Episode 199:
At the end of this episode, you mention that fruits with a thick skin, peel or shell are less of a concern for pesticides. I hear this a lot, and (assuming that we are talking about non-GMO foods) always argue that the nutrition of the fruit comes from the health of the plant or tree. So whatever is getting sprayed onto the leaves or roots would be absorbed into the plant …feeding the fruit. After hearing you make this statement, I have to ask if I am missing out some information / science behind this advice.
Thanks for listening and stopping by, Rick! I got your answer directly from Dr. Neal. Here’s what he said:
“While there is no sure-fire way to remove all pesticide residues from produce (that hasn’t been grown organically), those foods with thick skins have been shown to have lower concentrations of these residues. I cannot say for sure however if and at what level of exposure the roots and leaves of these plants would need to affect the flesh of the fruit. I haven’t seen any data on this. But, if you have, definitely send it my way!”
