[00:00:29] This is Optimal Living Daily Episode 2942 Simple Living Tips for the Stressed Out or Recovering Perfectionist Part 2

[00:00:38] by Krista OReilly-Davi-Digui of Alifenprogress.ca and I'm Justin Malik.

[00:00:44] Welcome to OLD Optimal Living Daily where I read articles to you with permission from the authors or websites,

[00:00:51] but today being a continuation from yesterday so I'd recommend listening to yesterday's episode first, that's episode 2941.

[00:00:58] But if you're all caught up let's get right to part 2 and continue optimizing your life.

[00:01:06] Simple Living Tips for the Stressed Out or Recovering Perfectionist Part 2 by Krista OReilly-Davi-Digui of Alifenprogress.ca

[00:01:17] Number 4, work with your personality and natural energy ebb and flow.

[00:01:22] Honor your inherent wiring as much as possible and live as though you love yourself.

[00:01:28] There's no sense trying to mimic someone else's way of life if it totally goes against your grain.

[00:01:33] No matter how many simple living gurus get up at 4.30am for meditation, you don't have to.

[00:01:40] You don't have to follow fads or live like the cool kids or try to walk out anyone else's dream.

[00:01:46] The world needs you.

[00:01:48] Design your ideal day and sustainable weekly rhythm and get nitty-gritty here and consider crafting an environment and a life in which you can thrive.

[00:01:58] When do you do your best work? Do you need to see people often or do you crave solitude?

[00:02:04] Do you want to live amidst hustle and bustle or build a tiny home and live in the woods? Who are you and what do you really want?

[00:02:12] When you can answer this with a measure of clarity, we don't need perfect clarity to take action.

[00:02:18] You can become more intentional about building a simple and sustainable lifestyle.

[00:02:23] What makes you happy?

[00:02:25] Figure this out and infuse your life with more of it.

[00:02:28] Stop doing things out of guilt or because you're worried about what people will think of you.

[00:02:33] Life is way too sure for that.

[00:02:35] Your life will feel so much simpler when you get honest about who you are and what you need.

[00:02:41] Of course there'll be compromise especially if you share life with other interesting and messy people.

[00:02:47] But like Ylva Berra says, if you don't know where you're going, you'll end up someplace else.

[00:02:53] Number 5. Reduce Decision Fatigue

[00:02:57] Plenty of choice is not always a happy thing especially for someone who's stressed out or has a perfectionist nature.

[00:03:04] If you like a brand, stick with it.

[00:03:07] Set a time limit for researching before making a purchase.

[00:03:10] Learn to make a gut decision more often and ditch the self-doubt.

[00:03:14] Call your inner circles or you're spending time with the people you love most and who model the values or characteristics you desire.

[00:03:22] Rotate through the meals your family loves rather than recreating the wheel each night.

[00:03:27] Stick to styles you know you feel good in instead of following all the fads.

[00:03:32] Build routines into your day that help you live aligned with your goals.

[00:03:37] Minimize, outsource, or automate choices and tasks to simplify your life.

[00:03:42] Enlist help and remind yourself that allowing others to help you does not mean you're incompetent, it means you're wise.

[00:03:50] Set up auto payments or auto-ship of items you regularly buy.

[00:03:55] Take an honest look at your calendar and as a family decide what you can let go of or at least don't feel bad about not attending every single one of your kids' rehearsals or games.

[00:04:05] Your self-care and sanity matter too.

[00:04:09] Clear, purposeful boundaries can lead to so much more freedom.

[00:04:13] Make a decision once so you can stop thinking about it.

[00:04:17] Examples of this could include creating a values-based spending plan that takes into account your personality and simplifies spending habits,

[00:04:25] crafting a minimalist wardrobe for you and your kids and deciding that if one item comes in then another goes out,

[00:04:32] or compiling a list of self-imposed rules that guide your health and wellness choices.

[00:04:38] Set clear limits on books and toys, saying yes to volunteering, kids' activities, how many nights you'll go out each week, etc.

[00:04:47] to de-stress and simplify your life.

[00:04:50] And number six, loosen your grip and make space for joyful possibility.

