05:40] But that's why I love Chime.

[00:05:42] They actually spot you up to $200 with no overdraft fees when you're running low.

[00:05:46] Plus, you can get your paycheck up to two days early with direct deposit.

[00:05:50] No monthly fees, no maintenance fees, and access to over 50,000 fee-free ATMs.

[00:05:56] What's really cool is their boost feature, where friends can help increase each other's spot me limits.

[00:06:01] It's like having your friends back financially.

[00:06:03] To date, Chime has spotted members over $30 billion.

[00:06:07] Make progress toward a better financial future with Chime.

[00:06:15] That's chime.com slash OLD.

[00:06:18] Chime feels like progress.

[00:06:33] Timing depends on submission of payment file.

[00:06:35] Fees apply at out-of-network ATMs.

[00:06:38] Thank you to Joel.

[00:06:39] When I was younger, especially in college and even when first starting this podcast,

[00:06:43] I was definitely a night owl.

[00:06:45] I've talked about this recently.

[00:06:46] I'd be going to bed just as the sun was coming up.

[00:06:49] But over time, and especially after reading so many articles about the benefits of good sleep

[00:06:54] and getting some sun in the morning, I really tried to change that pattern.

[00:06:57] That ripple effect the author talks about is so true.

[00:07:00] I've noticed in my own life that when I get better sleep, everything else seems to fall into place easier.

[00:07:07] When I'm editing episodes for this podcast, for instance, I'm so much more focused and efficient after a good night's rest compared to when I'm running on fumes.

[00:07:17] Recently, I've started implementing some of these sleep-friendly habits, like getting sunshine first thing in the morning, which I've mentioned before, and trying to stay off screens before bed.

[00:07:26] It's not perfect.

[00:07:27] Definitely slip up sometimes.

[00:07:28] But I can feel the difference when I stick to it.

[00:07:32] If you're interested in learning more about sleep and health, my brother actually covers these topics regularly on Optimal Health Daily.

[00:07:39] And we even have a sleep affirmations podcast that could help you wind down at night.

[00:07:45] You can find that by searching for Good Sleep, which is the name of this article, interestingly.

[00:07:50] And just make sure you're picking the one from Optimal Living Daily.

[00:07:54] So again, just look for Good Sleep by Optimal Living Daily.

[00:07:58] And with that, wishing you good sleep and rest.

[00:08:01] Thank you for being here every day and for subscribing to or following the show.

[00:08:05] And I'll be back tomorrow reading to you where your optimal life awaits.
