It starts with a swipe. Tinder.
[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_00] This is Optimal Living Daily. Overwhelmed? Eliminate Work by Reorganizing It. Part 1 by Tyler Tavorin of Riscology.co. And I'm Justin Malek. Welcome to one of the only podcasts in the world where articles are narrated to you for free with permission from the authors. An award-winning podcast, thanks to you. Today I have a bit of a longer post. I'll read the first half today and then finish the rest for you tomorrow. So with that, let's get right to it as we optimize your life.
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_00] Overwhelmed? Eliminate Work by Reorganizing It. Part 1 by Tyler Tavorin of Riscology.co. Trying to remember what it felt like the last time you had a to-do list so long, it made you want to give up and declare to-do bankruptcy. I'm not surprised if you feel that way right now. A study by Harris Interactive found over 80% of people in America are stressed out at work.
[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_00] I've felt the same many times. I'd sit down at my desk and before even starting, I'd say to myself, there's no way I'm going to get everything done. Defeated from the beginning. This problem might be worse for introverts who work in a company where personalities don't always match the task. You get sucked into meetings, the chatter is loud, and the environment can be exhausting. But there's good news. If you haven't taken a hard look at the way you do your work,
[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_00] there are probably some incredible opportunities to eliminate a large portion of your daily workload. And just how is that possible? It's all in the order of the work you do and how you prioritize. Here are a few examples from my own experiments in making my workday just a little more sane. Problem number one, you're doing the wrong work. We all know different types of work suit different types of people. But if you're the type who likes to say yes to new things and accept challenges,
[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_00] it's surprisingly easy for work that's not a good fit for you and never will be to pile up like a mountain of mud. I once found myself in exactly that place when I took over the customer service department and a business partnership. What I didn't realize then, but quickly learned, was that I am comically bad at customer support. As an introvert, my strengths lie in building systems and working on projects that can help lots of people all at once.
[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_00] I'm a poor fit for actually interfacing with those people on a daily basis. The problem goes beyond just doing the wrong work, though. It takes a surprisingly small amount of it to foul up the work you should be doing. You think, hey, I have eight hours in a day to get things done. I could spare one or two on this soul-crushing stuff. It's a good opportunity. But you're wrong. If you're an introvert working on something better fit for an extrovert,
[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_00] then just an hour of wrong work can easily eat up four or more hours of productivity because it's so draining. When you finish, if you finish, it's hard to get motivated to do anything else. Solution number one, timebox and delegate your wrong work. So what's the solution to a problem like this? You can't just stop doing your work, right? People are relying on you to get things done. But when you're doing the wrong work, you have to find a way out of it.
[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_00] Success and your sanity depend on it. After finding myself doing too much wrong work, I did two things that helped. Number one, I talked to my partners and we agreed to hire someone else to take over customer support. And number two, I committed to spending no more than an hour each day answering support tickets. Those solutions worked. Delegating support was a permanent fix. And until then, I knew I could triarch support
[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_00] and keep us running without losing each day to wrong work. If you don't work for yourself like I do, this might sound like an impossible solution. What if your boss regularly dumps work in your lap and doesn't care if it's a good fit? Sometimes this can be fixed with a long-term commitment to improving communication. Your best shot at fixing the problem will be to show your boss two things. Number one, how much more effective you'll be when you're working on your right work.
[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_00] If you spend a week ignoring the work that drains you and just doing what you're good at, you'll have proof of what you can accomplish when you're not saddled by draining tasks. And number two, regularly reinforce what your right work is. In order to make sure the assignments handed to you are the right ones, take an active role in reminding the people around you what you're good at. If you work for a company that sees the connection between their success and how productive you are,
[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_00] you won't be stuck in an impossible situation. Problem number two, hear that on tomorrow's episode. You just listened to part one of the post titled, Overwhelmed? Eliminate Work by Reorganizing It by Tyler Tavorin of Riscology.co. And I'll be right back with my commentary. [00:08:03] [SPEAKER_00] That's 20% off your first order with code OLD at LiquidIV.com. Thank you to Tyler. That feeling of a to-do list so long you just want to throw in the towel. I think we've all been there. Nice timing because I just had a dream that I was back at my old job from over a decade ago and was coming back from vacation with so much to catch up on. And then a couple of co-workers asked if I could fill in for them. And I accepted for some reason. Yikes.
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_00] What he said about doing the wrong work really rang true for me, especially as a major introvert like him. It's so true how certain tasks can just suck the life out of you and then make it impossible to do the stuff you're actually good at. I remember when my business partner and I were first getting the whole podcast network off the ground. In those early days, we were wearing so many hats. There were definitely tasks that just felt like not my strong suit. Usually phone and video call type stuff. So draining for me.
[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_00] And then my motivation for the right work, the stuff that I actually enjoy and am good at, just disappeared. And his solution of time boxing and delegating makes a lot of sense. Over time, we've definitely figured out how to shift tasks around with our team so people are playing more to their strengths. It's about protecting that energy for the work that really moves the needle and doesn't leave you feeling completely wiped out. It's a good reminder to take a look at what's on our plate
[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_00] and see if there's anything that's consistently draining us and if there's a way to reorganize it. But this is just the first half of the episode. We'll hear about problem number two tomorrow. So for now, that'll do it for today. Have a great rest of your day. And I'll see you tomorrow for part two, where your optimal life awaits.