[00:04:56] I'm taking a wild guess that you struggle with relaxing and letting go.

[00:05:00] Your tendency can be all work and no play.

[00:05:03] Avoid becoming too rigid or rule-oriented as you pare down and carve a simpler path.

[00:05:10] For my final simple living tip, I encourage you to let go and have some good old-fashioned fun.

[00:05:16] For my last birthday, I bought myself a ring to wear as a reminder to enjoy myself.

[00:05:21] In every birthday, I choose a new mantra to help me remember who and how I choose to be in the world.

[00:05:27] A full, beautiful life is composed of a million ordinary days.

[00:05:33] Don't wish them away.

[00:05:34] Remember to breathe and pause long enough to notice the beauty of each simple day.

[00:05:40] Look past the mess or the frustration, pull your mind back from what went wrong yesterday or where you'll be tomorrow,

[00:05:48] and just soak in today.

[00:05:50] Your kids grow up so fast and you don't have the promise of tomorrow.

[00:05:55] This is real life.

[00:05:56] Hold the outcome loosely.

[00:05:58] No matter how hard you try, life will not go according to plan.

[00:06:02] But plan anyway and open up to the idea that sometimes life goes off-script

[00:06:07] but ends up far more beautiful than we could have planned for.

[00:06:10] Your joy might skyrocket if you accept that while you cannot control for every eventuality,

[00:06:16] you are resilient and strong and have what it takes to rise above when harder times come along.

[00:06:22] The truth is, sometimes simple living will feel busy and stressful.

[00:06:27] Living simply when you're stressed out or as a recovering perfectionist is hard work,

[00:06:32] challenging and courageous work, freeing work.

[00:06:35] And honestly, simple living as a recovering perfectionist feels like a humorous contradiction in terms to me.

[00:06:43] Perfectionists are masters at complicating their own lives no matter what it looks like to outside observers.

[00:06:49] I'm not sure we ever completely overcome this aspect of our wiring,

[00:06:53] but we can practice daily as we journey to freedom.

[00:06:57] In my case, my mission-driven and love-to-learn,

[00:07:01] which means I can easily tip into performing, comparing,

[00:07:05] or simply stress over my desire to learn all the things.

[00:07:09] Choosing a simple lifestyle requires conscious effort and purposeful action each and every day.

[00:07:16] I choose rest.

[00:07:17] I offer myself permission to live in the tension of desiring growth but honoring my limitations.

[00:07:24] I lean into the ebb and flow of a full, imperfect and beautiful life.

[00:07:30] I hope you use these simple living tips as encouragement,

[00:07:34] but take what serves you and ditch the rest.

[00:07:37] You just listen to part two of the post titled,

[00:07:44] Simple Living Tips for the Stressed Out or Recovering Perfectionist

[00:07:48] by Krista O'Reilly Davideghi of AlifeInProgress.ca

[00:07:52] Thank you again, Krista.

[00:07:54] A tiny little mention in there that I liked today was that

[00:07:58] she bought a ring to wear as a reminder to enjoy herself.

[00:08:02] That daily reminder has been really important for me personally.

[00:08:06] There are lots of ways to do it.

[00:08:08] It doesn't have to be a purchase like a ring,

[00:08:11] but it can be like with Krista's example.

[00:08:14] Maybe this podcast does serve as a daily reminder.

[00:08:18] Hopefully it does for you too.

[00:08:20] But you can even set a reminder on your phone to check in really quickly,

[00:08:24] see how you're feeling and where your head is at.

[00:08:27] Maybe check in and take a deep breath

[00:08:30] or just notice what's going on around you.

[00:08:32] I know some smartwatches have settings where you can set a small alert

[00:08:36] for things like this too.

[00:08:38] There are plenty of ways to get the reminder.

[00:08:40] Just try to do one that works for you with

[00:08:43] as little work and resistance as possible.

[00:08:46] I think it will help in the long term.

[00:08:48] Or again, this podcast can hopefully do that too.

[00:08:51] So thank you for being here and using this podcast as a daily reminder.

[00:08:55] Have a great rest of your day and I'll see you tomorrow as usual

[00:08:58] where your optimal life awaits.
